Cody Coughlin Pre-Race News and Notes: North/South SLM Challenge

ARCA/CRA Super Series North/South Super Late Model Challenge No. 1 JEGS.com Toyota Camry News and Notes

The Start

This will be Cody Coughlin’s second Super Late Model start of the 2016 season.

Coughlin, who is racing for Kyle Busch Motorsports in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series this year, has made plenty of starts at the Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, Tennessee. He’s scored a pole at the famed racetrack and has a best finish of second in a Pro Late Model weekly event at the facility.

The North/South Super Late Model Challenge has a unique race format. Coughlin will run a 50-lap race on Friday evening. He must finish in the top 12 to then transfer into Saturday evening’s 75-lap Challenge race, which pits the best of the North vs the best of the South.

Coughlin’s last SLM start came at the Rattler 250 at South Alabama Speedway in March where he finished 30th due to a suspension part failure.

The Driver

Cody Coughlin is a 20 year old development driver for Joe Gibbs Racing. The Delaware, Ohio native will pilot the JEGS.com Super Late Model in approximately 12 more events this year across the Midwest and Southeast states.

“Nashville is one of the most historic tracks we race at, right there with Winchester and Salem, so a win there would be really cool to score.”

New Crew Chief

Cody Coughlin will have a new crew chief atop the pit box in Nashville this weekend. Longtime friend and accomplished Late Model driver Jack Smith will be calling the shots for Coughlin for the first time on Friday night. Smith is joined by Kevin Hamlin (team manager), Scott Wimmer (spotter) and Dave Holt (crew-member).

The Family

Cody is a third-generation race car driver. His family, including his father, John, has been successful in NHRA drag racing for decades. Cody, unlike his family predecessors, chose the path of circle-track racing rather than follow on the straight-line path set forth by the rest of his family. Cody’s mother, Di, and sister, Kennedi, attend Cody’s races in support of their favorite driver.

The Race Track

Fairgrounds Speedway Nashville is a 0.596-mile oval with 18 degrees of banking in the corners. The track was built as a 1.125-mile dirt track in 1904 and was converted to a half-mile paved oval in 1957. It originally featured turns with 35 degrees of banking, but the banking was cut to 18 degrees in 1972. The track was most recently repaved between the 1995 and 1996 seasons.
