Making History – Cody Coughlin the First to Win Dual CRA Championships

WINCHESTER, IN – Cody Coughlin has made history. The Joe Gibbs Racing Development driver is the first to win both Champion Racing Associations Late Model touring series championships in a single season.

With a fifth-place finish in Sunday’s Winchester 400 in Indiana, Coughlin clinched the 2016 ARCA/CRA Super Series championship. Friday he dominated the JEGS / CRA All-Stars Tour event until mechanical woes end the night early. He has built up a sufficient cushion in the standings that the minor bump in the road has no outcome in the final results and his second Tour title in that particular series.

Sunday’s race was the most difficult of Coughlin’s season. The already challenging Winchester 400 event became even more challenging after Coughlin slapped the turn four wall near the halfway mark of the marathon race. His Toyota Camry suffered enough damage to make the car hard to drive, but Coughlin never gave up.

Championship Lead Extended After Hard-Fought Battle at the “Big O”

OVID, MI – One of Elton John’s biggest hits was a song called “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting.” That could have been the mantra for Cody Coughlin on Saturday night as he fought hard despite mechanical issues to score a top 10 finish in the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour 100-lap feature at Michigan’s Owosso Speedway.

Coughlin started second and led close to 50 laps, but in the second half of the race he had to deal with an engine that was down on power and a broken front spring.

Even while other cars may have been faster than Coughlin in the closing laps, he was able to bring his number-1 Toyota Camry to a seventh-place finish. The top-10 run also increased his points lead as his nearest competitors in the standings all finished behind him.

Coughlin’s Race for History Rolls on With Winchester Double-Header

DELAWARE, OHIO – Cody Coughlin’s run at history is inching closer to the finish. Three ARCA/CRA Super Series races remain. Four JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour races are left. Both divisions race this weekend at one of Coughlin’s favorite places to race: Winchester Speedway.

Coughlin’s Labor Day Weekend double-header kicks off on Sunday with a 100-lap showdown for the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour in the Pro Late Model. It will conclude with a 100-lap battle in the heat on Labor Day Monday for the ARCA/CRA Super Series.

“I love racing at Winchester, so two races this weekend should be a lot of fun,” Coughlin said. “Winchester is fast and high-banked and that’s what I enjoy. I’m excited to run twice this weekend there and get even closer to the championships for both series.”

Coughlin Scores Another Top 10, Extends Points Lead at Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, MI – Cody Coughlin fought hard in Wednesday night’s Kalamazoo Klash 125 for the ARCA/CRA Super Series at Kalamazoo Speedway. He battled in traffic throughout the race and came home sixth in his inaugural start at the fast and challenging 3/8-mile Michigan oval.

Coughlin qualified seventh and started third after an invert of nine. He ran in the top five for much of the race, and was at one point as high as second.

However, with under 50 laps to go, Coughlin was hit from behind and moved out of the racing groove. The 20-year-old Joe Gibbs Racing Development driver went for a slide, but kept his Toyota Camry from going for a spin. When Coughlin regrouped, he found himself in sixth.

Coughlin Keeps Points Lead After Redbud 300

ANDERSON, IN – When Cody Coughlin left Indiana’s Anderson Speedway in May, he left a winner, and now, despite a race that ended early for the 20-year-old, he is still the ARCA/CRA Super Series point leader. Coughlin will head to Indianapolis on Friday night on top of the standings after an early race parts failure resulted in a 19th-place finish for the No. 1 Toyota Camry.

The day started off about as well as it possibly could for Coughlin and his Team JEGS crew. They were near the top of the board in practice, they qualified second and ran in the top five for much of the early part of the 300-lap affair.

During a restart on lap 54, the Ohio native and another driver bounced off of each other numerous times on the first lap after the restart. During the confrontation, the driveline broke on his Super Late Model. As a result, Coughlin’s car spun to bring out a caution.

Four Races in Seven Days up Next for CRA Points Leader Coughlin

COLUMBUS, OH – Cody Coughlin is about to begin one of the busiest weeks of his racing career.  Four races in seven days.  That’s something a dirt driver would do.  Coincidentally, the Joe Gibbs Racing Development driver will be hitting the dirt for one of those races, but first, it all begins at Indiana’s bullring of Anderson Speedway for the Redbud 300 on Saturday, July 16.  Ironically, the busy week will end at Anderson a week later for the 100-lap JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour event onJuly 23.

In between the two races at Anderson is the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Aspen Dental Eldora Dirt Derby at Ohio’s Eldora Speedway on Wednesday, July 20, and the ARCA/CRA Super Series 100 at Lucas Oil Raceway in Indianapolis on Friday, July 22.
“This is going to be crazy, but also a ton of fun,” said the 20 year-old Coughlin.  “I’ve never done anything like this with so many races in such a short period of time.  I’ve also never raced on dirt before, so that race at Eldora is going to be interesting, but I’m looking forward to it.”

Reigning NASCAR Truck Series Champion, Erik Jones, to Run a Handful of Late Model Races with KBR Development

Holland, MI (February 4, 2016) KBR Development announced today that 2015 NASCAR Truck Series Champion, Erik Jones, will be behind the wheel of one of their Template Super Late Models in 2016. Jones, who is coming off a phenomenal 2015 season will be piloting a Super Late Model housed by KBR for an undisclosed number of events in conjunction with his NASCAR Xfinity schedule.

Jones is no stranger to working with KBR Development owners Mike Bursley and Zach Dunson. The trio teamed up in 2015 at the Battle @ Berlin 251. An event that Jones went on to win with Bursley and Dunson filling the roles as crew chief and car chief respectively. The Battle @ Berlin 251 win along with the Redbud 300 and Winchester 400 allowed Jones to be the first driver to ever capture the JEGS/CRA $100,000 Super Late Model Triple Crown.

“I just love racing late models, so anytime I get an opportunity to race one it’s hard to say no.” Jones stated. “I currently have some dates open on the schedule that will allow me to participate in some late model events. The success Bursley, Dunson, and myself had working together last year along with the program these guys have put together will make us hard to beat. I’m very confident about our partnership and am looking forward to getting to the racetrack with them.”

Winchester 100 News and Notes

Back to Defend His Win

A year ago Cody Coughlin scored one of the biggest wins of his career when he led all 100 laps to take the checkered flag in the ARCA/CRA Super Series Winchester 100 at the World Stock Car Festival on Labor Day.  Now he’s heading back to take on the 37 degrees of banking at Winchester to defend his win.
Winchester Success
Coughlin said he’s feeling no pressure heading into Winchester, and for good reason.  Winchester Speedway is one of his best race tracks.  In addition to the win one year ago, the 19-year-old has finished in the top-10 three times.  Coughlin has never finished lower than seventh at Winchester in a Super Late Model.  He’s also finished second at Winchester in a Pro Late Model and scored another top-10 finish in his lone ARCA Racing Series start at Winchester in 2014.

Cody Coughlin I-44 Masters of the Pros Fact Sheet

No. 1 Toyota
JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour
Mercy Masters of the Pros 144 News and Notes

The Champ is Back

When the 2013 JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour champion heads back to a race, people take notice. It’s been a while since Cody Coughlin has run a JEGS All Stars Tour race, but he’s back for the first time this year. Coughlin ran just two races in this series in 2014, scoring top-ten finishes in both. A fourth-place run at Columbus Motor Speedway was his best of the two events.

Coughlin Wants That Green Jacket

The winner of the Mercy Masters of the Pros 144 receives a beautiful green jacket, just like the champion of The Masters at Augusta National in Georgia. Coughlin, an avid golfer, would love to score himself one of those jackets.

“That would be awesome to win the green jacket,” exclaimed Coughlin. “I really enjoy golfing during my downtime and Augusta National Golf Course (home of The Masters) is one course I hope to play someday. To win something like that in an auto race, and be part of a small group of drivers to win it, would be incredible.”

Practice Makes Perfect

Coughlin flew from his home state of Ohio down to North Carolina for pit stop practice this past Tuesday. He participated in practice with both Joe Gibbs Racing and Michael Waltrip Racing throughout the day. He drove a Sprint Cup car at JGR and a Truck at MWR. Coughlin was thrilled by the end of the day as he felt he learned a lot that will help him out as he prepares for his debut in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series.

Rain, Rain, Go Away

The Mercy Masters of the Pros 144 was originally scheduled to be run on May 30, but it was rained out. That’s not the only time that has happened to Coughlin this year. He was fast in practice this past Saturday at his home track of Columbus Motor Speedway before the ARCA/CRA Super Series Bud St. Amant Memorial 125 was rained out. Hopefully that won’t happen this weekend as Coughlin pursues a win at Lebanon I-44 Speedway.

Second Verse Same as the First for Cody Coughlin at Lebanon I-44 Speedway

(Delaware, OHIO – July 1, 2015) – “Second verse. Same as the first…” Those are some lyrics to the old Herman’s Hermits song, “I’m Henry VIII I am” from 1965. 19-year-old Cody Coughlin has probably never heard that song, but it accurately describes the weekend that’s right in front of him.

The Delaware, Ohio native is headed back to I-44 Speedway in Lebanon, Missouri for the Mercy Masters of the Pros 144 JEGS All-Stars Tour race that was originally supposed to be held on May 30.

Instead, the race is now on Independence Day, this Saturday night, July 4. Coughlin is hoping to have fireworks exploding above him as he dons the green jacket that’s awarded to the winners. And he especially wants that jacket, since Coughlin is a huge fan of golf.

JGR Development Driver Cody Coughlin Turns Heads at Berlin

MARNE, MICHIGAN (May 17, 2015) — If you were not at Berlin Raceway in Marne, Michigan on Saturday night, you missed an impressive performance.  Track announcers hailed the run of 19 year-old Cody Coughlin as he marched from a 23rd starting spot and into contention for victory at the closing stages of the Berlin 125 for the ARCA / CRA Super Series.

The Joe Gibbs Development driver proved that you can overcome adversity throughout the day.  Berlin had been a sore-spot to Coughlin in the few times he has raced their in his young career.  After qualifying it did not get any better for Team JEGS.  Coughlin timed in eighth quick, but crew chief Nick Easton pulled the car out of the impounded area to help improve the car for the main event.  By doing so, Coughlin was relegated to start at the rear of the field.

Methodically Coughlin picked his way through the field and under the direction of spotter Scott Wimmer, Coughlin moved his way into the top 15 by lap 21, then top 10 on lap 33 and eventually the top five.  Coughlin did not settle; he was pushing for third when another driver snuck by him in the battle and the Delaware, Ohio native wound up fifth as the checkered flag fell.

Cody Coughlin Ready to Challenge Anderson’s High Banks

DELAWARE, OHIO – (April 21, 2015) — The high banks of Anderson Speedway in Anderson, Indiana can be challenging and fun at the same time for any driver. It is one of the tracks that Cody Coughlin looks forward to competing at every year. In fact, he made his Super Late Model debut at the high-banked, quarter-mile oval in 2013.

This Saturday, April 25th, the Joe Gibbs Racing Development driver will return to Anderson Speedway and compete in the ARCA/CRA Super Series powered by JEGS 125-lap event.

“I am eager to return to Anderson Speedway,” exclaimed Coughlin. “That is one of the most fun places to race, I think, as far from a driver’s standpoint. It is a great short, high-banked track.”

Admirable Performance by JGR Development Driver Coughlin Despite Scratched Cornea

DELAWARE, OHIO — (April 13, 2015) — For much of the early stages of Saturday’s ARCA/CRA Super Series season-opening event at Ohio’s Toledo Speedway, the stout field of drivers were all following the leader of the pack; Cody Coughlin. Coughlin started on the pole position in the 7-Up 100 and powered his way into a comfortable lead in the opening laps in his JEGS number-one Toyota. And he did it all with a scratched cornea that he suffered in his left eye prior to the green flag.

Despite the irritation, the 19-year-old Joe Gibbs Racing development driver was the Pied Piper of the field for nearly 30 laps. As the circuits clicked off in the caution-free event, Coughlin eventually was passed for the top spot. Just as spotter Scott Wimmer suggested over the team radio, Coughlin rode in the leader’s tire tracks just waiting for his opportunity to pounce.

As the race fell into its 100-lap green flag run, Coughlin’s machine turned to the loose side. Coughlin battled hard for position in the top five as he weaved in and out of lapped traffic. Still, the driver kept fighting, knowing that there would still be an opportunity to race for the win if a caution flag flew in the race’s later stages.
