Hirschman Looks to Continue Myrtle Beach Success

Matt Hirschman of Northampton, PA discounts his experience at Myrtle Beach (SC) Speedway ahead of Saturday’s NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour opener. He cited teams that privately tested or competed in a 50-lap Modified race last month, where he finished third. Hirschman has three consecutive podiums at Myrtle Beach.

“It’s not gonna be totally foreign to them,” Hirschman said. “But it’s a unique place and having raced there now a few times over the last year and a half certainly helps and we have won a race there which is always a boost of confidence.”

The tire wear at the half-mile oval is well known. Last month’s Modified race demonstrated conservation’s role with part of the field dropping back to preserve tires.

“There are abrasive tracks and then there’s Myrtle Beach. It’s hard to explain but it’s definitely the extreme on that end. It’s really unlike any other track I’ve run at.”

Emerling Emerges on NWMT

Bristol is an opportunity for Patrick Emerling to reach new heights. The Orchard Park, NY driver enters the Bush’s Beans 150 sixth in points. He has ranked sixth in points four times since last year. Emerling could reach the top five in points after Bristol. Emerling’s first top five was at Bristol in 2011. He has two top tens in three races there.

Another top ten at Bristol would match another career best. He has reached three consecutive top tens twice before. He averaged a 6.6 at Bristol, New Hampshire, and Stafford last year. He matched that earlier this year at Stafford, New London-Waterford, and Stafford, averaging 8th.

“It’s another kind of a neutral track, so historically we always kind of did better there,” Emerling said. “But I always went fast. Every time I was down there I always had fast cars down there … I took my notes from last year and hopefully made the car a little bit better for me this year and I’m hoping to walk away with actually a win this year. … so I think I’m going to have more confidence going into it.”

Pecko Seeks First ROC Win

Nick Pecko of Vandling, PA will return to the Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Tour for his third season. He likes running the ROC Tour because he feels it will make him a better driver by getting comfortable at different tracks.

“You kinda slack a little bit because you’re racing there every week,” Pecko said. “There is no room for slack. You have to work your tail off to make sure your car is good enough for the race to go out and win.”

Pecko likes going to Lancaster and Shangri-La 2. “Everyone hates it (Lancaster), but we get around there good. I think the surface is so worn out and rough. It’s almost kind of running on dirt, which I did for 15 years, so it’s still kinda in my blood.”

Matt Hirschman Looking to Do Something That has Never Happened in 63 Editions of the Sunoco Race of Champions – Three Peat.

BINGHAMTON, NY — The Sunoco Race of Champions Weekend is this Friday and Saturday at the Oswego Speedway. On Sunday six-time Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Tour Champion Matt Hirschman will try to accomplish a feat that has never been done in the RoC 200, win it three consecutive years. The Sunoco Race of Champions Modified 200 takes place on Sunday along with the 2014 Oswego Speedway Super Modified Championship title race and Super Stock 75 lap event. Qualifying begins at 12 noon on Sunday with the winner of the RoC 200 earning a minimum of $10,000.

Hirschman, a six-time Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Tour Champion is currently second in the overall tour standings entering the event. Chuck Hossfeld a two-time winner of the RoC 200 and two-time RoC Tour Champion stands in his way. Hossfeld has been on a tear this season and is fresh off a win at Oswego Speedway on Classic Weekend in the Modified 100.

For Hirschman a victory this Sunday would put him in his own status among Modified drivers. There is always great debate over who are the top Modified drivers of all time. If Hirschman won on Sunday no one could deny his accomplishment. Hirschman will have a long overnight tow from the Riverhead Speedway on Long Island as he will be competing in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event on Saturday evening.

Rudolph Experiences Successful Weekend

Erick Rudolph of Ransomville and the DeLange Racing team were on the road again last weekend. On Saturday they traveled east on NY Route 104 to Oswego Speedway for a Race of Champions Dart Asphalt Modified Tour 125-lap race, a part of the 52nd edition of the famed International Classic Weekend. A strong field of Modifieds was on hand. Rudolph qualified the #45 Original Pizza Logs/PrimeTyme Motorsports//Brigham Concrete Modified through his heat race and lined up 12th on the starting grid for the feature event.

In the early laps the crafty teenager ran a conservative pace, biding time and conserving his tires. He worked his way into the top-ten and then settled there. He was ninth when a lap 66 caution brought most of the field onto pit road for service. The DeLange pit crew made up of Jason Kerrigan, Joe Zahno, Chris Murphy and Joe Mihalics did an outstanding job and got their car out ahead of the other cars that pitted, giving them a distinct advantage by not having to pass those cars on the track at racing speed. That effort did not go unnoticed.
