Michael Gervais, Jr. Primed for Breakout Season in Stafford’s SK Modified® Division

Stafford Springs, CT — As Michael Gervais, Jr. heads into his third season of SK Modified® competition at Stafford Speedway, he is coming off a season in which he improved his points finish from 21st to 10th place. That improvement in the points earned Gervais 2011 Most Improved Driver honors and he is looking to build upon that improvement and reach victory lane for the first time at Stafford.

“I don’t want to jinx myself, but we’re putting things together and we don’t’ see any reason why we can’t win a race this year,” said Gervais. “We’ve gone through the whole car to make sure all of our ends meet, the car is going to look pretty new and hopefully we’ll have a pretty good car for the Sizzler.”

While Gervais has yet to win a race at Stafford, he has tasted success. Gervais won the SK Light track championship as a rookie in 2009 and he made the move into the SK Modified® division for the 2010 season. After posting 3 top-10 finishes in his rookie season, Gervais followed that up by posting two top-5 and 8 top-10 finishes this past season.

Joey Cipriano Teaming with Steve Greer to Make SK Modified® Debut at Spring Sizzler

Stafford Springs, CT — After finishing third and second in points in his first two seasons of SK Light competition at Stafford, Joey Cipriano, III will team up with Steve Greer to drive Greer’s #19 Gunsmoke Stables Ford Mustang in the CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler on April 29. Greer has had several drivers, including Ted Christopher, James Civali, Doug Coby, and Ryan Preece, behind the wheel of his #19 in limited races in the past, and now Cipriano will be the latest driver to take the reins of the #19. Cipriano and Greer were teammates in the SK Light Modified division last season and now they will be reunited as Cipriano looks to make his SK Modified® debut.

“I’m looking forward to the opportunity, Steve’s car has always been fast when it shows up at Stafford,” said Cipriano. “He’s had some really good drivers in the car before me, so I’m hoping I can have a good race. Right now, we only have the one race planned in the SK car, but if some sponsorship were to come our way, then we would like to run more races.”

“We had talked back and forth with Joey last year about possibly doing something, but he was focused on his SK Light efforts and we could never put something together,” said Greer. “I’m not planning on running my SK car full-time this year, but we did want to run some races, and the Sizzler is one of those races. I met up with Joey at a fundraiser he was hosting for his Modified Racing Series team and told him I had an empty seat for the Sizzler and asked if he would like to fill the seat. It’s nice to be working with Joey again, he’s certainly proved he has the skills to drive the car well and win. I won’t put anyone in the car who I think can’t win, and my crew and Joey’s crew work well together, so it was an easy decision to put Joey in the car for the Sizzler.”

Lincoln Technical Institute Renews Title Sponsorship of Modified Racing Series Event at Stafford Speedway

Stafford Springs, CT — Stafford Speedway has announced that Lincoln Technical Institute of East Windsor has renewed their title sponsorship of the Lincoln Tech 80 Modified Racing Series event. The Lincoln Tech 80 is scheduled for Friday, June 22 and will continue a relationship between Stafford and Lincoln Tech that originated with Lincoln Tech sponsoring the Late Model 100 in 2010.

“We’re excited to be coming back as a title sponsor at Stafford,” said Robert Wargo, High School Admissions Representative for Lincoln Tech. “We’ve been very pleased with the return we’ve seen on admissions as a direct result of our involvement with the Speedway. We’ve had several students come directly from Stafford, DARE Stock driver Kris Fluckiger is a Lincoln Tech graduate, Stafford Official Rich Keator is currently a student with us, and Ltd. Late Model driver Cory Casagrande has just enrolled with us and he will start classes in September. Overall, it’s been a very positive response since we began our sponsorship at Stafford.”

In addition to supporting the race with their title sponsorship, Lincoln Tech has also brought a unique look to the winner’s trophy. Two years ago, Lincoln Tech’s students airbrush painted the hood of a car to present to the winner of the Late Model 100. While there was no special trophy for last year’s MRS event, plans are in the works for Lincoln Tech students to once again come up with a unique winner’s trophy for the MRS race.

Two Open Practice Sessions Near at Thompson

Thompson, CT — The 2012 racing season will kick off with two open practice sessions at Thompson International Speedway. These pre-season practices will be held on Saturday, March 31st and again on Saturday, April 7th. Virtually any safe race car is welcome to participate in these sessions that will run from 11 Am until 5 PM each day. Paddock area gates will open at 10 AM.

These open practice sessions offer competitors a great opportunity to get their race cars ready for the season-opening Icebreaker scheduled for the weekend of April 14th and 15th. This year’s exciting Icebreaker will feature the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour along with Thompson’s own Sunoco Modifieds, Super Late Models, Thompson Modifieds, Late Models, Limited Sportsman and Mini Stocks.

Race teams find these open practice sessions to be very valuable for them to have the time necessary to fine tune their race cars and to give newer drivers the valuable “seat time” that is so important going into a full season of racing. The format for these sessions is a “round robin” style by division and runs virtually non-stop for six hours.

Stafford Motor Speedway CARQUEST Champions for Charities Driver Spotlight: Richie Pallai, Jr.

Stafford Springs, CT — Stafford Motor Speedway has again lined up an impressive field of current and former open wheel champions for its CARQUEST Champions For Charities Event as part of CARQUEST Super Saturday on June 30th. During the coming weeks, SMS will offer a profile on each of its championship winning drivers and the charity they will be racing for and this week’s CARQUEST Champions For Charities spotlight falls on Richie Pallai, Jr., the 2009 Spring Sizzler SK Modified® Champion, who will be racing to help support The Danbury Animal Welfare Society.

The Danbury Animal Welfare Society is a non-profit, volunteer-run organization dedicated to improving the lives of animals in the community and beyond. They promote responsible pet guardianship and the humane treatment of animals, and work toward ending animal overpopulation through education and a variety of programs. Danbury Animal Welfare Society gives shelter and care for homeless companion animals while they wait for people like you to give them a loving, forever home. DAWS recently held their 5th Annual Making a Difference Ball, where Pallai got himself off to a good start by raising a total of $1,800. Pallai’s fundraising total currently has him out front in the race for pole position for the 15-lap CARQUEST Champions for Charities feature event.

“We have a great relationship with DAWS and attending their annual Ball was a pretty cool deal,” said Pallai. “We were able to raise $1,800, so that is a great start for us. Last year we raised $3,000, so we’re already more than halfway there to matching that total.”
