Barrett Makes Waterford Late Model Plans

NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour rookie Tommy Barrett Jr. will add Late Model racing to his schedule beginning with Saturday’s feature at Waterford Speedbowl. Barrett will drive in all Late Model events that do no conflict with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour.

The Millis, MA driver finished third in his Late Model debut driving the #27 Butler’s Auto Body car for Ted Butler.

“It was a lot of fun,” Barrett said. “Not nearly as much grip but also less horsepower. (You) can bump and bang a little more. I look forward to this weekend.”

“(The competition is) very strong,” Barrett said. “(You) have Keith Rocco, Bruce Thomas, (and) Jeff Smith. (There is) great quality but would be nice to get a few more cars out there.”

Barrett finished 22nd in the inaugural Bullring Bash at Lee USA Speedway on Sunday. A crash on lap 90 eliminated the two-time VMRS victor.

“Awesome car count and quality of cars,” Barrett said. “Crowd should’ve been better but it’s tough on Mother’s Day. Jim Schaefer and the Racing Guys did a great job putting this whole deal together. We had a great run going. I was going to be battling Hirschman for the win but our day ended 10 laps early when we got stuffed in the wall.”

Memorial Day weekend will see Barrett return to Modified competition. Barrett will pilot the Robert B. Our #22 at Stafford Motor Speedway for the TSI Harley-Davidson 125. A former standout at the historic half mile, Barrett won his first pole at the NAPA Spring Sizzler before he finished 11th. He will make his first Valenti Modified Racing Series start of the season at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park on May 29 in the King Cadillac GMC 75.
