Experienced Duo Heads New Porsche Team

Mcconville, Almond Lead New Team into Carrera Cup Battle

Experienced sports car racers Cam McConville and Michael Almond will reunite this season to represent the newly formed Zagame Motorsport in the 2017 Porsche Carrera Cup Australia championship.

The duo were team-mates for the opening three rounds of the 2015 Carrera Cup season and now rekindle the partnership with the new Melbourne based outfit.

For McConville, the road back to the Carrera Cup championship has been a season-and-a-half in the making, in which time he has established Zagame Motorsport, which will compete in several series including Carrera Cup and the feeder Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Australia series.

“I can’t wait to step back into Carrera Cup. I contested three rounds back in 2015, which were thoroughly enjoyable but also a tremendous experience as a driver – the cars were great to drive and the series was incredibly competitive,” said McConville.

McConville made immediate impact in the Porsche championship, placing second in his second ever Carrera Cup appearance at the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix. Now the former Supercars racer hopes to build on this promising start into the 2017 season.

“It’s certainly our aim to be a front-running team from the season’s outset. Both Mike and I have experience around the Clipsal 500 and Albert Park circuits, and Mike returns to Adelaide as a defending race winner. I’m looking forward to the challenge of not only managing Zagame Motorsport into its maiden Carrera Cup season, but also, as a driver, doing my best in what will be an extremely competitive Porsche field.”

Michael Almond will also be looking for Carrera Cup success in 2017. The Adelaide local enters the season in tremendous form, competing door-to-door with Matt Campbell and Alex Davison at last season’s final round in Gold Coast.

Almond also enters his home event having placed second at the Adelaide round last year, which included his maiden Carrera Cup victory in race three.

“Racing in Adelaide is always special, and it’s great to be back alongside Cam and be part of the new Zagame Motorsport operation,” said Almond.

“Last year’s Adelaide round was a highlight of my motor racing career; taking the race win in front of a home crowd. It’s an event I thoroughly enjoy and I hope I can take similar success from this year’s season opener.

“Each season we look at the front end of the Carrera Cup field and say how competitive it is. I don’t think this year is any different; there are some great drivers in this year’s championship, including my team-mate Cam, so the series will again provide some great racing and a real challenge to get to the pointy end. I’m really looking forward to getting the season underway in Adelaide.”

The season opening Clipsal 500 begins next week, with Porsche Carrera Cup Australia to hit the track from Thursday March 02, 2017.
