Sprint Cars Return to Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday Following Successful Test

Hanson, Austin make first laps around new 1/3-mile dirt track

WEST HAVEN, VT – The winged warriors of the Bond Auto Parts Sprint Cars of New England (SCoNE) tour will make their official debut at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Saturday, October 18, joining the AutoSaver Ford/Springfield Buick-GMC “Vermont Freedom & Unity” event.  A successful test was completed by two teams on Wednesday, drawing rave reviews.

Lacey Hanson, a veteran of season seasons with the SCoNE series, and 16-year-old rookie Tyler Austin each turned laps in order to help gather information for their teams and competitors alike.  For Hanson, whose team is based just 10 minutes from the track in Orwell, VT, it was a productive day.

“It was great.  I was glad we got to come out and practice and see what the track is like,” she said.  “I think it’s going to be a great show.”

All Sprint Cars Great and Small

WENTWORTH, NH — The Legion Speedway in Wentworth, NH was visited by the SCoNE (Sprint Cars of New England) tour on Sunday, July 21. It was part of their Twin-State Championship series that includes the Canaan USA Speedway and Bradford VT’s Bear Ridge Speedway. The evening’s racing was sponsored by Route 118 Automotive and Trevor Rocke Auto Body.

Veteran Modified driver Rick Martel (#28) was recently given the opportunity to move up to sprint cars this year. He has taken full advantage of the chance. Starting from pole position he led every lap of a caution-free 25-lap feature. That simple statistic does nothing to express how hard he had to work for the win. Series veteran “Dangerous” Dan Douville (#7) came from deep in the field to second place, and nearly stole the win on the final corner. SCoNE points leader Chris Donnelly (#17) held off teammate Tyler Rich (#20) to take third.

As exciting as that race was, the 600cc Mini-Sprint feature might just have topped it. The division has been dominated by the #89 of Luke Greenwood. But Toby Tatro (#19) got off to an early lead, and try as he might Greenwood was unable to get by. Tatro’s win was only the second time Greenwood has been denied the top spot all year. Brian Gray (#3) held off Spencer Allen (#22) for third.

Douville Tames Bear Ridge Sprint Car Field, Patterson Captures First Modified Win

Adam Pierson Dominates USAC Dirt Midgets

BRADFORD, VT – Veteran stock car and sprint car driver Dan Douville wowed the crowd at Bear Ridge Speedway in Bradford, VT on Saturday night with a rim riding performance in the 25-lap Sprint Cars of New England (SCoNE) feature on Jiffy Mart of Bradford Night as part of the 99ROCK Weekly Racing Series. A jammed pit area saw a total of 111 race teams from five states competing on the seven-division card.

Douville, from Bridgewater, NH started the race in the ninth position and used the races only caution to his advantage, taking the lead from Orwell, VT resident Lacey Hanson with just 5 laps remaining in the race after racing side by side with her for a couple of laps. Hanson, a multi time Granite State Mini Sprint Champion, posted a career best second place finish with veteran Chris Donnelly completing the top three. Chris Downs was fourth with Will Hull fifth.

“Fast” Eddie Patterson of Websterville, VT captured his first career win on dirt Saturday night in the 40-lap Bond Auto Parts DIRTcar Sportsman Modified feature. Patterson, whose last win came on the asphalt in 2002, tracked down early leader Derek Barker working his way into the lead at the halfway point of the event. Barker finished a solid second, a career best for the young driver. Robert Tucker claimed third, holding off Tim Hodge and Jason Gray, who finished fourth and fifth.

Will Hull Makes Maiden Voyage to Sprint Car Victory Lane

BRADFORD, VT – As a three-time track champion in Late Models, Will Hull of East Montpelier doesn’t need a road map to find victory lane at Bear Ridge Speedway, but he made the journey in a Sprint Car for the first time on Saturday night. The soft spoken chauffer did it in style, winning his heat and then using a dramatic pass in lapped traffic on lap 23 to snatch the victory from SCoNE 2011 Rookie of the Year Tyler Rich. On the last turn of the final lap, Chris Donnelly, who started 14th, was also able to get beneath Rich and beat him to the line by less than a car length.

“After the heat, we changed to a harder right rear tire and made an adjustment on the wing,” Hull explained. “In the feature the tire seemed to work for a while until it cooled down under the yellow flag and I lost a lot of ground on the restart. But after a couple of laps, the heat got back in it and I just worked the bottom. Tyler was doing a great job on the outside, but I could see that the lapped traffic was making him back up to me. I stuck to the bottom and just kept picking away and it worked out.”

Donnelly, who won under similar circumstances last week at the Canaan Dirt Speedway, was surprised by his runner-up finish. “It was a great run and I’m very happy. I didn’t have many expectations- when I got up to third I figured that was probably it. I couldn’t find a line that was useful, I tried running the top and with a few laps to go we got into lapped traffic and I decided to go back down to the bottom and it paid off. It’s too bad for Tyler, he was running so well all night, but he just slipped a little high and ended up losing the deal.”

B Mains May Be Toughest SCoNE Races in 2012

CHESTER, VT – With a likely increase in the number of competitors and possible average car counts in to 20 to 24 ranges, the B Main or Last Chance Qualifier may just provide some of the best racing for the Sprint Cars of New England during the 2012 season.

“We really hate to send anybody home without qualifying for the A Main,” says SCoNE honcho Mike Kondrat, “but we have to strike a balance. Having more than 18 full sized, winged 360 Sprint Cars on the tracks we race on doesn’t make for a good show for the fans and almost always tears up a lot of equipment. Don’t get me wrong, there is no place we’d rather race than on the quarter miles at Canaan, Bear Ridge and Legion, but we have to use our heads too.”

Unless track operators specify otherwise, SCoNE features will be limited to 18 cars in 2012, as they were in 2011. When there are 22 or fewer cars, two heats will be run and seven cars from each heat will qualify for the A Main. The remainder will go to the B Main from which four cars will qualify. When there are 23 or more cars, three heats will be run with five cars qualifying. An additional three cars will qualify from the B Main.

In order to maintain SCoNE’s hard-won reputation as the tour that starts the fastest cars and best drivers at the back of the A Main, the current handicapping system will continue in 2012, with minor changes.

SCoNE Points Battle Too Close to Call at Canaan Dirt Speedway This Friday Night

Canaan, NH —  When the methanol breathing mudslinging winged warriors of the Sprint Cars of New England pull into the pits at Canaan Dirt Speedway in Canaan, NH this Friday night August 19, they’ll be carrying with them a points battle that’s too close to call. With just three points races left – excluding the Labor Day Weekend Triple Crown Series that has its own points fund- nine SCoNE drivers have a statistical possibility of claiming the 2011 points crown.

With four wins to his credit, defending Champion Chris Donnelly of Piermont, NH has a slim, 28 point lead over Dan Douville of Bridgewater, NH, who won the season opener at Canaan Dirt Speedway back in May. “The Fairlee Flier,” Kevin Chaffee of Fairlee, VT currently rides third in points, with a third place finish at Bear Ridge Speedway over Independence Day weekend as his best effort so far.

When the 360 cubic inch, open cockpit SCoNE Sprint Cars last stormed into Canaan Dirt Speedway on July 15, Jim Lowrey of Tilton, NH had the crowd on its feet and screaming for more with his last lap, last turn pass to steal a win from Shawn Lawler of Mason, NH. Lawler, a former SCoNE Champion is still in the chase for the 2011 championship, as is former Champion Tunk Berry. Rookies Tyler Rich and Will Hull can’t be counted out either.

Berry, Norrie, Reil and Hanson Take Season Openers at Legion Speedway Open Cockpit Super Sunday Series

Rumney, NH — The 2011 season at Legion Speedway got off to a rousing – albeit a several months tardy- start on Sunday with Nick Berry, Doug Norrie, Terry Reil and Lacey Hanson taking down wins in the all open cockpit, all winged, Super Sunday Series.

Berry, of Manchester, NH, who has only raced Sprint Cars sporadically in recent years while concentrating on his Modified exploits, pulled off a wire-to-wire victory, besting a 19 car field of talented 360ci Sprint Car drivers in the Sprint Cars of New England 25 lap marquee event. It was Berry’s first Sprint Car win since 2007.

At the start, Berry faced a surprising challenge from NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour star “Asphalt Andy” Seuss, who is in his rookie year both on dirt and in a Sprint Car.

“To be honest, I thought I’d be able to get by Andy easy at the start, because he doesn’t have much time in a Sprint Car, but he did a really good job, he didn’t give it to me without a fight, that’s for sure,” Berry confided. “I knew I had a good car, so after I got the lead, it was just a matter of being patient and then working my way through lapped traffic. The car hooked up really well so I just had to not over drive it.”

SCoNE Champ Chris Donnelly Re-Repeats in Sprint Car Passfest at Bear Ridge Speedway

Bradford, VT — When he won in both a Sprint Car and a Modified last week, defending Sprint Cars of New England Champion Chris Donnelly made history by becoming the first driver in the 44 years of Bear Ridge Speedway to win features in two divisions on the same night. This week he did it again.

The Piermont, NH resident started eleventh in the 25 lap SCoNE feature and methodically worked his way through traffic until lap 10 when he passed pole sitter Bob Giuliani for the lead. A 24 lap green flag run provided Donnelly with the opportunity to lap all but the first seven cars. The win was Donnelly’s third in four SCoNE starts so far this season.

“Never in my wildest dreams,” Donnelly said in victory lane, “it’s been phenomenal. I was able to just take my time, let them get sorted out and then pick them off at the bottom. I had a feeling that the top might be good, but everybody was running the bottom or the middle. When I got through the traffic I did try the top and apparently that was the fast way around. Lapped traffic got a little dicey, but the car is still super good and we’re not changing anything. I enjoyed myself because SCoNE is a great bunch to race with.”

Chris Donnelly Takes Second Straight SCoNE Feature, Bats .750 for the Night at Bear Ridge Speedway

BRADFORD, VT – After winning a DIRTcar Sportsman Modified feature and a Sprint Car heat race earlier in the night, Chris Donnelly of Piermont, NH turned in a dominating performance in the Sprint Cars of New England feature, coming from tenth place to earn his second consecutive SCoNE feature win. His sole non-win came in his final race of the night, when he started deep in the pack and “only” finished third in the second Modified feature.

Kevin Chaffee of Fairlee, VT employed his customary unobtrusive, methodical and craftsmanlike style to advance from sixth to the runner-up spot while Dan Douville of Bridgewater, NH sliced and diced his way through the field to finish third, after an early race incident caused him to restart tailback.

“The car was just about perfect tonight, it would go wherever I needed to go,” Donnelly said, downplaying his own role in the outcome. “We’re running a new Triple X chassis and I found a set-up that really matches my driving style, even though we had to make some big changes from what Triple X recommends. I built the shocks myself and the first week of the season they were just awful. I pulled them off and rebuilt them and we’ve been going great ever since.”

Midget vs. Sprint Car in Champions Challenge at Bear Ridge This Saturday

Bradford, VT —  One of racing’s great questions – which is faster on a dirt short track, a Midget or a Sprint Car? – will be answered this Saturday night July 2 at Bear Ridge Speedway when a pair of champions go mano a mano in a two car match race.

In the First Annual Champions Challenge, Joe Krawiec, the 2010 Whip City Speedway Quad 4 Midget Champ, will represent the USAC DMA Midgets while former Bear Ridge track champ Kevin Chaffee will defend the honor of the SCoNE Sprint Car drivers.

Both drivers are at the peak of their games at Bear Ridge this season. Krawiec has two Midget feature wins and Chafee was the runner-up both times. Chafee also has a DIRTcar Sportsman Modified win to his credit this season.

USAC-DMA Midgets and SCoNE Sprint Cars Will Make History on July 2 at Bear Ridge Speedway

Bradford, VT – According to a trio of New England open cockpit racing historians, when the USAC-Dirt Midget Association and the Sprint Cars of New England appear on the same program at Bear Ridge Speedway on Saturday July 2, they’ll almost certainly be making history. It will be the first time that Midgets and Sprint Cars have ever appeared on the same bill in northern New England.

“I think this is probably a first,” said Dick Monahan of Newburyport, MA, 25 year member and former President of the NEMA Midgets. “During the 50’s and early 60’s URC Sprint Cars and ARDC Midgets ran the Champlain Valley Fair in Essex Junction, VT, but they ran on successive days. Each sanctioning body insisted on running its own show and did not want another one on the same bill.”

“It would take some serious research to figure that one out for sure,” said John DaDalt of Stafford Springs, CT “but I’m not aware of any split shows with Midgets and Sprint Cars in Maine, New Hampshire or Vermont.”
