Drown, Weaver, Valenti Get Dominating Wins at Attica

ATTICA, Ohio – Once in the lead, Doug Drown pulled away for a convincing late model victory on Bazell Race Fuels Night at Attica Raceway Park. Paul Weaver would also dominate in the 305 sprint feature while Shawn Valenti scored a half track victory in the dirt trucks as well.

In the Summit Racing Equipment UMP Late Model feature Drown, who rolled off 11th on the starting grid, battled Rusty Schlenk for several laps mid-way through before taking the lead on lap 16 and then pulled away the remaining laps for his second win of the season. Ironically, the victory ties Drown with Schlenk for the top spot in all-time wins in the division at Attica, each with 22 checkers.

“It was a heck of a race between two of the best here when you go off the wins. It was fun racing with him (Schlenk) like that. I kept seeing him there and knew I wasn’t pulling away really and the lapped traffic I got lucky and picked them off. It was a heck of a battle. I don’t think I’ve been up on the wheel like that going in and out of traffic and racing for position. Hats off to the guys…Cody has a new set-up on tonight. I was a little disappointed on my end last Mrs. Burns calls it ‘a half bubble off’ …we weren’t half a bubble off tonight. I also want to thank Keith Berner and Brent for giving me a heck of a shock package,” said Drown beside his Hall’s Auto Sales, Efco Power Equipment, ABR Farms, Kar Connection, Malcuit Racing Engines, Hoosier Tires-backed machine.

“What They’re Saying” from Friday Practice at Honda Indy Grand Prix of Alabama

SIMON PAGENAUD (No. 1 Menards Team Penske Chevrolet): “It was a good day for the Menards Chevrolet team. We were able to get a lot of laps in and collect some good data. The car felt good. I think we’re in a good place in terms of speed and balance. This track can be a little tricky and it’s really important to get that balance. Everyone tested here not that long ago, so the cars are pretty dialed in. This is just a fun track to drive.”

JOSEF NEWGARDEN (No. 2 Fitzgerald Glider Kits Team Penske Chevrolet): “I really enjoy racing here at Barber. I feel pretty good at where the Fitzgerald Glider Kits Chevy is right now. On the speed side, we were a tick quicker in the first practice, but we were experimenting a little in the afternoon session. The warmer track this afternoon made it a little slick, but that’s not always a bad thing. It’s supposed to be warm again tomorrow and we’ll see what Sunday brings. But for qualifying tomorrow, if it doesn’t rain, should be pretty similar to today. Qualifying will be as important as it always is and we are in a good position to get a good starting spot for Sunday’s race.”

HELIO CASTRONEVES (No. 3 AAA Insurance Team Penske Chevrolet): “This track, it’s very challenging in the setup, obviously Firestone has been doing a very good job changing a little bit of the compound or the construction, and it seemed to suit our setup on the No. 3 AAA Chevy. We keep chasing all the areas, so it’s not only straight, brake and turn, you have a lot of technical corners here that are becoming very difficult, so it makes a big difference when you have a good setup.”

Dan Wesson Aims for SK Light Title

Stafford Springs, CT — In just two seasons, Monson, MA native Dan Wesson has quickly established himself as one of the drivers to watch in Stafford Speedway’s SK Light division.  Wesson graduated from the Wild Thing Karts in 2015 where he scored over 40 total feature wins and a championship in the Junior Outlaw division. He quickly showed that he could carry his winning ways over to the SK Light division with 3 feature wins during his rookie season.  The 2016 season saw him score 5 SK Light feature wins behind the wheel of his #92 Competitive Edge Coatings machine, second only to Tony Membrino, Jr.’s 7 wins.  Despite missing 4 races last season, Wesson finished 7th in the points standings and is ready to be a championship contender in his third season of SK Light competition.

“We have a great car again and a great team,” said Wesson.  “I have great support from my sponsors Monaco Ford, Ceric Fabrication, Patriot Coatings, Trackside Motors, Smith Auto Body, Jericho Transmissions, and Competitive Edge Coatings and if everything goes our way I think we have a good chance of repeating our performance from last year and being contenders for the championship.  The championship is what everyone is shooting for but if we can get a lot of wins this year and win the championship, that would be our ultimate goal.”

Wesson isn’t just an up and coming ace behind the wheel of a modified race car, he is also an accomplished air rifle shooter at his high school, Wilbraham & Monson Academy.  Wesson’s air rifle duties took him away from the track for several races last season but Wesson says he has no regrets about missing the races, which cost him a chance to be among the championship contenders.

Ed Flemke, Jr. and Paula Bouchard Named NAPA Spring Sizzler® Grand Marshals

Stafford Springs, CT — Stafford Motor Speedway has announced that Ed Flemke, Jr. and his sister Paula Bouchard will serve as Grand Marshals of the 46th Annual NAPA Auto Parts Spring Sizzler®, April 29-30.  Flemke and his sister will give the command to send the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour field of cars on their way to the green flag in “The Greatest Race in the History of Spring.”

“This will be the first time for me being a grand marshal and it will be quite an honor,” said Flemke.  “I remember going back to the very first Sizzler, my father was really excited about the race because he thought it was a good combination of being a great spectator race as well as being a great drivers race.  That race has always had momentum behind it and it’s always cool to have a big race at the start of the season.  The Spring Sizzler is just like the Daytona 500.”

The 2017 season marks the 50th season since Stafford Speedway was first paved, ushering in the era of asphalt racing.  The winner of the very first feature to be run at Stafford on the new coat of asphalt was Ed Flemke, Sr. on June 1, 1967.  The win was also the first of 23 career modified wins at Stafford for Flemke.  Flemke also nearly won the very first Spring Sizzler® in 1972 driving the #34 Pinto for owner Fred Vigliarolo but after leading the race from lap 7 to lap 70, a water pump failed on Flemke’s car and he ended up finishing 17th while Fred DeSarro ended up taking the checkered flag in the Len Boehler “Ole Blue” #3 machine.  Flemke was one of 7 Pintos in the starting lineup of 33 cars that marked the beginning of the Pinto Revolution at Stafford.  Flemke then came back the very next year in 1973 and won the Spring Sizzler® driving Bob Judkins’ #2x.

Justin Bonsignore Seeking First Stafford Win in NAPA Spring Sizzler®

Stafford Springs, CT — When it comes to NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour racing at Stafford Motor Speedway, Long Island native Justin Bonsignore will be the first to admit that Stafford hasn’t been one of his better tracks.  Bonsignore has racked up 9 top-5 and 16 top-10 finishes in 28 career NWMT starts at Stafford in addition to one career pole position coming at the 2011 NAPA Fall Final but is still in search of that elusive first career Stafford win.

“I’m really excited to get back to Stafford,” said Bonsignore.  “On one hand it hasn’t been my best or easiest tracks for results, but we had a lot of speed at Stafford last time out for the Fall Final and we had a freak issue with the kill switch take us out of contention.  We’re hoping we can carry over our speed from the Fall Final to the Sizzler.  We sure hope we can get our first win in the Sizzler.  If I were to ever get that first win at Stafford, what better race to get it at than the Sizzler?  It’s the biggest race of the year at Stafford so to get our first win at the Sizzler would mean a little more and it would be nice to drink the milk in victory lane.”

If Bonsignore needs inspiration, he needs to look no further back than the NAPA Fall Final last season.  Bonsignore and the #51 Phoenix Communications team won at New Hampshire last September and he followed that win up with a 4th place finish in the Fall Final.

Ryan Preece Looking to Complete Career Quartet in NAPA Spring Sizzler®

Stafford Springs, CT — After spending the 2016 season behind the wheel of Johnny Davis Motorsports’ #01 car in the NASCAR Xfinity Series, Ryan Preece has returned to full-time competition on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour for the 2017 season.  The Berlin native will pilot Ed Partridge’s #6 T.S. Haulers machine and is looking to capture the NAPA Spring Sizzler® to complete what would be a career Stafford quartet of checkered flags.  Preece has already won the late May/Early June, August, and NAPA Fall Final events during his NWMT career, all that remains is to win the grand-daddy of them all, “The Greatest Race in the History of Spring” the NAPA Auto Parts Spring Sizzler®.

“A Sizzler win would definitely be nice,” said Preece.  “I’ve had moments where I’ve led the most of the race but we’ve been unable to win it.  I’ve won the Fall Final, the late May/early June race, as well as the August race at Stafford, so the Sizzler is the only Stafford tour race left that I haven’t won.  To finally get a win and add a Sizzler trophy to the others would be pretty special.”

With 5 career NWMT wins and 25 career SK Modified® wins at Stafford to his credit, Preece knows how to get to NAPA Victory Lane behind the wheel of a modified.  With the NAPA Spring Sizzler® being 200-laps in length, the strategy game could determine who ends up winning the 46thedition of the NAPA Spring Sizzler®.  A new tire rule for the 2017 season, which will allow NWMT teams to change 4 tires rather than the customary 3 during a pit stop combined with the fact that most teams will also have to pit for fuel at some point during the race already has Preece and other NWMT teams already plotting out a strategy for the race.

THOMPSON, CT – Going into its third season, the Third Annual Icebreaker, Road Race Style (IBRRS) will be coming to Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park (TSMP) tomorrow, April 22. As part of this event, two defending champions are entered, who will be putting their past success to the test against some familiar faces and some new competition.

Payson was the 2015 Icebreaker, Road Race Style STL Class Champion, picking up the win in his No. 95 Hoosier Racing Tire/MAZDA/ sponsored Miata during the inaugural event in 2015. When asked about his victory, Payson said, “It was a good race – a lot of fun.  I was surprised because I was out there having a good time and then all of a sudden I got a huge trophy. Nobody said anything, so it was unexpected but enjoyable.”

This year, Payson will be racing in the T4 Class (Touring 4 SCCA) in the same car. When asked about his strategy and adjustments for this year, he responded “A little luck and conditioning. I have been racing for over 48 years. Being a former SCCA National Champion and a Pro champion, I have a good idea what to do with a lot of races under my belt. NIXA, Mo. (April 21, 2017) – Kyle Bellm and the Resource Asset Management Solutions (RAMS) No. 14k Sprint Car team picked up some strong momentum by racing to a solid fifth-place Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour finish atop Sedalia’s ½-mile Missouri State Fairgrounds clay oval last Saturday afternoon.

With inclement weather already nixing this weekend’s Air Capital Shootout at Wichita’s 81 Speedway, Bellm and the PPG Automotive Finishes/Colorvision team will take on the ASCS Warrior Region at Moberly’s Randolph County Raceway on Saturday night.

Last Saturday’s card at Sedalia started in unusual fashion with Bellm drawing a low number to start on the pole of the day’s first heat race.  Bellm took full advantage by picking up the heat race win aboard the VP Racing Fuels/Schure Built Suspensions mount to earn a spot in the redraw.
