Tick Tock – Time for Coughlin to Race for a Grandfather Clock

DELAWARE, OH – After nearly a month off, Cody Coughlin is ready to get back behind the wheel; only this time he’ll be doing something he’s accustomed to, short-track racing. The short track ace will head to the famous paperclip of Martinsville Speedway in Virginia for the first time in his career on Saturday, April 1 in the Alpha Energy Solutions 250 for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

The 250-lap battle is Coughlin’s first short track event with the NCWTS and first since making history in 2016 by becoming the only driver to win two Champion Racing Association titles (ARCA/CRA Super Series and JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour) in one year.

Martinsville Speedway is very different from the fast, high-banked half-mile of Winchester Speedway (IN) where Coughlin clinched his historic feat. Martinsville is a flat half-mile with curbs on the inside of each corner, making the facility very treacherous.

Tony Stewart Racing: Donny Schatz World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series California Spring Tour Finale Advance

DONNY SCHATZ
California Outlaw Swing: From Surviving It to Dominating It

INDIANAPOLIS (March 29, 2017) – One sign of a champion is the ability to transform a perceived weakness into a tangible strength. For most of his 20-plus seasons of competing in the World of Outlaws (WoO) Craftsman Sprint Car Series, Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing’s (TSR) Donny Schatz has been classified as a slow starter because he didn’t typically begin piling up victories until late May. That changed two seasons ago when he and his TSR team flipped the script and turned the Outlaws’ annual California Spring Tour from simply being about survival to domination.

Since 2009, Schatz has competed regularly in California early each Outlaw campaign and, the first six of those seasons, he captured two wins in 30 starts. In 2015 and 2016, Schatz has won seven times in 19 starts and already has picked up one victory on California soil this season in three starts. This week, he’ll look to add to those numbers beginning with Wednesday’s Placerville Short Track Outlaw Showdown presented by NAPA Auto Parts. The Kings Outlaw Shootout at Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford Friday and the SoCal Showdown at Perris Auto Speedway Saturday evening caps this year’s six-race run through the Golden State.

Prior to the 2015 WoO campaign, one of the goals for TSR’s No. 15 team was to get better at the places it struggled. Getting through California each March seemed to be one of the tougher tasks of the season. The team went to work after winning the 2014 WoO championship and the results followed.

Cleary and Hodge to be Honored at Thompson’s Icebreaker

THOMPSON, CT – This January, within four days the Northeast Modified racing community lost two pioneers.  Photographer, Howie Hodge, and Modified legend, Leo “The Lion” Cleary, both passed away. At this weekend’s Icebreaker, Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park Officials have announced that they will honor the memory of both men, inviting their families’ as honored guests.

Howie Hodge, who has been a photographer on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, as well as other NASCAR regional touring series, has also frequented the infields of short tracks throughout the country, but most consistently in his home state of Connecticut. For nearly 50 years, Howie shared his passion for motorsports photography with his wife, Mary.  The two were married for 53 years, and spent 50 of those years providing the motorsports community with many memories, memorializing – through photo – some of the sport’s iconic events and moments.

Mary, along with her son, Kevin, will be on hand to honor Howie’s late memory during pre-race ceremonies on Sunday afternoon, April 2. Also, Kevin Hodge will act as the Honorary Starter for the 150-lap NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race.

Darland, Grant and Courtney File Entries for Sunday’s Sumar Classic at Terre Haute

A trio of USAC’s most popular stars are the latest to file their entries for this Sunday’s “Sumar Classic” USAC Silver Crown season opener at western Indiana’s Terre Haute Action Track.

The addition of Dave Darland, Justin Grant and Tyler Courtney to the April 2nd race brings the field to 35 entries in what is expected to be the largest field for the event in nearly two decades.

Lincoln, Indiana’s Darland, a 2008 “Sumar Classic” winner, will join the field for his first ride in the Phillips Motorsports No. 27. Darland has had substantial success with the Phillips’ sprint car in recent years, racking up 17 wins with the team between 2013 and 2015. Darland is one of just six members of the USAC Triple Crown club in which a driver has won the title in each of the club’s three national divisions during their career: Silver Crown, AMSOIL National Sprint and National Midget. Darland is tied for sixth on the all-time Silver Crown win list with 14 victories.

Pensacola, FL — Cole Williams of Borden, Indiana has his sights set on a new challenge in 2017, and that new challenge begins this weekend at Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola, Florida. The 21-year-old Late Model driver has plans to contend for the championship in the track’s competitive Allen Turner Pro Late Model division.

Garage Pass – Vinny Arrenegado

Vinny Arrenegado has a pretty eventful year ahead of him. From his newly purchased Late Model to him and his wife, Jen, expecting a little girl, Vinny has a lot to be thankful for. I was able to meet up with the Warren, RI native to talk a little bit about this upcoming season and his woes of last season; and here’s what he had to say…

How would you describe your 2016 Season?

Vinny: It wasn’t our best year. We started off with bad luck. We broke a sway bar in the first race. We were fast, but we just had bad luck. We had a lot of flats last season. After a wreck we had to put a whole new snout on the car and the next week we came back and won. We sold the car three quarters of the way through the season. I spotted for Belsito at Waterford and ran a few races here in the #5 Advance Auto Parts Late Model for the Gifford Brothers and Wayne Nunes. Then we bought the car that we now have from Ray Parent. Last season was a slump especially after the year before winning the Crab Memorial, the DAV, and a Triple Crown Race.

Vinny will be back in the Late Models this season rolling out in a brand new #17.

Is there anything new to the car for 2017? What are your expectations for this season?

Vinny: Everything. New car, paint scheme, motor…everything. We built it and put it all together ourselves. This season we just want to have patience and we are hoping that will help the wins come our way.

INDYCAR Unveils New Images of 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series Design

INDIANAPOLIS (Wednesday, March 29, 2017) – The design of the car to be used in Verizon IndyCar Series competition in 2018 is coming more into focus.

INDYCAR, sanctioning body for the premier North American open-wheel racing series, released new images today of the universal aerodynamic bodywork kit that will be used by all competitors in 2018. Following along with this year’s INDYCAR theme of “NEXT,” the computer-generated images are the next evolution of the car’s development process and provide more detail than concept sketches released in January.

“While this remains a work in progress, we are encouraged with where the development of the 2018 car stands,” said Jay Frye, INDYCAR president of competition and operations. “The look of the car is bold, the performance data from simulations is meeting targeted goals and safety enhancements built into the design will be substantial.”
