CONCORD, NC – Jan. 5, 2018 – When race fans make their annual visit to Central Florida in early February to kick off another race season, at first glance they may notice a new look to the storied facility which is home to the 47th annual DIRTcar Nationals, but that isn’t out of the ordinary at a speedway that has undergone numerous transformations throughout its 50 years of existence. When the gates swing open at Volusia Speedway Park for DIRTcar Nationals on the first Tuesday in February, the 2018 racing season will officially begin, and the World’s Fastest Half Mile will pop the top on the tracks 50th year of racing.

“There are not many marquee events that you can count on,” said retired NASCAR driver and dirt racing enthusiast Kenny Wallace. “You’ve got Eldora, Knoxville, World Finals – but DIRTcar Nationals is one-, two-week marquee event that you can count on. CONCORD, N.C. – March 2, 2017 – Starting with the first events of 2017, any participants of a DIRTcar-sanctioned event will be required to hold a DIRTcar Racing membership. Any division without a 100 percent membership participation will be at risk of violating the sanction agreement and suspension of the sanction by DIRTcar Racing.

DIRTcar Nationals Night Eight Recap

Sheppard Reels in Shirley for a Gator Trophy
BARBERVILLE, FL- February 22, 2017- Brandon Sheppard fought his way to Victory Lane during night eight of the 46th annual DIRTcar Nationals in the 30-lap DIRTcar Racing Late Model Feature. It wasn’t an easy path for Sheppard to get to the front of the pack as Brian Shirley tried to fend him off any way possible.
Sheppard started in the fourth position but found his way to second within the first 10 laps. He passed Shane Clanton, who started the feature third, early on and then had to duel with Tyler Erb. Sheppard then began reeling in Shirley and was at his door knocking by lap 10. They ran side-by-side and the lead position was juggled between the No. 1 and No. 3 machines for several laps. Sheppard finally made the pass on lap 13 but Shirley didn’t surrender as they continued to run side-by-side.
“One of the things I’ve struggled with here a lot is knowing where I need to be on the track,” said Sheppard. “Mark [Richards] talked to me a bunch before we went out for that race and he was giving me pointers on where I need to pick up speed, and where I need to be out of the gas, and how to keep my momentum up… I feel like I learned a lot for later in the week.”

Madden steadily gained ground on pole sitter and race leader Brian Shirley who had made a significant breakaway from the rest of the field early in the race. With the help of a restart, Madden was able to make a pass on the high-side of Brian Shirley on lap 13 to claim the lead.

“We got a good restart and then we were able to get out in the clean air and we had a pretty good car tonight,” said Chris Madden. “It was too tight the first 10 or so laps but overall we had a great race car. I’m going to take this [Gator] home to my little man, Avery.”

Brad Sweet Claims Big Gator for Kasey Kahne Racing

Brian Ruhlman wins his first ever DIRTcar Nationals feature

BARBERVILLE, Fla. – Feb. 14, 2016 -Brad Sweet continued his DIRTcar Nationals dominance Sunday night as he scored his second World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series feature victory of the season and claimed the coveted ‘Big Gator’ trophy by winning the Sprint Week championship.

Joey Saldana led the field to the green flag in the 30-lap feature at Volusia Speedway Park but it was Kasey Kahne Racing’s Sweet who dominated much of the night. Sweet battled past Saldana for the lead on a lap 10 restart and even with a late race challenge from Lucas Wolfe, remained out front for the succeeding 20 laps.

“It’s unbelievable,” Sweet said. “The competition is so stiff that you have to put yourself in position each and every time you’re on the race track and it’s not easy, one mistake and you’re behind the eight ball. Tonight we did pretty much everything right, and luckily the dash draw helped us there because it was going to be a tough track to pass on.”

Sweet, who won the season opening series event at Volusia Speedway Park on Friday night, edged Greg Hodnett, who had been the picture of consistency all week, by just four points to win the ‘Big Gator.’ With Daryn Pittman’s 2015 Sprint Week championship, it is the second year in a row Kasey Kahne Racing with Mike Curb has claimed the ‘Big Gator’ trophy.
