Former Driver & Owner Don Flynn Passes

Donald P. Flynn, a longtime resident of Suffield and devoted husband of Frances, passed away Thursday Morning, November 27th, after an extended series of illnesses. Born in Hartford and raised in Bloomfield, he was the second of four children of the late Paul and MarieAntoinette Flynn. Don was a truly self-made man, admired by his friends, feared by his adversaries, and respected by everyone, he built and owned a number of businesses beginning with Standard Auto Body, but was most well-known for his time owning and operating Bradley Air Parking in Windsor Locks, CT and later Executive Parking in Suffield.

Don was a man of many interests but his lifelong passion was cars which he collected, restored and raced for almost his entire life. Don had a significant racing career that ranged from short track modified racing throughout the northeast to major tracks through the Southeast; his home is still filled with trophies from many wins and championships both as a driver and later an owner. Don restored countless vintage cars and was always starting a new project with his loyal friends and former pit crew, especially Danny and Lindo and had a wide interest in collector cars ranging from Hot Rods and Sportscars to Vintage Race Cars. Don spent some of his best years after racing at his homes in Florida, Westbook, CT and Woodstock Vermont, enjoying many years there with friends and family. Don was a born worker, a perfectionist and always needed to keep busy. Although he enjoyed “vacationing” it was almost always a series of extensive projects that kept him busy wherever he was located, especially operating heavy equipment at his Vermont home. Don’s life cannot be summed up easily in a few paragraphs because he was truly larger than life to his family, friends and almost any one that knew him. Weather it was basketball, golf, boxing or taking up skiing in his late 60’s, throughout his life, Don was extremely competitive, and always up for a new challenge.

Don is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 34 years, Frances who was inseparable from him; six sons, Donny, Timothy and wife Angela, Peter and wife Lynn, David and wife Vanessa, and Dallas and Betsy; and his cherished daughter Annette who was by his side every day until his death, and her husband Jeff; sisters, Andrea and Maureen; grandchildren Erika, Alex, Jeff, Sam, Molly, Lucy, Gary, Shawn and Laura, and recently has been enjoying time with his special new Grandchild Deegan who will miss his Pa very much. Don was predeceased by his first wife, Bernadette, his daughter Jeannie, brother Patrick and sister Joan. Special thanks to Don’s trusted long time doctor, Dr. Stephen Yuan and more recently Dr. Sadaf Khorosani. Funeral Services will be Tuesday, December 2, at 9AM from The Heritage Funeral Home, 1240 Mountain Road, West Suffield. Followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Sacred Heart Church at 10AM. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Poquonock. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday, December 1 from 5-8PM. Memorial donations may be made to the Suffield Volunteer Ambulance, P.O. Box 642, Suffield, CT 06078. For on-line condolences please visit:

Accord Speedway ‘Gobbler’ Postponed Until Spring 2015 Despite Valiant Effort By Speedway Management To Complete The Post-Thanksgiving Event; Robust Crowd, 134 Race Cars Were On Hand; Refund Information Announced

ACCORD, NY – Despite a valiant effort by management, racers and fans, the second edition of the ‘Gobbler’ fell to Mother Nature’s wrath.

A winter storm that blanketed the area with snow on Wednesday did not stop hard-working Accord Speedway owner Gary Palmer from attempting to complete the unique, post-Thanksgiving ‘Gobbler’ co-promotion with Brett Deyo of BD Motorsports Media LLC. Palmer, his family and a number of volunteers removed the snow from the speedway and grandstand areas, in addition to plowing the pit area and parking lot in advance of Saturday’s scheduled program.

The event was deemed “a go” after a final look-over of the track and grounds on Friday at the Ulster County venue.

Anders enjoyed a season for the ages at Greenville Pickens, and in the process became the first new NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion since 2010.

McCall Adds National Title To Impressive Record

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Winning is nothing new for Lee McCall as the veteran crew chief has celebrated victories in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series to the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series throughout his 20-year career, but none probably mean as much as his recent accomplishment.

McCall and Anthony Anders decided before the season to team up and race full time at Greenville Pickens Speedway and the results speak for themselves as McCall turned the wrenches and co-owned the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series championship winning car and team.

“I won at every level of NASCAR racing and I have some great memories but this championship is pretty special,” McCall said. “To win this at our home track means an awful lot to all of us and this is something we will be ready to celebrate when we get to Charlotte.”

New Jersey Mandating Head & Neck Restraints

New Jersey will mandate head and neck restraints for drivers at ovals beginning January 1, 2015. Any vehicle in subchapter four of the regulations is subject to the new rule. All race cars except Quarter Midgets are covered, including cars intended for adults. Specific divisions are not provided to prevent loopholes.

Detective M. Kowalski of the New Jersey State Police wrote the tech bulletin that will be sent to track operators by the superintendent. According to the tech bulletin, “All drivers participating in asphalt or dirt oval racing subject to NJSA 62-4, will be required to wear a head and neck restraint system meeting SFI specification 38.1.” The equipment “must have an SFI tag,” according to Kowalski. He expects to meet with track operators within the next month and a half to review this.

Kowalski, who joined the unit six years ago, said the cost has come down and more information is available about the reliability.

“With all the data that’s out there from HANS and all the other companies that have done the crash testing, they’re pretty much a proven device at this point,” Kowalski said. “It’s just like a seat belt. We know they work. We know they save lives.”

Wall: Blewett Looks to Add Another Win

Jimmy Blewett of Howell, NJ is returning to Wall (NJ) Stadium Speedway Saturday with a victory in mind. The last area Modified race of the season will be the 41st edition of the Turkey Derby. Blewett will drive the Woody’s Roadside Tavern No. 7NY for the 150 lap Tour Modified race and the B&B Paving No. 18 in the 100 lap Wall Modified race.

As a multi-time winner of the event, Blewett knows people expect him to win the event. “We go there every year and we shoot to win,” Blewett said. “That’s the only reason we go.” Blewett understands how ending the year with a strong performance boosts morale.

“You only get to run it once a year, so it means a lot. … This is a race that I wait all year for every year and I want to go there to win every year and every year I prepare to go there to win. Sometimes I feel like I over prepare, but it’s just a prestigious race.”

Blewett believes he has an advantage in knowing his home track. He noted that drivers like Matt Hirschman, Ryan Preece and Les Hinckley have added to the depth of the field. “You get guys there that race week in and week out could be a threat anytime they race there. …You’ve seen that the last three or four years. This year you have Ronnie Silk, Ryan Preece, Woody Pitkat is going to make the trip. You’re going to have a lot of outsiders come down here. You’ve got Matt Hirschman who’s been good there every year and been fast every year, whose won a couple of times already.”

Bruno Joins Airborne Park Speedway Ownership Group, Named General Manager

Partnership with Devil’s Bowl Speedway strengthens

PLATTSBURGH, NY – Airborne Park Speedway has taken another step toward the future, as Mike Bruno has joined the track’s business ownership group.  Bruno served as the Competition Director at Airborne in 2014 and will expand on that role moving forward; he has partnered with Jamie Atkins and Steve Fuller to form the ownership group.

Effective immediately, Bruno will take over day-to-day business operations as the track’s General Manager, while Atkins will step back from the daily operations and take on a support role.  Bruno co-owns and promotes Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Vermont with his wife, Alayne, and says that the two tracks will continue building on a partnership that began last season.

“I obviously have a deep interest in the success of Devil’s Bowl, but I also want to see Airborne thrive.  We made big strides this year and I’m excited for the future,” Bruno said.  “The two tracks share a lot of the same competitors and fans, and both are part of the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series, so it just makes sense to take this next step.  Airborne has always been one of my home tracks and I’m just as committed to its growth as I am to Devil’s Bowl’s.”

Zacharias Continues Championship Run

Four NASCAR Track Titles In Five Years At Chemung

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Jimmy Zacharias’ past success at Chemung Speedrome has elevated his expectations to the point that winning 40-percent of this year’s modified races qualified as just okay.

“It wasn’t bad,” Zacharias said of his latest championship season at the .375-mile oval located in the hills of New York’s Southern Tier. “It wasn’t as good as the previous four, but it was still good.”

The 23-year-old Zacharias won six of 15 Sunoco Modified division races at Chemung in 2014. While that was technically a step back from wins in eight of 17 features a year ago, it was still plenty sufficient to take home the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series track championship for the second season in a row, and fourth time in five years.

Mayfield Bound for Turkey Derby XLI

Mayfield Enjoying Return to Racing

Jeremy Mayfield of Owensboro, KY will be among the entries for Saturday’s Turkey Derby XLI at Wall (NJ) Stadium Speedway. He is in a better place than he was a year ago, back behind the wheel.

“We’ve got a really great team,” Mayfield said. “We’ve put together some good guys and good equipment and I’ve just had a great year. … We’ve led a lot of laps in the KOMA stuff and we’re competitive and we’ve been running good and it’s just been a great year for me so far.”

“We knew it was a big race and we’re doing all the races we can everywhere and just feel like that would be a good one to run and driving in the Modifieds, I’ve had a good time doing that.”

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series winner enters the event with high expectations.

“I just want to go into it just doing the best we can and I know I’ve got a good car, in Dave Brigati’s car because I know they’ll be fast and we’ll take all we get.”  “… I’ve been watching a lot of races on YouTube, watching the track and how it works and all that stuff, so I think we’ll be pretty good, pretty quick.”

Mayfield is familiar with adapting to tracks as he traveled to many new places this season. The banked 1/3 mile oval will be bring Mayfield back to his roots racing in Tennessee.

“I’ve run places that have got a lot more banking than that. Bristol was one of ’em and I kind of grew up in Nashville and running on a 5/8 down there, which is high banked, and then I run Highland Rim Tennessee, which is huge. Vice President and General Manager of ACT, Darla Hartt said, “We are delighted that Thompson has invited ACT to the dance! We are excited to show fans at TSMP an ACT Late Model 100 lap championship race.”

The event is expected to draw teams and fans from all six New England states, New York and the Province of Quebec. The entry calls for thirty (30) starters. The super-fast 5/8ths mile oval at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park should fit the style of the ACT Late Model teams. The ACT Quebec Series races primarily on half-mile tracks, and US ACT teams have had lots of “long track” experience with numerous events at the Airborne Speedway in Plattsburgh, NY and the Devil’s Bowl Speedway half-mile in West Haven, VT. The ACT annual visit to the New Hampshire Motor Speedway during the NASCAR Cup weekend in September has proven to be very competitive and exciting racing for fans. The local weekly Late Model teams that use the ACT rules at TSMP, Waterford and Seekonk are expected to join the ACT regulars.
