Hickory Champ McDaniel Evaluating 2014

Repeat Champ Wants To Improve On The Road

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Austin McDaniel maintained his level of success at a challenging and historic NASCAR Whelen All-American Series track in 2013. He won his second consecutive NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model track championship at Hickory (N.C.) Motor Speedway.

McDaniel, 24, of Harrisburg, N.C., is evaluating his plans for 2014. He’s wants to maintain success at Hickory, but wants to gain more experience and step-up his results at other tracks.

“We could run just the Zloop Big 10 Challenge Series races at Hickory and try to get experience and improve at some other southeastern tracks,” McDaniel said.

Brian Tagg to Enter ACT, Thompson Events

Brian Tagg of Oxford, MA will be racing about 80 percent of the American-Canadian Tour schedule with his #9 Late Model. Tagg’s first goal is to qualify for the 150-lap season opener at Lee USA Speedway. He wants to gain experience at each track to prepare for a full-time effort in 2015. “We would like to do every race this year, but Airborne might be tough to make it to,” Tagg said. “Loudon is in my sights. It’s a dream come true to be able to even try and qualify for the September race.”

Tagg called the cost of SK Modified racing outrageous. (Late Model racing) “seemed to make the most sense,” Tagg said. … “I really wanted to try new tracks and longer races and a lot of different racers.”

Tagg will also drive the #39 for a few events at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park, where he has raced Mini Stocks and the former Thompson Modified division. The crew consists of “my dad, gramps, Cousin Shawn and Uncle Jack,” Tagg said. “When Troy and Mike Talman aren’t racing the SK, they will be helping too.”

Everything just worked out. It was a really good deal we’re doing with Shigeaki Hattori and he’s a really great guy. I’m really happy to be on his team. It’s a really big privilege for me.”

Hutchins and Pulliam’s crew chief Randy Goss bring years of experience to HRE. “He’s a younger guy but he’s been racing for a long time,” Garbo said. “… He’s definitely the right guy. …  I’m really comfortable with (Randy) Goss. … Between the two of them, like I said, sharing notes and working together in being one team, even though it’s with two teams. I think that we should be pretty dominant and I really have high expectations for the team this year. … The chemistry between my crew chief and I is already great and Lee Pulliam and I get along really well and it should be a great season.”

Star-Studded Field Shaping Up for Sunoco Modified Divsion

THOMPSON, CT — An impressive list of drivers have filed registrations to compete in Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park’s (TSMP) Sunoco Modified division in 2014.

Last year’s champion, “Kid Roc”, Keith Rocco will be back to defend his title. Not only did the champ pick up his fourth Modified championship at Thompson, but also finished third overall in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National Championship point standings. Rocco now has a seven year streak of finishing at least 4th or better in the national standings, dating back to 2007. Despite those credentials, Rocco knows this year will be tough. “There is some fierce competition again this year,” states Rocco. “We are just looking to go out, win races, and show some growth. Another national championship would be perfect, though.”

Defending NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champ Ryan Preece will be returning to compete at TSMP in 2014 as well. The Berlin, CT driver was named one of the top 13 drivers to watch in the NASCAR Next program in June, along with drivers Chase Elliott and Dylan Kwasniewski. Preece will be driving the #31 Falmouth Ready Mix entry for Al and Cathy Moniz. The team is looking to return to the form they were in in 2012, when they were the division’s titlists. In addition to his competition in the local and regional Modified ranks, Preece also slated to compete part-time in the Nationwide Series for Tommy Baldwin Racing.

North East Mini Stock Tour Returns to Stafford as Part of 43rd Annual Spring Sizzler Weekend

Stafford Springs, CT — As the 2014 season at Stafford Motor Speedway draws closer and closer to taking the green flag, the track’s premier event, the 43rd Annual Spring Sizzler, continues to grow. After making a successful debut last season, the Texas Roadhouse North East Mini Stock Tour presented by Twisted Tea will return to Stafford as part of Spring Sizzler Weekend. “The Spring Sizzler will be our first race of our Connecticut Triple Crown,” said NEMST Founder/Promoter Bob Guptill. “We have $1,000 that will be split among the top-5 finishers and the winner will receive $350. Stafford will be our first race and then we’ll race at Waterford on May 31st and at Thompson for the World Series. We’re looking forward to another great race at Stafford.”

Defending SK Light Champion Tony Membrino, Jr. Moving To Stafford Speedway’s SK Modified® Division For 2014

Stafford Springs, CT — With the 2014 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season on the horizon at Stafford Motor Speedway, the track’s premier SK Modified® division has added a new driver to its rookie class. Defending SK Light Modified track champion Tony Membrino, Jr. will be making the move up the modified ladder for the 2014 season with a new car and a new car number. Membrino and his TMR team struck a deal with Steve Greer and he will swap his familiar #44 for #79 as he prepares to make his SK Modified® debut at the Spring Sizzler on April 25-27.

“It was more or less the opportunity that fell into our lap in the last month or so that made the decision for us,” said Membrino. “Our plan was to work on getting a new chassis and run 2014 in the SK Lights and make the move up to the SK Modifieds® in 2015. What ended up happening was we made an arrangement between Steve Greer, my father, and myself to acquire the chassis from Steve that Woody Pitkat drove on the MRS tour. We’re housing the car at our shop, we’ll be running with a T/A Engine, and we’ll be working with Ed Flemke to make the transition and work together on a couple of things with the chassis. We’ve worked with Steve in the past and we’ve been friends for a while. Without the help of Steve, Ed, and John Hoffman, this deal wouldn’t have been possible. It’s pretty cool to be running the #79. Dave Salzarulo is one of the original #44 guys and he’s been running that number for the longest time so instead of trying to get that number I wanted to do something different. We discussed some different options for a new number and Ed mentioned he liked the 79 from when he raced for the Hillbilly team. Ed has been so supportive and instrumental in our success so to do something that has a link to him is pretty cool. I’m going to miss the 44, I feel like that’s where I really came into my own. But drivers go through number changes all the time so this is just part of the deal.”

In addition to making the move up the ladder into Stafford’s SK Modified® division, Membrino and his team have signed up a brand new sponsor for the 2014 season.

Kyle Casagrande Joining Stafford Speedway’s 2014 Late Model Rookie Class

Stafford Springs, CT — After setting a Stafford Speedway record for the most career DARE Stock victories with 20, hometown driver Kyle Casagrande will join the track’s Late Model rookie class for the 2014 season. Casagrande has 7 years of DARE Stock experience at Stafford and he will try to make it back-to-back Rookie of the Year winners in the Casagrande family as his younger brother Cory took home the 2013 Late Model ROY honors. Casagrande made three starts in his family owned #71 Late Model last season and he is ready to take on a full season in Stafford’s premier full fendered division with his familiar #7 on the car.

“It’s going to be a pretty big step for me,” said Casasgrande. “I’ve been racing DARE Stocks for 4 or 5 years now and I had 3 starts in the Late Model last year. Cory made it look pretty easy but I don’t think I’ll have as easy a time but we’ll see what happens, I’m definitely excited. I hope to compete for Rookie of the Year. I know Josh [Wood] is moving up this year and he’s going to make it tough competition for me. I think that’s not too ridiculous of a goal for me and I just want to stay consistent, get better every week, learn, maybe get some top-10 or top-5 finishes if the cards fall my way, and have a nice clean season. If you’re a racecar driver, you have to think that you have a chance to win. I don’t have any expectations of winning, but I always like to think there’s an outside chance to win if something should fall my way.”

While Kyle is joining his brother Cory in the Late Model ranks, they took different paths to get there. Cory started out racing in the DARE Stock division in 2010 and then moved to the Limited Late Model division for the 2011 and 2012 seasons before stepping into the Late Model division last year. Kyle will be making the jump into the Late Model division straight from the DARE Stocks. Although Kyle was the winningest driver in DARE Stock history, he knows he faces some growing pains but that he can also lean on Cory, his father Rick, and his uncle Dean for help.

Change is in the Air…

With the 2013 American Canadian Tour Banquet of champions behind them, Wayne Helliwell Jr. and the Bruce Bernhardt Motorsport’s Team are full steam ahead with 2014 plans.

Plans that will look very different than years past for the Pelham NH based Team. First and foremost there will be no three-peat for the 27NH machine atop the ACT standings. Helliwell says they are going outlaw with their schedule for the year and they have no plans to compete full time on the Vermont based tour.

“We’re looking to expand on things”, says Helliwell. “We have no plans to stick with any one series this year. We have a new Pro Stock that is just about complete… We’ll be running all of the [late model and pro stock] traveling series at some point this year.”

As a rookie in NASCAR’s top development series, Pulliam will have veterans working on his team in team manager Bruce Cook and crew chief Randy Goss. The team will also be fielding a second car for David Garbo, Jr. of Stonington, CT. Brett Moffitt drove the car for the past two seasons. He won twice and finished third in points in 2012. Despite a winless season, Moffitt finished second in points last year.

Pulliam won his second consecutive NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championship season. He joined the late Larry Phillips and Philip Morris as the only drivers to win the championship more than once. He also captured track titles at Motor Mile and South Boston.

“I got a phone call from Bruce Cook … he said he had an opportunity and wanted to know if I’d be interested in driving a K&N car for Shigeaki Hattori Racing this year,” Pulliam said. “Of course, I was thrilled about it and I knew they had really good equipment and a nice operation down in Mooresville. And we got an appointment together and come down and talked with one another and his expectations and my expectations were on the same page and I met all of the guys at the shop, all of them are really good guys with a lot of experience. It just looked like the perfect situation to get a chance at it. It’s something I’m really extremely thankful for and extremely excited about.”

“We’re very happy to once again bring the PASS National Championship Series to some of North America’s most legendary short tracks in 2014,” said PASS President Tom Mayberry. “Since 2008, we’ve been able to bring some of America’s greatest short track racers together to compete for the PASS National Championship. We feel the tracks that have been selected this year will provide a true test of man and machine throughout the season and will provide some truly exciting events for our race fans.”

Fans will not have to wait long for the PASS National Championship Series to get underway as it will begin in just over two weeks at Florida’s New Smyrna Speedway. The 3rd Running of the Florida Winter Meltdown will mark a return to the fast, high-banked half mile for the first time since Brad Leighton took the checkered flag there in 2010. In addition to being the first PASS National Championship Series race, the Winter Meltdown will also serve as the opener for the PASS South Super Late Model points season. Last year, Maine’s Joey Doiron parlayed a win in the Winter Meltdown, held last year at Auburndale Speedway, to runner-up finishes in PASS National and PASS North Super Late Model points.

Gray Sets Sights on 2014 Granite State Pro Stock Series Title

Northfield, VT– In the eyes of Barry Gray, the 2013 season was an off year. The Belchertown, MA driver picked up a win, 4 top 5’s, and finished 7th in points, but had 4 DNF’s, 3 of which occurred before lap 10. Gray’s goals are to have more success during qualifying rounds, and to practice self-preservation. “To finish first, first you must finish,” Gray adds.

Gray’s racing career wasn’t a planned thing. One day, Gray headed to see a man named Bruce Clark to pick up a washing machine. What he brought back with him was a race car. The irony of the situation is that same Bruce Clark’s daughter, Christina, would catch the eye of Gray’s son Adam years later, as they are due to be married this upcoming October.

Barry Gray has enjoyed a storied career. His Pro Stock days at Riverside Park and Monadnock have given him 6 titles, including the New Hampshire State Championship between Monadnock and Twin State Speedway in 2007. He has captured over 100 victories in his career, including a pair of wins in the Granite State Pro Stock Series itself. To say he is a premier level driver would be an understatement.
