Not Your Average Racer; Tanner Swanson Embraces His Racing Role

In Major League baseball, a player who steps up to the plate and gets a base hit one out of every three at-bats year-after-year is celebrated as one of the top players in the game and a potential hall-of-famer.

What would you say, then, about a driver who straps himself into a USAC Silver Crown car maybe three or four times per year and wins more than half of those starts, on average?

Then again, Tanner Swanson isn’t your average racer.

Gilliland Selected as Number-One Pick in Short Track Draft

Concord, N.C. — Each year, NFL Draft experts take their best shot at predicting the order in which names will be called onto the stage in Philadelphia. On some occasions, there is a consensus number-one pick. On other occasions, you might as well just draw straws out of a hat. The same can be said for the Short Track Draft presented by PFC Brakes on

For most experts, the 2017 Short Track Draft came down to three or four drivers who they thought would be the number-one selection. In all, 14 different drivers received first-place votes from our panel of 65 industry insiders, but when all the votes were tallied one driver stood tall as the number-one pick.

The driver is the second in his family to be selected in the Short Track Draft. His father, David, was selected as the 12th pick in 2005 before beginning a career in the top levels of NASCAR.

Holden, Everard, Grant Lead VIR Practice

Alton, VA – Zach Holden, Reece Everard and David Grant led the first practice sessions of the 2017 F1600, F2000 and Atlantic seasons, respectively, at VIR on Thursday.

After 30 minutes of green flag track time, it was Zach Holden with the fastest free practice lap for F1600 Championship Series competitors in the first session of the 21-race, seven-weekend 2017 season held on Thursday afternoon at VIRginia International Raceway.

Holden’s best lap of 2:00.813 set the mark ahead of both of his K-Hill Motorsports teammates, Yuven Sundaramoorthy and Lance Fenderson, who like Holden, are making their pro Series debuts this weekend in the USAC-sanctioned F1600 Championship organized by Formula Race Promotions.

Holden started on a local level, karting in 2007 and amassing multiple Championships around the way; and most recently competing in Rotax karts.

The drivers are benefiting from recent running at VIR as the team took part in a regional event at the track earlier in the month, with Holden taking a victory.

With three K-Hill cars in the top three spots after the first practice session, the team is putting together a solid title defense with 2016 Champion, Neil Verhagen, off to RedBull’s Formula Renault program in Europe.

New Date, Added Excitement for PASS Beech Ridge 300 this Weekend

NAPLES, ME (April 27) – Moving from the Fall to its new date now in April, one of New England’s biggest race weekends is in store for competitors and race fans alike.  The Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Super Late Models and PASS Modifieds head to Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, ME, once again this Saturday afternoon to bring together some of the best drivers from the Northeast and Canada.  Adding to the importance of this big day of racing, the Beech Ridge 300 will be the fifth race of the PASS National Championship season and the final chance to accrue important points prior to the next national event, the 44th Annual Oxford 250 at Oxford Plains Speedway in August.

For Jay, ME’s, Dave Farrington, Jr., Beech Ridge Motor Speedway holds a special place in his heart.  The Kulwicki Driver Development Program graduate captured the track championship at Beech Ridge in 2014.  Now, sitting fifth in the PASS National Championship race, Farrington believes he has his best chance yet to capture his first PASS win and make up ground in the title chase.

“I love the track there, we’ve always had a good car at Beech Ridge, from 2013 up through last year,” says Farrington. “Obviously, we were the 2014 champion without winning a race and that means something for us, we won two races there last year and probably should have won the PASS 300 a couple of years ago.  We definitely feel every time we go there that we’ve got a chance to win.”
