ATQMRA Opener at Mahoning Goes to Sload

Sload Parks it at Mahoning
Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic ATQMRA

Saturday, April 15, 2017, Lehighton, Pa; 2015 ATQMRA Champion Buddy Sload Parked the Colin Martin Spitfire 36 in Victory Lane at the ATQMRA’s season-opening race at Mahoning Valley Speedway. Heat Races were won by Sload and Kris Graver. Dave Gorbatuk was the highest finishing ACRO Engineering Rookie contender. A total of five 2017 rookie contenders were on hand at the opener. Next up for the ATQMRA is Wall Stadium on Saturday, April 29th for wingless racing on that track’s flat inner oval.

The front row of Joey Bailey and Jeff Kot took the green flag and charged into the first turn. Buddy Sload took advantage of his fourth starting position to sweep into the lead to be scored the race leader on lap one. The caution fell for Kyle Taraska on lap 2 when his mount lost power. The restart saw Sload shoot into the lead and open a gap when the race was slowed for the final time on lap 3 by a slowing Joey Payne III who would return to action.

Sload again launched into the lead and ran away and hid as Kris Graver worked his way into second on lap six from his 7th starting spot in the Janisch 48 that won the 2017 ATQMRA Championship. With the speed Graver showed in his heat race he was the odds-on favorite heading into the feature. His fast lap in the heat was nearly 4 tenths faster than the field. When he worked his way into second he set sail to reel Sload in. Graver couldn’t negotiate lapped traffic as efficiently as Sload and would have to settle for second.

Utica-Rome Speedway Set to Open this Sunday, April 23, with Weekly Show in Return to DIRTcar Plus Gladiator Twin 20’s for 360 Sprints

VERNON, NY- It has been seemingly a long offseason since the final checkered flag ended the 2016 season back on October 4, but that will come to an end this coming Sunday, April 23, when Budweiser presents the 56th Season Opener. A huge night is planned with the first ever running of the Gladiator Twin 20’s for the 360 Sprints plus the Gates-Cole Auto Insurance Modifieds, Broedel Energy Crate Sportsman, and Pro Stocks. This Sunday will also be the first event since Utica-Rome Speedway has returned to the DIRTcar ranks.

Always exciting when they visit the half-mile oval that is the Utica-Rome Speedway, the 360 Sprints will compete in the inaugural Gladiator which will be two 20 lap features that will pay $1,500 to win each. At the completion of the two complete programs, the overall point gainer will be named the first ever “Gladiator” and take home the overall Gladiator trophy. A competitive field is expected that should include Cole Cup winner Mark Smith, Super DIRT Week special winner Lucas Wolfe, Chuck Hebing, Kelly Hebing, Billy VanInwegan, Danny Varin, Bobby Varin, Coleman Gulick, Matt Tanner, Dan Douville, Paul Kinney, Cory Sparks, Pete Richardson, Chad Miller, James Hanson, Parker Evans, Jason Barney, Matt Billings, Dave Axton, and more. URC champion Davie Franek has also expressed interest in attending, depending on how the rest of his weekend goes. All 360 Sprint competitors will have the opportunity to pay a $20 Gladiator Challenge fee when they draw for heat race position. All the money raised will go to the highest overall point earner for the two 20 lap main events, as long as they paid the Gladiator Challenge fee. Cole Cup rules will be used for this event.

Matt Sheppard will be looking to collect another Gates-Cole Auto Insurance Modified title, his third consecutive and fourth overall, this season and hopes to use the opener to launch his title defense. Last season, Sheppard had to hold off Larry Wight, Danny Varin, Pat Ward, Rob Bellinger, Marc Johnson, Vic Coffey, Mike Mahaney, Alan Johnson, Matt Hulsizer, and more for the title and many of these drivers are expected to return with title aspirations of their own. Several new faces are expected as well with the return of DIRTcar as well as several of the Open Sportsman competitors that are making the move up. Multi-time Super DIRTcar Series champion and Super DIRT Week winner Billy Decker will compete in the opener as well with the potent Mike Payne owned ride according to the Mike Payne Racing Facebook page.

Billy Pauch, Jr. Wins Season Opening 358 Modified Feature at New Egypt Speedway

New Egypt, NJ (April 16, 2017) – At New Egypt Speedway’s season opener presented by Oliver Communications Group, Billy Pauch, Jr. was the victor in the 358 Modified feature. Ryan Godown scored the win in the Northeast Wingless Sprint Car main event. The Hammer Sportsman feature went to Billy Osmun, III. David Burns topped the competition in the Lyons Construction/Metal Fab Rookie race.

When the 30-lap 358 Modified feature got underway, Andrew Bohn sped to the front with David Van Horn, Chad Barney, Billy Pauch, Jr. and Kevin Vaclavicek in pursuit. Following an opening lap caution period and restart, Pauch Jr. drove into the runner-up position and began to track down Bohn. On the fourth circuit, Pauch, Jr. slipped by Bohn to gain the lead. With a clear track, Pauch began to pull away until the yellow flag appeared on lap seven for Chris Grbac. On the ensuing restart, Van Horn worked his way by Bohn just before a multi-car incident took place in the fourth corner. When action resumed again, Pauch, Jr. and Van Horn remained in the top two positions with Ryan Godown taking third from Bohn. The final caution period of the contest took place on the eleventh tour as Danny Bouc’s car veered into the outside wall in the first turn. When the green flag waved, Pauch, Jr. fended off Van Horn with Godown, Barney and John McClelland next in tow. At the halfway point, Pauch, Jr. was stretching out his advantage as Van Horn and Godown were dicing for second place and a battle for fourth was brewing between Barney and McClelland. On lap twenty, Pauch, Jr. began to encounter lap traffic. With five circuits remaining and in heavier traffic, Pauch, Jr. was still in top with Van Horn nudging closer. As the two to go signal was given, the third place running Godown began a final surge towards the top and closed in on Van Horn. When the checkered flag waved, Pauch, Jr. was in front to collect the opening night win with Van Horn holding off Godown for second. The Barney and McClelland duel went down to the wire with Barney taking fourth place. Lou Cicconi and Ryan Godown won the 358 Modified qualifying races.

In the 20-lap Northeast Wingless Sprint Car main event, Ryan Godown took the lead from Wayne Weaver on the fourth tour and led the remainder of the event. Weaver, who led the opening three circuits, finished in second place. Lee Nardelli came home in third. Lou Cicconi and Bobby Butler rounded out the top five. The Northeast Wingless Sprint Car heats were taken by Lee Nardelli and Ryan Godown.

Kyle Weiss Wins 35-lap TP Trailers NASCAR Modified Feature Worth More Than $3500 at Grandview on Saturday Night; Brian Shuey Tops in BRC Late Models and Ryan Lilick Tops in Sportsman

BECHTELSVILLE, PA. April 16, 2017 . . . Kyle Weiss, Brian Shuey and Ryan Lilick didn’t fare well in their outings during opening night racing at Grandview Speedway last Saturday night.

In their second showing of the season all three more than made up for it as they all ended their night in victory lane in their respective division on Checkered Flag Fan Club Night.

NASCAR T.P. Trailers 358 Modified action saw Kyle Weiss inherit the lead from race leader Danny Erb on the 25th lap of the 35-lap main event when mechanical problems forced Erb to the sidelines. Weiss, who dedicated the win to promoter Bruce Rogers, who recently passed away, commented that Erb, “had the right line and the field covered,” before he broke.

Windom Turns the Tide, Tames Boespflug to Take Tri-state’s Spring Showdown

Haubstadt, Indiana — One night after victory slipped through his fingers and into the hands of Chad Boespflug during a spectacular late-race duel at Bloomington (Ind.) Speedway, Chris Windom wouldn’t let opportunity escape his grasp once again in Saturday night’s “Spring Showdown” at Tri-State Speedway, co-sanctioned by USAC and MSCS.

However, an average finish of 12th over 13 career USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car starts at Tri-State didn’t bode well for Windom’s odds coming into the event at the quarter-mile paperclip in southern Indiana.

But stats are just that. Stats. They are simply numbers that tell of what has occurred in the past, but are not the be-all, end-all figurative crystal ball that foretells what the future holds.

Brian Bell is the 2017 King of the Wings at Jackson Motor Speedway

BYRAM, Miss. (April 15, 2017) Making it a perfect weekend at the Jackson Motor Speedway, Tennessee’s Brian Bell is the undisputed 2017 King of the Wings with the Lucas Oil ASCS Southern Outlaw Sprints and the Griffith Truck and Equipment ASCS Gulf South Region.

Gridding the A-Feature fourth on Saturday night, the FSR Radiators No. 23b advanced to the lead on the ninth circuit. Taking the top spot from the No. 26 of Marshall Skinner, the Marion, Arkansas driver battled back to reclaim the point on Lap 17. Working the back markers, it was traffic negotiation that would be Skinner’s undoing. Getting caught behind a slower machine on Lap 21, Bell split the difference and advanced to the lead and the win.

Skinner would have to setting for the runner-up spot with Tim Crawley advancing from seventh to complete the night’s podium. Derek Hagar was fourth after starting second with Zach Pringle rounding out the top-five.

Peltier Edges Rowe for 4th Easter Bunny 150 Triumph at Hickory

HICKORY, NC (April 15) – Preston Peltier survived a three lap scramble to the checkered flag to edge out Ben Rowe for his fourth Easter Bunny 150 win Saturday night at Hickory Motor Speedway. Peltier’s seventh win at Hickory and 15th overall Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Model win ended a two-year winless drought dating back to the 2015 Easter Bunny 150.

“Three to go when that last caution came out, I thought, oh man, here we go again,” said Peltier, driver of the Roger Newton Concrete Finishing Chevrolet #33. “My tires really weren’t the best there at the end, but I’ve got to thank Ben [Rowe] because he really could have used me up. It’s funny how life works out and right now, life’s pretty good.”

In qualifying, Peltier just beat out Kyle Busch with a lap of 14.752 seconds (88.584 MPH) for his 21st career quick qualifying time in PASS. After the top 10 qualifiers redraw, Peltier would move back to the sixth starting position, while Raphael Lessard and Derek Griffith would move up to the front row.
