Jon McKennedy Looking to go Back 2 Back at Stafford

Stafford Springs, CT — When the Exit Realty Modified Touring Series comes to Stafford Speedway this Friday, July 21st for the Lincoln Tech 100, Jon McKennedy will be looking to make it back to back victories at the Connecticut half-mile.  McKennedy won the first ever appearance for the new series at Stafford back in June with a drive that saw him have to come from the back to the front several different times.  McKennedy only led 4 laps in the race, but they were the most important laps, the final 4 laps of the race.  A victory for McKennedy would be two in a row in the MTS and it would be his third consecutive touring series victory at Stafford as he won the VMRS 80 at Stafford last September.

“I feel good,” said McKennedy.  “Stafford has been a pretty good track for me the past couple of years and we’ve won the last 2 times we’ve been to Stafford with the MRS and the MTS against a strong group of competitors.  I think we have a real good chance on Friday.  It’s a long race at 100 laps so we just have to stay out of trouble and put ourselves into position for the end of the race and see how things play out.  We were pretty strong the whole race.  We had a lower control arm break in our qualifying heat race so we basically started last and we drove up to third before the competition caution.  We made some adjustments under that caution to try to make the car better and we restarted in the back and came back to the front.  Then we pitted later and changed a tire and came from the back again, so the car was really good and we’ll be bringing the same car back for this race.  We’ll make some small changes to it for the weather and the track conditions and we’ll hope for the best.”

The Lincoln Tech 100 will serve as the opening round of the Modified Touring Series Sunoco Quest for the Cup in which 12 drivers will accumulate points over the next 4 races to set up a top-5 in the standings for the final race of the 2017 season at Monadnock in September.  McKennedy, as well as the other 11 championship hopefuls, will be looking for a good finish to kick off their championship quest on a high note.

Ryan Preece Entered for Modified Touring Series Lincoln Tech 100 at Stafford

Stafford Springs, CT — When the Exit Realty Modified Touring Series returns to Stafford Speedway on July 21st for the Lincoln Tech 100, one driver who will be looking forward to the race is Ryan Preece.  The Berlin native has won at Stafford in Whelen Modified Tour competition and Valenti Modified Racing Series competition as well as in the SK Modified® division and he will be looking to add another victory to his Stafford resume after finishing second in the June MTS 125 at Stafford.

“I think we have a really good car, we’ve won 2 races and we’ve finished second in the other race,” said Preece.  “I like the way the tire reacts and we have our car working really well right now.  It’s always fun to keep on racing.”

When the Exit Realty Modified Touring Series was last at Stafford in June, Preece was the dominant car, leading the race twice for a total of 112 of the race’s 125 laps.  Preece held the lead until lap-121 when Jon McKennedy was able to make a pass and he led the final 5 laps to take the victory with Preece finishing in the runner-up position.  With the race being shortened from 125 laps down to 100 laps, Preece thinks that will be to his benefit.

Tommy Barrett Jr. Back In Victory Lane

Seekonk Speedway, Seekonk, Mass.

Driving the wheels off his Victory Lane Bar and Grill sponsored #9, Tommy Barrett Jr. of Millis MA outdistanced a potent field of modifieds on the new Modified Touring Series Saturday night (6/10).

After drawing the outside pole position for the start of the 125 lap marathon and with only 8 laps in the record books, Barrett slid by the inside of pole sitter Todd Annarummo of Swansea MA. Keith Rocco of Berlin CT followed Barrett for second on the same lap but lost it back to Annarummo on lap 30.

While Barrett was putting on a driving clinic at the point, behind him there was always two and sometimes three wide racing for position. Seven cautions calmed the action down briefly but on each restart Barrett took command; he never pitted and sped to his first MTS victory.

Jon McKennedy Scores Exit Realty Modified Touring Series 125 Victory at Stafford Speedway

Stafford Springs, CT — The Exit Realty Modified Touring Series made its first ever visit to Stafford for the MTS 125. Taking the checkered flag was Jon McKennedy, who passed Ryan Preece with 4 laps to go to take the win.

Ted Christopher streaked into the lead on the outside of Keith Rocco to take the early lead. Kirk Alexander looked like he was shot out of a cannon as he quickly bolted from fourth up to second at the start with Dylan Kopec taking third with Rocco falling back to fourth and Eric Goodale in fifth. The caution came out with 2 laps complete for a wreck in turn 3 that involving Les Hinckley.

Christopher took the lead with Kopec and Alexander side by side for second. Alexander took second with Tommy Barrett, Jr. muscling his way by Rocco into third before he spun in turn 2 to bring the caution out with 4 laps complete. Sam Rameau also came to a stop against the backstretch wall just at the exit of turn 2.

Galko, Fearn, Ferrigno, Provost, & Hydar Score Modified Touring Series 125 Feature Wins at Stafford

Stafford Springs, CT — Stafford Speedway returned to NASCAR Whelen All-American Series racing action on Friday, June 2nd with the Exit Realty Modified Touring Series making their Stafford debut along with Stafford’s five NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions.  Taking down weekly feature wins on the night were Matt Galko, who scored his first SK Modified® feature victory after 6 seasons, Tom Fearn in the Late Model division, Joey Ferrigno in the SK Light feature, Duane Provost in the Limited Late Model feature, and Travis Hydar was a first time career winner in the DARE Stock feature.

In the 40-lap SK Modified® feature event, Dan Avery took the lead at the green and he led the first lap before a melee broke out in turn 2 when Tony Membrino, Jr. spun in turn 2 in front of the entire field.  Nearly two-thirds of the field were involved in a pileup and brought the caution out.

Avery took the lead back under green with Matt Galko hounding him for the race lead while he was side by side with Cam McDermott for second.  Mike Christopher, Jr. was fourth and Glen Reen was fifth.  Galko finally got by McDermott and he took the lead from Avery on lap-5.  McDermott followed Galko by Avery and Christopher, Jr. took third from Avery on lap-8.  Reen was now side by side with Chase Dowling for fifth with Dowling taking the spot on the outside on lap-9.

Jon McKennedy Lists His Entry for Stafford Exit Realty MTS 125

Stafford Springs, CT — When the Exit Realty Modified Touring Series comes to Stafford Motor Speedway this Friday, June 2nd for the Inaugural MTS 125, Chelmsford, MA native Jon McKennedy is sure to be among the prerace favorites to take the checkered flag.  McKennedy has two Modified Racing Series wins at Stafford, coming in Sept. 2012 and just last September.  McKennedy will be returning to Stafford with the very same #29 Exit Realty Chevrolet that he piloted to victory just 7 months ago at Stafford.

“We’re coming back to Stafford with the same car that we won with in September with minor updates,” said McKennedy.  “We have some good notes and that’s always a plus since the tires are a little different.  We’ll have a good baseline to start off with.  We’re coming to Stafford to win and I don’t see why we can’t win the race.  We’ll be racing against guys we’ve raced with in the past and have won some of those races so we’ll see what happens.  It’ll be interesting for sure being a new series and it’ll be a long race with a pit stop involved with a tire change allowed.  It’s been a pretty good track for me the past few years and we’ve won a couple races so I’m looking forward to the race.  There’s a lot of good cars and teams so it should be a good race.”

As confident as McKennedy is feeling about his chances in the MTS 125, he says that Stafford hasn’t always been a track that he looked forward to coming to and it was a stint in Art Barry’s #21 machine that helped pave the way for his Stafford victories last season and in 2012.

Christopher and Preece Headline Exit Realty Modified Touring Series Entries at Stafford

Stafford Springs, CT — The Exit Realty Modified Touring Series will make its Stafford Speedway debut this Friday, June 2nd with a strong contingent of top modified talent lining the roster.  Headlining the current entry-list are two of the top modified drivers in the region, Ted Christopher, and 2017 NAPA Spring Sizzler® Champion Ryan Preece.

Ted Christopher, the all-time winningest driver at Stafford with 126 career victories including 104 SK Modified® wins, will pilot his familiar Brady #00 in Friday’s 125 lap feature. Christopher scored his most recent open modified victory behind the wheel of that same car in the June 2016 Stafford Valenti Modified Series 80.  During his last time out with the Brady team, Christopher scored a top 5 at the NAPA Spring Sizzler® and was a contender for another victory in the closing laps.

“It’s all different, different drivers you’re racing against and new tires,” explained Christopher. “We know the car goes good but it’s all a matter of how the tires are going to work.  We’re bringing the same car back that we won with last year with a spec engine in it and we’ll have pit stops that we can make if the car isn’t handling like we want, so I think we should be pretty good for the race.”

Ellwood Hopes to Sustain Momentum

Kyle Ellwood rallied from a cut tire on the first lap of the Performance Plus 150 to finish 15th. The inaugural NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at Myrtle Beach (SC) Speedway was his third top 15 finish.

“It was a fun place to drive on and you really had to be able to figure out your limits there rather quick because if you didn’t you burned your car up,” Ellwood said. “So, it took a lot of thought. It wasn’t just to go out there and hammer down. So, my thoughts on the whole race was it was pretty good.”

The Riverhead, NY driver felt confident in his car even though he was off the lead lap. Seven cars were eliminated in a pair of late restarts.

“In the middle of the race, I picked off as many cars as I could. I damn near felt like we passed probably 20 cars out there. I seen a lot of cars but at the end, I just let ’em all have at it. I didn’t want to tear our car up since we want to have a good opportunity going into this Thompson show.”

Hinckley Teams with Barry for MTS Races

Les Hinckley, III will be driving for Spearpoint Racing for the inaugural  Exit Realty Modified Touring Series (MTS) season. Hall of Famer car owner Art Barry called to ask about Hinckley’s plans. The opportunity came through a voicemail from Barry Thursday and the deal came together during the follow-up call.

“The guy’s absolutely a legend in racing,” Hinckley said. “The racing community and racing in general has been lucky to have a man like that to have him for as long as we have because he just lives and dies for racing.  … For him to call me and ask me to drive his racecar and to be excited about it the way he is is just its humbling. The list of names that have been in his car for me to be one of ’em it really puts me in check. This is bigger than me and I can’t thank Art enough for thinking highly enough about me to be worthy to drive his race car.”

Barry wants to win one more race before he retires. Barry competed last season on the Northeast Race Cars & Parts Tri-Track Open Modified Series (TTOMS) with Justin Bonsignore.

“I think he’s really good,” Barry said. “He’s a gentleman. He talks to you and he’s very, very good about reasoning things out, working together, and he’s really good on equipment that’s for sure. I’m kind of looking forward to it.”

EXIT Realty has signed on as the premier sponsor of the Modified Touring Series for 2017. Derek Beatrice, owner of EXIT Realty Beatrice Assoc., has been involved in motorsports for a number of years sponsoring billboards at several speedways, as well as assisting several race teams. MTS 125 Getting Schooled at Stafford

Stafford Springs, CT — Class is in session at Stafford Speedway as Lincoln Technical Institute of East Windsor has signed on to present the Modified Touring Series 125 on July 21.  The 2017 season will be the eighth consecutive year that Lincoln Tech has sponsored an event at the Stafford half-mile.  Lincoln Tech joined the Stafford family of sponsors in 2010 as the title sponsor of the Late Model 100.  The partnership continues in 2017 with the Inaugural Lincoln Tech 125 featuring the newly formed Modified Touring Series on Friday, July 21.

“Every year this partnership keeps getting better,” said said Rob Wargo, Eastern Connecticut High School Admissions Reps for Lincoln Tech.  “We’ve had nothing but success with the Stafford program which is geared towards finding the prospects that we’re looking for at Lincoln tech.  It’s been a shared partnership where we both feed off of the other’s strengths and it’s been nothing but good things.  We’ve done Modifieds, Late Models, and the Back 2 Skool night in the past and looking at the 2017 schedule we saw the Modified Touring Series coming to Stafford for the very first time so we thought, let’s be part of that race.  It’s something different than we’ve done in the past and we’re excited. Every year we get enrollments from our events and we’ve also made a lot of liaisons with employers we’re able to work those leads through our career services department.  When people see me now, they don’t refer to me as the Lincoln Tech guy, they call me the Stafford guy, so that’s a pretty good thing and it shows just how much this partnership has been working for us.”

The origins of the Stafford-Lincoln Tech partnership dates back prior to the 2010 season when Kris Fluckiger, who was a DARE Stock driver and also a Lincoln Tech student at the time, brought the two parties together and resulted in Lincoln Tech sponsoring the Late Model 100 that season.  Fluckiger will serve as the grand marshal of the Lincoln Tech 125 and he will send the modified field on its way with the most famous words in motorsports.
