Catalano Debuts Tonight

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — Tommy Catalano of Ontario, NY is making his TQ Midget debut this weekend at Boardwalk Hall. He is driving for the Brainards. Catalano hopes to compete at Trenton next month.

“They’re definitely quick,” Catalano said. “They’re fun. They’re different compared to the Modifieds, for sure.”

Catalano will make his NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour debut this season. He hopes to attempt five races ahead of a potential full season in 2017. His schedule includes Oswego (NY) Speedway, and one race at Stafford (CT) Motor Speedway, and Thompson (CT) Speedway Motorsports Park.

“We’ve been talking about it for a while and having that race up there. That kind of pushed the situation a little bit and kind of I guess set us off that way and so it’s going to get us hooked. Hopefully, we can make the best of it.”

Calabrese Racing Indoors Ahead of K&N Debut

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — David Calabrese of Toms River, NJ is optimistic entering tonight’s NAPA Know How Gambler’s Classic at Boardwalk Hall.

“Our car is pretty good right now,” Calabrese said. “…The car was a little tight last night in one of the heat races so we freed it up a little bit and the thing rotates a lot better through the center of the corner. So I think we have a pretty good shot of making the show tonight.”

Calabrese Motorsports will be competing in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East with their own cars and engines. The team sold their Modifieds and purchased  new K&N cars. The Mooresville, NC team will use their own cars and engines.

Shaw Shows Improvement in Second Year

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – DJ Shaw of Conway, NH was fast in yesterday’s qualifying heats at Boardwalk Hall. This is his second year in the TQ Midgets since running Champ Karts indoors. He won at Baltimore and had several strong runs at Atlantic City and Providence. This year’s new points system awards points for time trials and heats.

“It seems to be pretty good in race trim,” Shaw said. “We ran with (Erick) Rudolph there and there’s not many that can do that. This year the way the format is it kind of killed us and I can’t say that I really like the format. So we’ll just hope that we’re good enough to get a top two in the next deal.”

Shaw is running a car of his own creation, Dale Shaw Racecars of Center Conway, NH.

“It took us a lot of phone calls with people that we knew that built ’em. It was a lot of work. It took about twice as long as building a Super Late Model, so it’s a lot of pride in it and hopefully it is all worth it.”

Tyler Leary Ready for Rookie Season in Stafford Speedway’s Late Model Division

Stafford Springs, CT — When the curtain is lifted on the off-season and the green flag is displayed to drivers during the 45th Annual NAPA Spring Sizzler at Stafford Motor Speedway, 19-year old Hatfield, MA native Tyler Leary will make his debut behind the wheel of his #11 Amherst Trucking Late Model.  Leary comes to Stafford after 3 seasons in the Super Stock division at Monadnock Speedway, where he was the championship runner-up in 2015.

“I got started racing at Monadnock in 2013 and that was the first car that I ever drove,” said Leary.  “I’m definitely excited about it and I think it’s going to be a totally different environment for me.  It’s definitely going to be a little bit more competitive.  I don’t think we’re going to get the hang of it right away, it’s going to take some getting used to the track for me and for us to find the sweet spot with the car.  We’re still going to race at Monadnock this season along with Stafford and we’ve been pretty busy working on both cars.  Our Monadnock car is just about ready to go and we have Donnie Wood from R.A.D. going through our engine and we still have a lot of things left to work on.  Monadnock is a bit smaller and higher banked so it’ll take some getting used to the flat corners and higher speeds for sure.  We bought Scott Cook’s #5 car and we’re going to have Bob Fill helping us out with the chassis.”

With only 3 seasons of experience under his belt, Leary has shown a propensity to be a quick learner. He took Rookie of the Year honors in his first season and followed that up by winning Most Improved Driver in his second season and then being the championship runner-up this past season.  Leary would like to add another Rookie of the Year title to his collection of accolades and he also has his eyes on the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series points standings.

Bryan Narducci Joins DP Motorsports for 2016 Limited Late Model Season at Stafford Motor Speedway

Stafford Springs, CT — Since its move to the Stafford Speedway mini-mile the Wild Thing Kart series has been a proving ground for the future stars of the half-mile.  The list of Wild Thing Kart graduates that have successfully moved up to full size competition grows each year.  One of the new names on that list in 2016 will be 15 year-old Bryan Narducci, as he will join the DP Motorsports driver line-up in 2016.  Narducci will pilot the #28 Limited Late Model taking over the ride from DP Motorsports team owner David Arute, who is moving up to SK Lights this season.

“When I decided to move to the modifieds in 2016 my brother and I knew we wanted to give a driver in the kart series a chance to move up,” said David Arute.  “We’ve known Bryan since we’ve been involved in the karting series and thought he would be a great fit.  He has a great attitude and he eats, sleeps, and breathes racing just like we do.”

Narducci joins the Limited Late Model division after a very successful stint in the Wild Thing Kart Series. He started at the age of 9 in the Tiger B Sprint division, working up the ladder through the Junior Outlaw and finishing off in the 2015 season with 2 wins in the highly competitive Senior Outlaw division.

Maybury Material Handling Becomes Newest Member of Stafford Speedway Contingency Program

Stafford Motor Speedway is proud to welcome a familiar advertising partner back to the track for the 2016 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season in Maybury Material Handling.  Maybury will present a contingency bonus of $150 to each SK Modified® feature winner as well as a $125 bonus for each SK Light feature winner.  Maybury’s contingency bonus will bring the SK Modified® winner’s check up to $1,700 and the SK Light winner’s take to $550.

Maybury has been an active supporter in the Monday Night Wild Thing Kart Series over the last 10 years and prior to that was an avid partner at Stafford through Maybury Material Handling Event Nights, advertising and sponsoring Wade Gagner with his Late Model and ProStock teams.

“We’re excited to be part of the race program once again at Stafford,” said John Maybury, President of Maybury Material Handling.  “We took a little hiatus while our kids were growing up and going through college and now is the perfect time for us to get back into racing.  Racing never gets out of your blood.  We started out with Wade Gagner in the Late Model division and the ProStock division.  We also had several employees who put cars together and we all ran in the enduro races at Stafford.”

Maybury will have a presence each week in Victory Lane as a contingency partner for both the SK Modifieds and SK Light division and will also sponsor Cam McDermott in the #5 SK Modified car.

“We have a lot of race fans at Maybury Material Handling whether it’s NASCAR or some other form of racing like motorcycles,” said Maybury.  “I’d love to see some of our customers come out and see Cam McDermott’s #5 Maybury sponsored SK Modified® car and see Stafford and hopefully our involvement might help bring some other companies who know about us to the track.  We hope that Stafford has a great season and it never rains on Friday!”

Since 1976, Maybury Material Handling has been designing, supplying, and servicing a wide variety of material handling equipment throughout New England.  Maybury provides customers from a wide range of industries with solutions to move, lift, and store their parts and products.  Maybury has become one of the largest and most successful material handling companies in the Northeast with nearly 100 employees and they are a distributor for approximately 1,300 manufacturers.  Maybury supplies virtually all types of material handling equipment, including many ergonomic & productivity enhancing products.  Customers range from large manufacturers to small, family-owned businesses.  A diverse product line, knowledgeable personnel, and an emphasis on safety combine to make Maybury a recognizable leader in the material handling industry.

“This is our 40th anniversary year of being in business and we have 25 service technicians out in vans performing service and our customers are Lowe’s, Home Depot, Costco, Amazon, and we could go on right down the list,” said Maybury.  “We provide warehousing equipment, forklift trucks, sweepers and scrubbers to keep facilities clean and we have parts, service, and rental for all that equipment.  We’re approaching 100 employees, last year was our best year ever, and we’re looking forward to duplicating that.”

The first Maybury contingency bonuses of the 2016 season will be up for grabs during Stafford Speedway’s 45th Annual NAPA Auto Parts Spring Sizzler Weekend on April 22-24.  The SK Modified® feature winner that weekend will have to put in some OT behind the wheel as it will be a special 45-lap feature to commemorate the 45th Anniversary of the NAPA Spring Sizzler.  Tickets for the “Greatest Race in the History of Spring” are on sale now at the Speedway Box Office.  Tickets are priced at $38.50 for adult general admission tickets, $5.00 for children ages 6-14, and children ages 5 and under are admitted free of charge when accompanied by an adult.  Reserved seating is priced at $42.00 for all ages.  As always, Stafford Motor Speedway offers free parking with overnight parking available.  All tickets are good for both Saturday and Sunday admission.  All ticket prices include 10% CT Admission Tax.

Lichty Among Top Indoor Drivers

Mike Lichty of Innerkip, ON, Canada has been one of the top performers in indoor racing. His seven top fives in 10 Gambler’s Classic starts leads all drivers.

“That’s some interesting history,” Lichty said. “I wasn’t aware of that. … I think the biggest thing is just obviously being there at the end and having a real good car under you and we’ve taken time over the years and everything on this car compared to a lot of the cars out there is built. It’s specifically built for indoors, you know, so heavier heims. It can actually take a hit compared to most cars out there and we’ve always had success, don’t matter really if it’s just Atlantic City or where the tour has taken us. Indoors we’ve ran well with this car.”

Since his 2006 debut, Lichty has 9 top fives and 14 top 10s in 16 starts at Boardwalk Hall. In 30 indoor TQ Midget starts, he has a 7.1 average finish. He has two wins (Baltimore and Providence), 18 top fives, and 24 top tens.

Ladyga Up to Speed in Atlantic City

ATLANTIC CITY, NJ — Nick Ladyga of Voluntown, CT is running well in his indoor debut for this weekend’s NAPA Know How Racing Weekend at Boardwalk Hall.

Ladyga was fifth fastest during the first practice Thursday night at 9.194.

“As the day went on I tried to, you know, just figure out the track,” Ladyga said. “We made the mistake of going out too early a couple of times and we got stuck behind some slow cars and the track didn’t really rubber up enough, so we kind of fell off in speed.”

Ladyga is running the same car he used outdoors last season with a different engine. The outdoor setup in stock compared to the indoors ‘outlaw’ engine. Ladyga’s car is a Mark Lafler chassis with a Billy Pippard engine (Pippard Racing Engines).

“Mark Lafler definitely helps out with the setups and if you can pay attention and listen to him you really can’t go wrong. And from what I’ve experienced the first couple of practices yesterday and the car was really fast my first time ever indoors, so I’m really looking forward to it. It’s a big confidence booster.”

The University of Rhode Island student is sporting his school colors on the No. 38 TQ Midget. The car originally had blue tin and a blue wrap.

“We peeled the outside off, made it white, and we left the inside blue and we had a good wrap going with it. My buddy Corey Barry hooked me up with a wrap and it came out pretty nice, so we kept the colors that way.”

Stafford Springs, CT — Dunleavy’s Truck and Trailer Repair of Brookfield will once again contribute a bonus to the winner of each SK Modified® and SK Light Modified feature at Stafford Speedway during the 2016 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season. Dunleavy’s will provide a winners bonus of $150 for each SK Modified® feature winner as well as a $125 bonus for each SK Light feature winner. With 22 races during the 2015 season, Dunleavy’s contributed $3,300 to SK Modified® feature winners and $2,750 to SK Light feature winners for a total of $6,050.

“I’ve always loved modified racing,” said Doug Dunleavy, owner of Dunleavy’s Truck & Trailer Repair. “We’re happy to be coming back and supporting both the SK Modifieds® and the SK Lights. I think the racing you see at Stafford is some of the best modified racing that you can find and I can’t wait to see what’s going to happen this season.”

Tom Fearn and Joey Ferrigno to Represent Stafford Motor Speedway at This Weekend’s PPB Motorsports Show in Philadelphia

Stafford Springs, CT — Stafford Motor Speedway will be well represented at the PPB Motorsports Racecar and Trade Show this weekend at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center with Tom Fearn and Joey Ferrigno in attendance.

Fearn was invited to the show to receive an award from Area Auto Racing News for having the most asphalt Late Model feature wins in a season in the Northeast and he will also be on hand to sign autographs. Fearn drove his #92 King Ward/SAFCO Foam/Sarat Ford Fusion to 10 wins at Stafford last season, including a stretch of four wins in a row. While his 10 wins for Fearn set a track Late Model record for wins in a season, his winning streak of four races came up one short of Woody Pitkat, who won 5 consecutive feature events during the 2007 season.

“We had a terrible start to the season, which took us out of the points chase,” said Fearn. “Once that happened, I told the guys that we needed to try to win every week and we ended up almost winning every week. There’s nothing like winning, it’s good for team morale and our sponsors, although I think I’d trade those 10 wins for the championship. Most of our work is done in the shop during the week and I’m just the lucky guy who gets to sit behind the wheel of the car. Over the winter we’re trying to make the car even better because when you’re on top, everyone is shooting for you and we know everyone else is working to make their cars better for 2016. Hopefully we can pick up where we left off in 2015 and win the championship. I think we’re one of the favorites for the championship, but we have to go out on the track and get the job done. We’re also working on getting our backup car better and we might even have a K&N East driver in our backup car on the night of the K&N East race at Stafford. We want to give someone a car that has a chance of winning the race so we’ll be working on that as well.”

Road Course Event Schedule for 2016 Sees Fan Favorites Return and New Offerings

Since the re-opening of the 1.7-mile road course at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park (TSMP) in 2014, the facility has worked on developing a robust and varied schedule of events that will cater to drivers and fans alike. This year’s schedule will see the return of some events that have quickly turned into annual traditions and new events will complement the already robust road course schedule. The most important is the launch of Thompson’s own Summer Road Race Series, which will offer New England racers and fans the opportunity to try something completely new in a friendly one-day format.

“We are delighted to continue on with some of the road racing traditions that we have started over the past several years. In addition, we are looking forward to hosting our own Summer Road Race Series, which will be headlined by the Legends. Last year they provided some of the best racing we have seen on our newly renovated road course has opened,” TSMP General Manager, Josh Vanada, remarked.

The road racing season will once again kick off with the 2nd Annual Icebreaker, Road Race Style on Friday and Saturday, April 29-30. This event will be first opportunity of the season to race, giving competition license holders the opportunity to dust off the racing cobwebs after a long winter. The event is open to holders of all licenses eligible for regional competition in SCCA, NASA, IMSA, PCA, VRT, ChumpCars, LeMons, VSCCA and BMWCCA. The event is unique in its format, giving drivers much more track time than is typical. An addition to this year’s event will be the first TSMP points race for the INEX Legends.

Early Entrants Abound For Expanded PASS Winter Meltdown at Greenville-Pickens

CHARLOTTE, NC (January 20) – With the release today of the complete weekend schedule for the upcoming PASS Winter Meltdown 150 at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, Super Late Model teams from across North America are beginning to make their final preparations. This year’s third running of the early-season event looks to be the biggest yet as the Meltdown moves to its new home in the Palmetto State. Northern drivers have dominated the two previous runnings of the PASS Winter Meltdown in Florida with New Hampshire’s Brad Leighton taking the checkered flag at New Smyrna Speedway in 2010 and Maine’s Joey Doiron claiming the victory at Auburndale Speedway in 2013.

Being on Super Bowl weekend, the PASS Winter Meltdown will be short track racing’s first major points event of 2016 and will also feature a 100 lap event for the South East Limited Late Models (Non-Winners), a 75 lapper for the Southeast Supertrucks, both paying $3,000 to win, and a 40 lap event for the Mini Stocks paying $2,000 to the winner. Rookie Hayden Humphries recently tested at Greenville-Pickens Speedway and plans to do “double-duty,” competing in both the PASS Super Late Model and Southeast Limited Late Model races. The PASS Winter Meltdown 150 lapper will go green on Saturday afternoon, February 6 at 2 PM and will serve as the first race of 2016 for the PASS South Super Late Models and the PASS National Championship Series.

The first batch of PASS Super Late Models entries has been released and includes drivers from all over the United States. Northwest short track legend Garrett Evans will pilot the famous #64 in the PASS Winter Meltdown. The Washington state driver will compete in several PASS events throughout the season, with an eye towards possible competing for the PASS National Championship. Texas youngster Derek Scott, Jr. will make his first trip to Greenville-Pickens Speedway for the Winter Meltdown. Scott competed in three PASS South events last year, including the Easter Bunny 150 at Hickory Motor Speedway, where he was the fastest qualifier and led the most laps. Michigan driver Vinnie Miller returns in 2016 after several impressive runs late last year. Miller has already announced his intention to compete on the full schedule as he races for the PASS South Super Late Model championship this year.

Excitement Building for Junior Champ Karts at Thunder Road

Barre, VT – Excitement is quickly growing for the return of youth Go-Kart racing at Barre, VT’s Thunder Road in 2016. An informational meeting held on Tuesday, January 19 for the Junior Champ Kart division drew attendance and interest from more than 20 youth competitors and their families throughout Vermont and New Hampshire.

CARS Tour Announces Loyalty Program for 2016, Program to Take Tour to the Next Level

Mooresville, NC 1/20/16- After a historic year in the inaugural CARS Tour season that saw an average of 55 cars per event between the two divisions, the Mooresville, North Carolina-based sanctioning body is proud to announce a loyalty program beginning in 2016. The program will be based on participation and not performance and is expected to take the tour to new heights in the future.

In addition to paying one of the best late model purses in the country, $5,500 to win and $550 to start for a total of $29,375 per division on thirty car fields, competitors will now qualify for free items such as VP Racing Fuel and Hoosier race tires, when showing their loyalty to the CARS Tour.

The program takes effect after a team competes in the first five races on the 2016 schedule. At the sixth race in the season (June 25th Greenville-Pickens) all program qualified teams will receive 20 gallons of VP-CRT race fuel for free. Beginning with race number seven (July 30th Orange County Speedway) every team on the program will receive one free Hoosier F-45RS tire throughout the remaining events as long as they do not miss a race. Points standing position does not dictate the ability to be qualified for the program.
