Phil Evans Wants to Maintain Momentum

Phil Evans of Old Saybrook, CT is looking for consistency this season at Waterford Speedbowl. The driver of the #12 Street Stock will be competing at the 3/8 mile oval full-time, with up to two races at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park added. “Like every year, I concentrate on wins,” Evans said. “I’d like to top last year. Also run consistently in the top five.”

Evans finished fifth in points with two wins, 10 top fives, and 17 top 10s in 21 starts last season. He had four top fives in his last five starts.

“I think we came out a little behind,” Evans said. “I missed three races because of an injury, but the second half of the year I think we were the most consistent. The car handled great and that helped the motor. I’m hoping that consistency continues to this year. At the beginning of last year we couldn’t find a setup I liked.”

Whelen Mod Tour News & Notes: Thompson

Silly Season Brings Sea Of Change To 2014 Opener

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Each offseason brings change on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, but when the 2014 campaign begins with this week’s Icebreaker 150 presented by Town Fair Tire, there will be a host of newcomers and familiar faces in different places at Thompson (Conn.) Speedway Motorsports Park.

Leading the sea of change are three past champions that are now with different teams than when we last saw them in last year’s Thompson World Series. The headlining transaction saw 2012 champ Doug Coby move to the No. 2 of Mike Smeriglio III Racing while 2008 titlist Ted Christopher has combined his own resources with those of Berkley Racing to return the No. 13 to the tour. Seven-time champ Mike Stefanik has reunitd with car owner Ed Marceau and will pilot a Chevrolet numbered 1 on a part-time basis.

In complementary moves, Matt Hirschman has returned to the tour for the first time since 2011 to replace Coby in the Darling Racing No. 52, and rookie Tommy Barrett Jr. supplanted Stefanik in the Our Racing No. 22. Bryon Chew also stepped out of his family’s No. 88 and tabbed Woody Pitkat to fill the seat for the coming season. Consequently, the Hillbilly Racing No. 79 that Pitkat left will have rookie Spencer Davis behind the wheel for a part-time northern slate while competing full-time with the Whelen Southern Modified Tour.

Brunnhoelzl Remains Consistent In Pursuit Of Fifth Crown

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Even though he reached Victory Lane three times in the first half of the 2013 season, it was the consistent top finishes down the stretch that secured George Brunnhoelzl III a fourth NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour title. In 2014, the native Long Islander has picked up right where he left off.

Entering Saturday’s South Boston 150 at South Boston (Va.) Speedway, Brunnhoelzl has posted finishes of second and third, respectively, through this season’s first two events at Caraway Speedway and Southern National Motorsports Park. The 2014 start is quite similar to the 2013 finish, when he closed out a third straight title with six podium finishes.

Likewise, this season’s start is eerily similar to that of last year. Brunnhoelzl, originally from West Babylon, N.Y., was second in the 2013 opener at Caraway and finished fourth at Southern National. A run of three straight wins then began with the South Boston 150.

Irene Venditti Passes at Age 94

On March 28th the world lost one of it’s heroes when Irene Venditti , 94, left the world of the living, passing away peacefully in her sleep.

Former Late Model champion Jeff Smith of Old Lyme, CT is focused on wins. Wiscasset Speedway Driver Profile: Tasha Dyer #32

“Racing is a way of life,” said Tasha Dyer. She was introduced to racing at a young age by her grandfather Ed “Bub” Orr. “He loves the sport,” said Dyer. “He would rather work on them then drive them though!”

Her two uncles, Mike Orr and Steve Pierpont are also racers. Dyer said, “Mike started it all when he raced late models in “05. When he stopped racing I picked it up. I ran one race in 2006, then the next year I went full time.”

“My uncle, Steve Pierpont still races Strictly Street. I’ve always been a fan of his. Between him, Mike, and my grandfather, is why I wanted to start racing.”

Dyer, now 20, begins her seventh racing season this year. Dyer has hopes for the coming season, “I am mostly going for top 5 finishes this year,” said Dyer. I want to stay consistent and bring the car home in one piece every week. It would also be nice to get a championship again.”

Gelinas, Helliwell File Entries for Icebreaker at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park (TSMP)

Walpole, NH — As the Icebreaker at TSMP quickly approaches; some big names have filed last minute entries.

Winner of the last race for the Granite State Pro Stock Series (GSPSS) at TSMP, Larry Gelinas has announced his intent to pick up another win at the 5/8 mile oval. The entry with the GSPSS makes for a busy weekend for the Buxton, ME driver, as he is also running for points in the Late Model division at TSMP for the 2014 season. Gelinas races as much as anybody on the tour, entering around 50 races during the 2013 season, including 11 races with the GSPSS en route to a runner-up finish in the championship standings. Even with the experience at the track and with the series, Gelinas isn’t sold on himself being a runaway favorite. Gelinas stated “If Mechalides is there, he will be tough. (Mike and Tommy) O’Sullivan’s are tough. It could be somebody different. By the sounds of it, there are a lot of good drivers entering the race.”

Two-time defending ACT champion “The Punisher” Wayne Helliwell, JR has filed entry with his Bruce Bernhardt Motorsports ride. The duo has turned heads on just about anything they’ve been a part of on the racing scene, and the GSPSS is no exception. Helliwell, JR picked up the win last year at Riverside Speedway in Groveton, NH in dominating fashion, holding off the aforementioned Gelinas for his first checkers in the series. “We have a brand new car, so we will be shaking the car down at the Icebreaker,” Bernhardt says. “However, we don’t attend a race we don’t think we can win.” Helliwell is more reserved about the first race of the year. He comments, “We want to take it step-by-step. We would like to get a good practice in and work the bugs out.” Helliwell will be running a limited schedule in the GSPSS, as the Dover, NH driver will be turning “Outlaw” in 2014 by running partial schedules with the Pro All-Star Series, ACT, and GSPSS.

Turn the Page: Galko Determined to Improve

Former SK Light Modified Champion Sets Top-10 Goal

Matt Galko of Meriden, CT is eager for the potential of a new racing season.

Galko, admittedly, did not have lady luck on his side last season. Galko had one top five and five top 10s in 17 starts at Stafford Motor Speedway last season. He missed one race due to a blown engine in practice.

“We struggled a lot with the chassis at Stafford, which is why we got a new one,” Galko said. “It was a really rough season. We had some good races with a fifth place and sixth place finish with a handful of top-10’s, but we didn’t have much luck. We had some good runs in the 25 car also with a fourth and a fifth but once again our luck wasn’t there. In the 150 lapper at Waterford, we were running around sixth and our motor blew on the last lap. … So all in all, it was a tough season but that just motivates me more to come back strong next season. It helps that I’m surrounded by such great people and everyone works so hard and is determined to win.”

Galko is building a new Troyer car in advance of the NAPA Auto Parts Spring Sizzler at Stafford on April 26-27. If the car is not ready, Galko will use the Chassis Dynamics car that he drove last season. Regardless, he hopes to debut the new chassis this season. Galko intends to compete at Stafford full-time, pending sponsorship. He picked up additional sponsorship from Pay-less Oil, and A&R Auto Body.

New Chassis and Engine Have Glen Reen Excited for 2014 SK Modified® Season at Stafford Motor Speedway

Stafford Springs, CT — For Wilbraham, MA native Glen Reen, the 2014 SK Modified® season at Stafford Motor Speedway is full of promise. After only running a handful of races last season, Reen and his #17 TechEdProducts.com team have been busy during the winter putting together a new chassis to go along with a virtually brand new engine. These two factors have Reen excited about his prospects for the 2014 season at the Connecticut half-mile facility.

“I’m real excited about this season,” said Reen. “Everything on the car is new for this year. We have a new chassis and we rebuilt our motor last season after it blew up. We ran the engine once last year after we rebuilt it but we ended up getting wrecked after 12 laps so the engine only has 12 laps on it. Ralph Ridgeway put the motor together for us and we’re going to be working with R.A.D. Automachine this year. Ralph ran NHRA and he was inducted into their Hall of Fame a couple of years ago, so he really knows his way around an engine. Ralph first built an engine for me in 2009 and I remember blowing by Teddy [Christopher] on the straightaway and after the race he came up to me asking about who built my engine. I have almost my entire Whelen Modified Tour team from 2009 coming back with me and we have a notebook that we’ve been building up since the 2011 season, we have some great support from TechEdProducts.com, PioneerValleyWheelRepair.com, magunpermit.com, Squid Decals, and Reen Motorsports, so we have a lot of good momentum going for us right now.”

Although he has yet to win a feature in the SK Modified® division, Reen certainly knows his way to NAPA Victory Lane. From 2006 to 2007 in Stafford’s SK Light Modified division, he won a total of 6 races with 5 of those wins coming in 2007 when he finished fourth in the final points standings. Reen is not only eyeing up his first career SK Modified® victory this season, he also has his sights set on making a run at the track championship.

Woody Pitkat Looking Forward to NAPA Spring Sizzler and New Beginnings With #88 Buzz Chew Team on Whelen Modified Tour

Stafford Springs, CT — As the sun is ready to rise and shine over another NAPA Auto Parts Spring Sizzler at Stafford Motor Speedway, one driver that is looking forward to the race is Woody Pitkat. In the off-season, Pitkat moved from the #79 team to the #88 Buzz Chew Auto team and he will take over the driving duties from Bryon Chew. While the #88 team is based in Old Forge, NY, Pitkat has already been to their shop several times in preparation for the 2014 season and he is excited about what he has seen at the shop.

“I brought a couple of seats up to them around Christmas time and we mounted one seat in the new car and put a seat in one of the old cars,” said Pitkat. “I’ve been back to the shop a couple more times since then. Spot, the crew chief, has been unbelievable and this is the best deal I’ve ever had. I’m so appreciative of what they’ve done for me so far, they’ve given me snowmobiles to ride, we’ve stayed at their house, it’s been pretty cool. It’s been great to get up there and see how they maintain the cars and what they do to prep the cars and try to gel as a team early on. I’ve been so looking forward to the season, I’ve told them to send me a selfie of the racecar because I haven’t seen the complete car yet. We’re supposed to practice at Thompson this weekend and I feel like this is my best opportunity yet on the Tour. They have great equipment, the cars are prepped awesome, and everything is there so it’s up to me now to show what I have in a Tour car. If I can’t run up front or win now with this equipment, I probably shouldn’t be on the Tour. They have Troyer cars with Billy the Kid engines so I’ll have the same combination of chassis and engine as the SK car. I really have to thank Billy because he put in a good word for me with Bryon to get me that ride this season and I have to thank Buzz and Bryon for giving me the opportunity to drive their car. They’re a great bunch of guys and I can’t thank them enough. We have great sponsors with Buzz Chew Chevrolet, Elbow East Restaurant, NAPA Tolland, Goodridge Hoses, and Billy the Kid and hopefully I can get the job done for them.”

In three seasons of competition, Chew has a career best finish of fourth at Monadnock this past season and a career best finish of 17th in the points standings. Pitkat is coming off of his best season on the Whelen Modified Tour with a 9th place finish in the points and he is confident that teaming up with the Chew team will lead to great things this season.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 28, 2014) — Celebrating the sport’s commitment to protecting and preserving the environment, NASCAR today officially kicked off its second annual NASCAR Race to Green™ initiative at Martinsville Speedway. NASCAR is sports’ sustainability leader and this effort is intended to build awareness around the programs the sanctioning body, industry, and a wide range of partners have in place to help reduce the sport’s carbon footprint.

The 2014 running of the event will mark the 40th time it has been held. The traditional season-opening event will feature nine divisions, headlined by the first championship race for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour (NWMT).

Defending NWMT Champion, Ryan Preece, will begin his title defense behind the wheel of the Eric Sanderson-owned No. 16, but it won’t be without some stiff competition. Coby teamed up with Mike Smeriglio, III to drive the Dunleavy’s Truck & Trailer Repair Chevrolet. Another driver on the move this year was nine-time NASCAR regional touring series champion, and defending Icebreaker race winner, Mike Stefanik. Air Titan 2.0 Unveiled at Martinsville Speedway

NASCAR Debuts Latest Version Of Cutting-Edge Track-Drying Technology

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 28, 2014) – NASCAR introduced an evolution in innovation today – the results of which will continue to elevate a fan’s race-viewing experience to an even greater level.

The Toyota-hauled next generation of Air Titan, the cutting-edge track-drying technology, made its race weekend debut at Martinsville Speedway today. Air Titan 2.0 is a more compact, more nimble and more environmentally friendly version of its innovative predecessor – one that since its introduction in February 2013 has rescued multiple races, including this year’s Daytona 500.

Air Titan 2.0 signals a major step forward in NASCAR’s innovation cycle. It replaces the bulky support vehicles required by Air Titan 1.0 with a single, self-contained unit that’s perched on the bed of a Toyota Tundra. By addressing the size of the power source, NASCAR now has the ability to deploy up to 21 units in Toyota Tundras at larger venues and operate more efficiently on smaller tracks.

15-40 Connection Teams Up with Rob Fuller Motorsports to Honor Dave McGrath at Thompson Speedway

RobFullerDaveMcGrathWESTBOROUGH, Mass. (March 27, 2014) — While he may not get to drive the race car, cancer survivor Dave McGrath’s role on the #15 Rob Fuller Motorsports team at the Thompson Icebreaker race on April 6 will be no less important.

Each year 77,000 teens and young adults between the ages of 15 – 40 are diagnosed with cancer.* Yet, since 1975, improvements in cancer survival rates have not kept pace with other age groups. Delayed diagnosis is an import culprit of this problem.

Rob Fuller Motorsports and 15-40 Connection have teamed up to feature young cancer survivors during the 2014 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season in an effort to raise awareness of cancer symptoms and the obstacles teens and young adults face to diagnose cancer at earlier stages. McGrath will attend the Thompson Icebreaker race as a honorary crew member for RFM and his picture will be featured on the race car.
