ATQMRA Topless at Borgers on July 11

The American Three Quarter Midget Racing Association will invade Borgers Speedway on Saturday July 11th for some wingless action. A modified set of rules will be used to lend parity to competition between the TQ’s and 600 Micro sprints for Borgers Speedway races. The ATQMRA will be allowing a drop race for the Borgers races as a result of the shortness of notice with their addition to the schedule. 2014 ATQMRA Champion Matt Janisch will be in contention at Borger’s.

In order to keep competition between the TQs and 600s on an even keel on the tight confines of Borger’s Speedway a few alterations from the current rules package will be allowed for the Borger’s races only. The Micro Sprints will follow the rules package adopted for the 600s to race in ATQMRA competition with the 600s being allowed to race at the full 60″ width measurement and the TQs allowed to move out to a 56″ width. The 600s will be required to follow the US6A rules package with the exception of the rev limiter regulation. Open rev limiters will be allowed.

After Borgers speedway was paved for the beginning of the 2012 season following a successful run as a dirt track the speedway met with limited car counts with fits and starts at success but nothing sustainable. Several attempts to generate interest in small car pavement racing only met with limited success during the track’s first three years of pavement racing. At the end of the 2014 season the passing of Borger’s Speedways Patriarch Glenn Borger created a very uncertain future for the speedway. The Borger family was left with a bad taste in their collective mouths after attempting to lease the speedway and decided it was time to sell the property that was home to Borger’s Speedway. Anyone who wanted to run the facility as a race track would have to first purchase the property.

Rumor and innuendo were the word of the day for several months with a number of parties expressing interest in purchasing the facility. Pat VanVarrick who raced the previous two years on the pavement at Borger’s and spent a number of years racing at the facility on dirt had a strong interest in saving the track. An agreement was reached between him and the family for his purchase of the speedway.

The primary focus was on acquiring the property to keep it a race track. To that point little focus has been placed on what would happen for the 2015 season. A pair of open practice dates were held since VanVarrick took over the property with a handful of racers attending. The scheduling of the ATQMRA race is the beginning of a bright future for the speedway. Behind the scenes the work of putting together the classes that will race at the speedway as well as rules packages for each and a full schedule of events is in the works. The ATQMRA is looking forward to building a strong future of short track racing with Borger’s Speedway as a cornerstone of that effort.

ATQMRA News and Notes:2014 ATQMRA Champion Matt Janisch is likely to try to continue his undefeated outdoor streak at Borger’s on the 11th. After capping the 2014 season in style with a win at Wall Stadium’s Turkey Derby Janisch has been undefeated in TQ midget competition outdoors. 2015 saw him debut a second generation of his championship winning car. He won the club opener at Mahoning Valley and earned Victory at Chapel Hill Speedway putting his outdoor win streak at three. He will face off head to head with long time rival Ryan Tidman who is on a two race winning streak of his own after capturing wins at Both New York tracks on the ATQMRA Schedule banking wins at Bethel and Oswego Speedway. ATQMRA President Buddy Sload has been consistently fast at Borgers Speedway but has yet to visit Victory lane there. Sitting in a tie for third in the points standings Sload’s consistent speed should serve him well when the organization takes to the short track at Borger’s where he seeks his first victory and will be looking to end the streaks of both Janisch and Tidman.
