David Arute Ready to Challenge for SK Light Rookie of the Year at Stafford Motor Speedway

Stafford Springs, CT — Stafford Speedway’s SK Light Modified division currently has 7 rookie drivers signed up for the 2016 season and one rookie driver who is ready to make his mark on the division is Tolland native David Arute.  Arute will join the likes of Sean Foster, D.J. Burnham, Joey Ferrigno, and Norm Sears as drivers who have gotten started at Stafford racing in the Limited Late Model division and then moved up to the SK Modified® or SK Light ranks.

“I’m excited about this new chapter in my racing career,” said Arute.  “It’s pretty cool for me to have someone like Todd Owen in my corner, he’s been a great driver coach and mentor to me. We’ve been able to use his garage to work on our cars and we owe Todd a big thanks for all of his help.”

Arute began his career at Stafford in the Wild Thing Karts on Monday nights, racing in the Junior and Senior Outlaw divisions, notching the 2011 Senior Outlaw champion while also participating in his first full season of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing in the DARE Stock division.  Arute raced a partial schedule in the DARE Stock division during the 2010 season and a full year in 2011 before moving into the Limited Late Model division for the 2012 season.  During his 4 seasons in the Limited Late Model division, Arute posted impressive numbers with 11 victories and three top-3 finishes in the points standings, including a second place finish in 2013, coming up just 2 points shy of the title.

D.J. Burnham Moving Up to SK Modified® Division at Stafford Speedway

Stafford Springs, CT — After winning three races and being in contention for the SK Light championship in 2015, East Hartford native D.J. Burnham is making the jump to Stafford Speedway’s premier SK Modified® division for the 2016 season.  Burnham will carry sponsorship from Maneeley’s Banquet Facility and Salon Rausch on his #51 machine and will join fellow SK Light graduates Stephen Kopcik, Nick Salva, and Jeff Fialkovich in forming the 2016 SK Modified® Rookie Class.

“I’m pretty excited and I’m looking forward to racing against some of the best modified drivers in the northeast,” said Burnham.  “I know it’s going to be a lot tougher than the SK Lights but I’m pretty excited to see what we can do and I feel pretty confident we can do all right.  My father and brother are also excited about making the move up to the SK’s and they’re both really smart with giving me what I need in the car to be able to go faster.  I have to thank my father Dave, my mother Donna, and my brother Brian for all of their support, I couldn’t do this without them.”

Burnham was a complete rookie to the world of open wheel modified racing when he made the switch from Limited Late Models to SK Lights for the 2014 season and his 2 years of SK Light experience should help make his transition smoother despite the high level of competition that awaits in the SK Modified® division.

Rowan Pennink Seeking First NAPA Auto Parts Spring Sizzler Win with the Boehler Family #3

Stafford Springs, CT — For Rowan Pennink, the NAPA Spring Sizzler at Stafford Motor Speedway has been a race that has seemingly been within arms’ length from Pennink taking the checkered flag.  Pennink has made 8 career starts in “The Greatest Race in the History of Spring” recording an impressive 4 top-5 and 6 top-10 finishes.  Pennink’s best finish in the Sizzler was a second place effort back in 2011 and he had another podium finish with a 3rd place effort in 2014, both with his family owned #93.  When the green flag drops on this year’s 45th Annual NAPA Spring Sizzler, Pennink will be with a new team and behind the wheel of one of the most famous rides on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, the #3 “Ole Blue” Boehler Racing Enterprises Modified, with sponsorship from Cape Cod Copper and Bridgewater-Raynham Overhead Door.

“It’s really cool and I’m really happy about the opportunity to be driving the #3 Boehler car,” said Pennink.  “I can’t wait to get behind the wheel, the Sizzler is one of the biggest races of the year on the Tour and I’m looking forward to the race and hopefully we can get a good finish and put on a good show for all the fans.  We’ve been so close so many times at Stafford, it would be nice to get that one extra spot and be able to put the #3 into victory lane.  I know it’s been a while since the #3 car had a win and between that and me getting my first tour win at Stafford, it would be really cool.”

Pennink has driven his family owned car on the Tour since 2007 but it was a phone call from Michael Boehler at the conclusion of the 2015 season that got the ball rolling on bringing the two together for the 2016 season.

Taking on the ASCS Southwest Region in the John Ziehl Racing No. 20z, not much has changed for Ziehl going into this year’s lineup. Looking at the coming season, with new talent coming into the mix from New Mexico and around Arizona, Ziehl commented on going nine-for-nine.

“It makes it tougher for sure, but we’ll just keep concentrating on consistency, and trying to get on the podium every night.”

The second time the Central Arizona Speedway has kicked off the ASCS Southwest Region, Ziehl stood in Victory lane in 2015 with Lorne Wofford and Billy Chester completing the night’s podium. This Saturday’s appearance at the Central Arizona Speedway is one of only two on the 2016 season, with the ASCS Southwest Region also scheduled for April 23, 2016.

Saturday, February 27 at the Central Arizona Speedway is presented by Torco Fuels and includes Pure Stocks, Sport Mods, Bombers, and Mod Lites. The Central Arizona Speedway is located at 512 N 11 Mile Corner Rd. in Casa Grande, Ariz. For more information, log onto or call (480) 266-1378.

Kumpen Finishes 26th in History-Making Debut at Daytona International Speedway

2014 NASCAR Whelen Euro Series champion Anthony Kumpen headed to Daytona International Speedway with high expectations of continuing on his Nexteer Road to Daytona program – the path designed by the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series and Nexteer Automotive to bring European drivers to race in NASCAR in the US. Kumpen would make history in his superspeedway debut, becoming the first ever NASCAR Whelen Euro Series driver to race at Daytona International Speedway. Precision Performance Motorsports brought a fast No. 46 LeasePlan Chevrolet Camaro and Kumpen had a strong showing throughout the three practices, qualifying, and the 120-lap race. Unfortunately, he got caught up in the aftermath of an early on-track incident, causing damage to the front bumper cover of the Camaro, ultimately relegating him to a 26th-place finish.

Hasselt, Belgium-native Kumpen exceeded expectations on practice day as the NASCAR XFINITY Series season-opening race weekend got underway at Daytona International Speedway. In the day’s three scheduled practice sessions, Kumpen gained speed in each round finishing 26th, 17th, and seventh, respectively. This speed carried over into qualifying, where he had to qualify in on speed against a stout field where eight cars entered in the event would not make the starting lineup. Rolling off 23rd for his one-lap single-car run, Kumpen shot immediately to sixth-fastest, guaranteeing his spot in the 300-mile event.

Kumpen would start the PowerShares QQQ 300 from the 29th position. He hung back early in the race, drafting with a three-car pack behind the field in an effort to avoid incident. Unfortunately, on Lap 7, the front end of the No. 46 LeasePlan Chevrolet Camaro was struck by debris from a multi-car wreck that happened ahead of Kumpen. The caution flag flew and Kumpen took his Camaro down pit road and to the attention of the Precision Performance Motorsports team. They patched the hole that remarkably had not caused any internal damage, took four fresh Goodyear tires and fuel, and returned to the track.

Norman, D’Addario and Ming Win at Sebring

Sebring, FL – The F1600, F2000 and Atlantic Championship Series closed the second and final event of the Formula Race Promotions (FRP) Winter Exhibition with Sunday races at Sebring. In the F1600 Series, Calvin Ming took the win with lead changes happening by the corner, while Davy D’Addario won in F2000 and Ryan Norman took his second win in the Atlantic Championship Series.

After an exciting start at Sebring, the Team Pelfrey duo of Phillippe Denes and Kaylen Frederick led the first lap of the 30-minute race.

Similar to the race at Palm Beach earlier in the month, the lead battle quickly turned into a K-Hill versus Pelfrey affair, with K-Hill teammates Calvin Ming and Neal Verhagen challenging at the front of the field in a tight race that came down to the wire.

Clanton Gets Close Win Over Bloomquist at 2016 DIRTcar Nationals Finale

Brett Hearn has improbably come from behind win in the Super DIRTcar Series as Sheppard and Richards take home the ‘Big Gators’

BARBERVILLE, Fla. – Feb. 20, 2016 – It was a close call but Shane Clanton scored his second World of Outlaws Craftsman® Late Model Series victory of the 2016 season on Saturday night during the DIRTcar Nationals finale at Volusia Speedway Park.

It was the winner of the previous two nights, Josh Richards, who was the class of the field early, leading 45 laps of the 50 lap feature. Clanton charged through the field as Jonathan Davenport tried to get around Richards. As the feature reached its mid-point Davenport began to fade as Clanton and Scott Bloomquist hit their stride. Clanton took over second on lap 34 and ten laps later battled past Richards in lapped traffic for the lead.

As the feature drew to a close, Bloomquist found a way around Richards and in the final turn of the final lap, Bloomquist drag-raced Clanton to the finish. It was Clanton by a fender.
