First: Walt Gale, driving the Secondo #32 Offenhauser, bested Dave Humphrey and Bill Stofer on June 12, 1966.

Notes: Drew Fornoro was the first NEMA winner on the present layout in 1985. Lee was a unique tri oval between 1965 and 1983…Nokie Fornoro (Reider #81) defeated Rich Volger and Mike Seymour in a co-sanctioned USAC race on June 27, 1986…A daring move in heavy traffic gave Ben Seitz his win in 2004. Randy Cabral, Seitz and Joe Payne ran into lapped traffic with five laps remaining. Seitz shot to the inside to grab the lead and then held Payne off over the final five laps.

First Race: Dave Humphey (McCarthy 47) defeated Lou Fray and Butch Walsh on July 9, 1972

Notes – The top six in the first race included a pair of Chevy II motors, two SESCOs, an Offenhauser and a Comet. It was the first of five Monadnock wins for Dave Humphrey…Drew Fornoro has 11 Monadnock wins, all with owner Gene Angelillo, the final one in 1997 when he beat Russ Stoehr…Stoehr, in a Reider chassis, defeated Fornoro in his first Monadnock win in 1995…2008 winner Bobby Santos III didn’t get the lead until only two laps remained with Payne snatching second from Nokie Fornoro on the last lap.

Note – Russ Stoehr’s 2001 win featured a last lap pass of Bobby Seymour that used three turns and wasn’t over until the two exited turn four. Seymour was second to Stoehr twice at Oswego as were Drew Fornoro and Supermodified star Joe Gosek…On the subject of Supermodifed standouts, Joey Payne’s 2004 win featured a late pass of Phil DiMario in heavy traffic while Chris Perley drove the Berrio #2 to victory over Lou Cicconi on Classic Weekend in 2005.

Notes – Johnny Kay and Len Thall finished in a dead heat for second behind Al Pillion in 1957…Racing Immortal Mel Kenyon was a Seekonk NEMA winner on Sept 1, 1985 beating the Fornoro brothers Nokie and Drew…Drew (Angelillo 45) defeated Nokie (Reider 81) in 1986 in a race co-sanctioned with USAC. It came a day after Nokie beat Rich Vogler at Lee…There are 12 seasons between Keith Botelho’s Seekonk victories…Randy Cabral’s first win came at the 2000 Boston Louie Memorial in a car older than he was… The Seymour family has won five of the last 10 NEMA races a Seekonk with drivers Jeff Abold, Lou Cicconi, Anthony Nocella. The family has six Lites wins, five by Nocella.

Notes – Randy Cabral’s only Stafford win came in 2010 in the Bertrand car but it was the sixth win for the number 47. Owner John McCarthy won five times at Stafford including the first-ever race on the paved half-mile in 1967 with Lou Fray aboard. Fray won four times and Dave Humphrey once for McCarthy at Stafford….Jerry Wall set Midget racing on its ear with a victory in the “Jellowjacket” #5 in 1971, the first time a midget with an engine behind the driver, took a checkered flag… Erica Santos remains the only NEMA female winner, doing in Ed Breault’s #44 in 2007…2012 winner Mike Horn joined his dad Jeff on the Stafford victory list, the latter a winner in his own car in 2005.

Note – There have been 140 NEMA features run at Star Speedway, making it the club’s most frequent stop. There have been 33 different winners…The first Midget winner at Star, Dave Humphrey went on to win for five different owners there including Mike Connors, Mike Scrivani, John McCarthy and Ralph Miller in addition to Don Pascale…Howie Bumpus set some kind of record coming from 27th to win in Don Berrio’s #2 in 2002. Aided by seven cautions in the first nine laps, Bumpus was second by lap 16 and took the lead from Drew Fornoro on a restart with five to go. Randy Cabral came from 22nd to get third…Jeff Horn and Joey Payne have been successful in both Midgets and Supermodifieds at Star

First: Bill Eldridge, driving the Parameter #55 Ford, defeated Sid Cook and Elmer Gunnerson on May 31, 1953 – the second race in NEMA history following the first (at Seekonk) by less than 24 hours.

Notes – Considered by many one of the East Coast’s best Midget facilities, 18 drivers have scored their first (and often only) NEMA win at Waterford. The list includes Howie Bumpus who won as rookie back in 1988, the versatile Ted Christopher, who edged Bobby Seymour driving a Angelillo car in 1998, the then 16-year Bobby Santos III who captured the 2002 Boston Louie driving for the Seymour family, four-time driving champion Ben Seitz and the brothers Tim and Todd Bertrand. Tim, a winning driver in 2002, has nine Waterford victories as an owner. John Zych joined the list last year.
