New Administration Welcomes Rocco

National Runner-up Visits Second Governor In Four Years

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Keith Rocco wins Connecticut’s NASCAR state championship with such consistency that he was congratulated by a new administration recently. Rocco was greeted by Gov. Dan Malloy in the State Capitol Building in Hartford.

Rocco, 27, of Wallingford, won his fourth consecutive Connecticut state championship in 2011. Malloy, 56, of Stamford, took office as his state’s 88th governor in January 2011.

“It was great to return to visit the Capitol Building again and meet our new governor,” Rocco said. “He was interested in what we do in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. Our visit went well.

“It’s nice that the governor’s office and NASCAR work together to recognize us as state champions.”

Forward’s Garage and S.K. Bean’s Enfield Garage are Legion Speedway Sponsors

WENTWORTH, NH – Two of the Upper Connecticut River Valley’s premier auto and truck service centers have indicated their support of local dirt track racing by signing on as sponsors at Legion Speedway. Forward’s Garage and Auto Body of Lebanon and S.K. Bean’s Enfield Garage may compete for business, but both agree that Legion Speedway is a great place to find new customers.

Forward’s Garage and Auto Body is the 2012 title sponsor of Legion Speedway’s headline class, the Modified Sportsman. “The Forward Family has been involved in racing for generations and we appreciate the confidence they’ve demonstrated by signing on as a title sponsor,” said Wally Brown who, along with his wife Janine, is promoting and operating Legion Speedway for the 2012 season and beyond. “Tim Forward is well known in racing circles and we look forward to working with him on some interesting promotions as a title sponsor this year.”

S.K. Bean’s Enfield Garage will jump start the season by sponsoring the Legion Speedway Grand Opening on Sunday May 27. “Stuart Bean is our neighbor here in Enfield,” Brown said, “having someone who knows us well demonstrate enough confidence to sponsor opening day means a lot.”

B Mains May Be Toughest SCoNE Races in 2012

CHESTER, VT – With a likely increase in the number of competitors and possible average car counts in to 20 to 24 ranges, the B Main or Last Chance Qualifier may just provide some of the best racing for the Sprint Cars of New England during the 2012 season.

“We really hate to send anybody home without qualifying for the A Main,” says SCoNE honcho Mike Kondrat, “but we have to strike a balance. Having more than 18 full sized, winged 360 Sprint Cars on the tracks we race on doesn’t make for a good show for the fans and almost always tears up a lot of equipment. Don’t get me wrong, there is no place we’d rather race than on the quarter miles at Canaan, Bear Ridge and Legion, but we have to use our heads too.”

Unless track operators specify otherwise, SCoNE features will be limited to 18 cars in 2012, as they were in 2011. When there are 22 or fewer cars, two heats will be run and seven cars from each heat will qualify for the A Main. The remainder will go to the B Main from which four cars will qualify. When there are 23 or more cars, three heats will be run with five cars qualifying. An additional three cars will qualify from the B Main.

In order to maintain SCoNE’s hard-won reputation as the tour that starts the fastest cars and best drivers at the back of the A Main, the current handicapping system will continue in 2012, with minor changes.

Kevin Chaffee Lands Full Time USAC DMA Midget Ride at Bear Ridge Speedway

BRADFORD, VT — “The Fairlee Flier,” Kevin Chaffee of Fairlee, Vermont Motorsports Magazine 2011 Driver of the Year, has landed a season-long ride in the 2011 USAC Dirt Midget Association championship winning team at Bear Ridge Speedway.

“We’re happy to welcome Kevin to the Seals-It team on a full time basis in 2012,” said team owner and New England Auto Racing Hall of Fame member Skip Matczak of Ellington, CT. “Kevin did a great job last year, finishing second his first time out and then going on to win two features. He has a great work ethic, really knows how to get around Bear Ridge Speedway and has a loyal following among the fans.”

Chafee joins Seals-It teammates Denny Zimmerman, a former Indianapolis 500 Rookie of the Year, and Joe Krawiec, who won the inaugural USAC DMA championship at Bear Ridge Speedway last season.

“I really appreciate the opportunity that Skip has given me,” Chafee said. “It’s a great car and the support and advice I’ve gotten from Denny and Joe is something that money can’t buy.”

Stoehr-NEMA Story Adds New Dimension

Brockton, MA — For some four decades, the Northeastern Midget Association’s Stoehr family has competed on the father-son and brother-verses-brother level. It will expand in 2012 to first-cousin-verses first-cousin.

Expect to see plenty of Stoehr folks when NEMA opens its 60th season March 31-April 1 at Waterford Speedbowl’s Budweiser Blast Off. “That’s what we do, we drive race cars,” understates Russ, who returns in the Dumo’s Desire #45. Brother Greg is back as well in the 26b, a new Stealth chassis powered by the familiar Mazda.

On the first cousin level, Russ’ son Avery, who turns 16 in June, moves up from an impressive go kart record to join Greg’s daughter Bethany in NEMA Lites action. The rapidly growing Lites division begins its fifth season at the Blast Off.

Avery, a WKA champion at Route 106 Racepark in Pembroke, NH, will drive the car Keith Botelho drove (and won with) in NEMA competition the past two seasons. Carl Kibbe remains the crew chief for the now Focus-powered Stealth chassis.
