Donny Schatz to Carry Arctic Cat Colors in 2017

Leading Powersports Manufacturer Aligns with Tony Stewart Racing and Eight-Time World of Outlaws Champion

INDIANAPOLIS (Feb. 2, 2017) – For the past 20 years, Donny Schatz has attacked the terrain of dirt tracks all across the United States in his quest to become the best Sprint car racer in the world. The driver for Tony Stewart-Curb/Agajanian Racing (TSR) is coming off his eighth World of Outlaws (WoO) Craftsman Sprint Car Series championship and is looking to continue raising the bar this season in grassroots racing’s most challenging series with a new partner that shares his passion for reaching greatness and possesses a mindset without limits.

Arctic Cat, a world leader in designing, engineering and manufacturing all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), snowmobiles and recreational off-highway vehicles (side-by-sides or ROVs), announced today a partnership with TSR and Schatz that includes primary sponsorship of the TSR No. 15 Arctic Cat J&J that the Fargo, North Dakota driver will compete with at more than 90 races from coast to coast in 2017, beginning next week in Florida. In addition, Arctic Cat will also be co-primary sponsor on the TSR No. 14 that Tony Stewart will pilot in more than 50 races on dirt in 2017.

A Sprinter’s Pace

As the 2017 season quickly approaches, who is the man to beat?

CONCORD, N.C. – January 17, 2017 – The World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series is on the brink of its 40th season, and the series drivers regroup from the offseason to compete on sprint car racing’s most storied tour. Some 13 full-time drivers will herd their 900-horses to every end of the compass nationwide in 2017, seeking to either build on their existing legacy or make their tracks.

Last season, most of the tracks were up for grabs as 10 full-time drivers took the checkers at least once. Early on, Kasey Kahne Racing proved its dominance in the state of Texas. Daryn Pittman and Brad Sweet were the lone stars for the series’ first swing through the state, splitting victories at Cotton Bowl Speedway and Royal Purple Speedway. But it was series veterans Joey Saldana and Larson Marks Racing’s Shane Stewart who ended their Texas tirade with wins at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. In 2017, Gator Motorplex will host the series for the first time and the series will return to LoneStar Speedway for the first time in six years; these two tracks will replace the ones where Kasey Kahne Racing saw success, potentially releveling the playing field.

Tony Stewart Racing’s Donny Schatz – the series’ eight-time champion – has consistently defended his home state of North Dakota. Specifically, at River Cities Speedway, one of his most beloved tracks, Schatz swept 2016. Not only that, but Schatz has also taken six of the last eight races there since 2013. The Outlaws have visited the 3/10th-mile course 19 times since 2007, giving Schatz a 42 percent success rate at a track that has two midseason races in 2017. Schatz claimed 56 series races in two years, nearly one-quarter of his 229 career wins with the series.

Schatz Sweetens the Season with Win

Gravel records career-best season on tour
CONCORD, N.C. – Oct. 29, 2016 – Donny Schatz orchestrated the celebration of his 229th career trip to victory lane differently Saturday night at The Dirt Track at Charlotte. The 20-year World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series superstar – as usual – hoisted the flag into an erupting confetti machine after the Bad Boy Off Road World Finals. But the thousands of fans erupted too when he casted the VP Racing Fuels checkered flag into the stands among the falling confetti.
Another extraordinary component to Schatz’s night-cap was his reflection on the other 24 wins during the season. Each victory added value to his season – alongside the 60 top-five’s and 77 top-10’s in a season with some-90 points races. Collectively, his consistent success throughout the rigor of one of the most premier national tours led to a dominant 314-point spread in the series’ points race. With the points lead, Schatz officially captured his eighth series championship; Schatz has won a championship in 40 percent of his seasons with the Outlaws.
“I know fans would have loved to see it go down to the wire,” said Schatz about his championship campaign. “It’s hard to say in this sport when you take 92 events coast-to-coast you have during the season. We left Florida to start this season 100-plus points in the hole. We had to win. We dug out of that hole – a 100-point deficit to a 300-point deposit with four DNFs along the way. To me, it was one of the hardest fought comebacks that we’ve had, and I’m really proud of my guys for that. After that, it says there’s nothing my guys can’t do.”

Johnson Earns Fourth Series Win of 2016

Eight Outlaws finish inside the Top 10
CONCORD, N.C. – Oct. 28, 2016 – Jason Johnson set the tone for the World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series Friday night, winning the first night of racing for the Bad Boy Off Road World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte. Johnson, who idled his winged sprint down victory lane for the fourth time this season, has made his victories count for the series’ most celebrated races in 2016.
“I’ll tell you what, these Priority Aviation/ Mesilla Valley Transportation guys have been doing a hell of a job all year long,” said Johnson, beaming on the front-stretch. “To cap it off at the end of the year with a victory in front of this great crowd…couldn’t say anymore bout the facility at such an awesome event…to win is just an honor.”
Earlier in the year, Johnson recorded his second win at the prestigious 5-Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores on August 13. At Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway, the Eunice, La. native battled wheel-to-wheel with points leader Donny Schatz for a valuable extension on the event’s 56-year history. Johnson encountered a similar situation at World Finals.

TSR Bad Boy Off Road/Chevrolet Performance Team Looks To Conclude WoO Championship Season on High Note in Charlotte

INDIANAPOLIS (Oct. 25, 2016) – As a 19-year-old back in January of 1997, Tony Stewart-Curb Agajanian Racing (TSR) driver Donny Schatz embarked on a journey he had only dreamed would become a reality. Over the last 20 years of competing with World of Outlaws (WoO) Craftsman Sprint Car Series, his accomplishments rival those of the series’ all-time greats. This weekend, Schatz and the TSR Bad Boy Off Road/Chevrolet Performance team look to put an exclamation point on his 20th season by not only claiming the 2016 WoO Championship, but also coming out on top in the season’s final two races at the 10th annual Bad Boy Off Road World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte (N.C.) Motor Speedway.

He’s come a long way since winning the WoO Rookie of the Year award and, by signing in Thursday, the Fargo, North Dakota racer will clinch his eighth WoO crown. Schatz leads the world’s best Sprint car drivers back to Charlotte as the Outlaws’ series leader in 2016 with 24 victories, 58 top-five finishes and 75 top-10s behind the wheel of the TSR No. 15 Bad Boy Off Road/Chevrolet Performance J&J. Final Battle with Pennsylvania Posse Awaits TSR Bad Boy Off Road/Chevrolet Performance Team

INDIANAPOLIS (Oct. 12, 2016) – The 20th season of competition with the World of Outlaws (WoO) Craftsman Sprint Car Series has been another historic chapter for Tony Stewart-Curb Agajanian Racing (TSR) driver Donny Schatz. The North Dakota native started his Outlaw career in 1997 and is just six races away from completing his 20th campaign with “The Greatest Show on Dirt.” But, there’s still an opportunity to make this season even more special with a final trip into enemy territory this weekend as the Outlaws take on the “Pennsylvania Posse” Friday and Saturday with Schatz looking to be the season’s first and last Outlaw winner in the state of Pennsylvania.

The seven-time and reigning WoO champion won the Gettysburg Clash at Lincoln Speedway back in May to carry the torch for the Outlaws, and he’ll look to add not only to his 292-point lead in the WoO championship standings Friday, but also to his legacy in the 54th annual Champion Racing Oils Morgan Hughes National Open at historic Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg. It was originally scheduled to be a three-race event two weeks ago, but Mother Nature washed out all the action, forcing the Outlaws to reschedule and reduce the event to a single night. The weekend concludes with the Outlaws returning to Port Royal Speedway for the third straight October.

Schatz is the all-time winningest driver of the prestigious National Open with five career wins, and is one of 31 drivers on a remarkable list of previous event winners. Those five wins are part of 19 career victories at the famous half-mile, dirt oval. He trails only Steve Kinser in career Outlaw wins at the facility and ranks 19th in the track’s all-time win list. If he can take the checkered flag in Friday’s $25,000-to-win, 40-lap A-Feature, he’ll surpass Jan Opperman, Tommy Hinnershitz and Kramer Williamson, and tie his childhood hero Doug Wolfgang with 20 career Williams Grove triumphs.

TSR Bad Boy Off Road/Chevrolet Performance Team Looking To Continue Empire State Dominance

INDIANAPOLIS (Oct. 6, 2016) – Building and sustaining a dynasty in any sport is an extremely difficult task, but that’s just what Donny Schatz and Tony Stewart-Curb Agajanian Racing (TSR) have successfully done in the ultra-competitive World of Outlaws (WoO) Sprint Car Series since teaming up in 2008. With a sixth WoO championship within their grasp following another record-breaking season with “The Greatest Show on Dirt,” their legacy in the sport continues to grow.

Success for the team has been widespread, ranging from sport’s biggest stages to conquering new facilities. And in this, his 20th season of competing with the series, Schatz is looking to continue his dominance of dirt ovals in the state of New York Saturday when he leads the Outlaws to Fulton Speedway.

The driver of the TSR No. 15 Bad Boy Off Road/Chevrolet Performance J&J heads to the Empire State for the 75th night of racing in the 2016 WoO campaign with a 284-point advantage in the championship standings and only seven races remaining. The seven-time and reigning WoO champion leads the traveling Sprint car stars to the 3/8-mile dirt oval for the first time since July 2014 and fifth time overall. Schatz has won the Outlaws’ previous five A-Features in New York and has earned 12 of his 227 career WoO A-Feature triumphs in the state, including a 2006 triumph at Fulton.

Bad Boy Off Road/Chevrolet Performance Team Focused on Historic National Open

INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 29, 2016) – Two decades ago Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing (TSR) driver Donny Schatz made his first laps at historic Williams Grove Speedway in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania and the teenager from North Dakota wasn’t quite sure it was a track that he would look forward to returning to. It didn’t take long for him to come around and for the last 15 years, it’s been one of the stops on the World of Outlaws (WoO) Craftsman Sprint Car Series tour he looks forward to most.

The driver of TSR No. 15 Bad Boy Off Road/Chevrolet Performance J&J returns to Williams Grove this weekend for the 54th annual Champion Racing Oil Morgan Hughes National Open. Schatz is the all-time winningest driver in the event with five career triumphs and his 19 career Outlaw wins trail only Steve Kinser for most by any driver at the famed half-mile dirt oval. Remarkable stats for a driver that failed to qualify for his first main event at the track.

His outlook on “The Grove” changed late in his fourth season with the Outlaws when he arrived at the 2000 National Open with veteran mechanic Kenny Woodruff turning the wrenches on his family-owned No. 15. Schatz recalls the guidance “KW” provided that weekend leading to one of the more memorable upsets in the biggest Sprint car race in the East. To this day, he points to lessons learned that weekend as key to his development as a driver.

Donny Schatz World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series Gold Cup Race of Champions Advance

DONNY SCHATZ: TSR Bad Boy Off Road/Chevrolet Performance Team Seeking Repeat in Prestigious Gold Cup Race of Champions

INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 8, 2016) – Expectations for the 2016 World of Outlaws (WoO) Craftsman® Sprint Car Series were set pretty high by Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing (TSR) driver Donny Schatz and his Bad Boy Off Road/Chevrolet Performance team. Following his “Golden Season” in 2015, during which Schatz established a career-best win total en route to a seventh WoO championship, it was important to keep pushing to get better in this, his 20th season of competing with “The Greatest Show on Dirt.”

The driver of the TSR No. 15 Bad Boy Off Road/Chevrolet Performance J&J will look to duplicate his success of 2015 at one of the most historic tracks on the WoO schedule when he returns to Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, California for the 62nd Annual Gold Cup Race of Champions this weekend. Last season, Schatz won the Mini Gold Cup in the spring, then became a two-time Gold Cup winner with his triumph in the 40-lap race in September. Earlier this season, he won his third Mini Gold Cup in the last five seasons and is looking to join Steve Kinser and Jac Haudenschild as the only drivers who have won the Gold Cup three times since the event has been sanctioned by the WoO.

Schatz returns to California not only as the defending Gold Cup champion and winner of the last two WoO races at Silver Dollar Speedway, but also the Outlaws’ most recent victor following his triumph Wednesday night at Willamette Speedway in Lebanon, Oregon. The Fargo, North Dakota racer took the lead from Brad Sweet on lap three and raced away to a 4.5-second victory in the contest that went nonstop and took just over seven minutes to complete. The victory was his 21st of the season and fifth in his last seven WoO starts. It was also his 225th career WoO A-Feature win and Willamette Speedway became the 80th different track where Schatz has won a WoO A-Feature.

TSR Bad Boy Off Road/Chevrolet Performance Driver Continues Peak Run As Outlaws Head to Great Northwest for Labor Day Weekend Tripleheader

INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 1, 2016) – Early in what has become a storied 20-year World of Outlaws (WoO) Craftsman® Sprint Car Series career, Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing (TSR) driver Donny Schatz looked at the annual late-summer trip to the Great Northwest as a time to take a breath and enjoy the view as the WoO campaign began winding down.

For Schatz, the Labor Day-weekend tripleheader in Washington offers the driver of the TSR No. 15 Bad Boy Off Road/Chevrolet Performance J&J the opportunity to continue his breathtaking pace in the quest for an eighth WoO championship. Schatz leads the Outlaws back into action Friday andSaturday at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Washington for the Outlaws Energy Showdown before concluding the weekend with the annual Labor Day race at Grays Harbor Raceway Park in Elma, Washington.

During those initial runs through Montana, Washington, and Oregon, the climb to the top of the Outlaws’ hierarchy may have seemed as difficult as reaching the peak of the snow-covered Mountain ranges they traveled through to reach the dirt ovals in Billings, Yakima, Elma and Cottage Grove. The Fargo, North Dakota driver spent his early 20s learning how to win Outlaw races competing against the sport’s iconic drivers Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell and chasing the likes of Dave Blaney, Mark Kinser, and Danny Lasoski late in the summer at dirt ovals around the northwest.

Rico Abreu the Strongest Man in Ironman 55 Win

Becomes the sixth different event winner and 16th series winner of the season

PEVELY, Mo. – Aug. 6, 2016 – Rico Abreu proved to be the strongest man Saturday night at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 as he powered forward and battled to the lead scoring his first World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory of the season and the Federated Auto Parts Ironman 55 presented by Walker.

Abreu, a NASCAR Truck Series regular, slipped back to fifth early but battled back into the top three after a lap 26 restart. He worked his way around the No. 9 of Daryn Pittman then set his sights on the No. 49 of Brad Sweet. Sweet bobbled coming off of turn four and Abreu raced past him onto the front straight.

Through traffic, the then leader Kerry Madsen lost ground to Abreu and Sweet. On lap 38 Abreu threw a slider on Madsen through turns three and four, but Madsen held. What commenced though was a two-lap, three-way battle for the lead. Abreu eventually got around and through restarts, traffic and a brush with the wall on the final lap, Abreu cruised to the Ironman 55 win.

Gravel Battles Rain, Restarts for Prelude to the Ironman Win

Scores his second straight win and seventh of the season

PEVELY, Mo. – Aug. 5, 2016 – Neither rain nor restarts could dampen David Gravel’s Friday night as he dominated the Monroe Shocks and Struts Prelude to the Ironman at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 and scored his second straight and seventh overall World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series victory of the season.

Off-and-on light rain fell on the 1/3 mile, bullring in Pevely, Mo. throughout the feature, but Gravel was the class of the field in his No. 5 Big Game Treestands machine. Multiple restarts hit in the middle of the 35-lap main event, but Gravel held off the competition behind and cruised to the finish. He has led the last 75 laps of World of Outlaws competition.

“We’re really rolling right now,” Gravel said in victory lane. “It was a really fast race track around the top and the rain made the top even better and tighter as the race went on… We’ve won a rain-shortened race so you don’t want to get too many of those. You want to earn them. You needed that 35-lap workout because 55 laps tomorrow is going to be tough, for sure.”

A Little Luck and A Lot of Skill Help Lance Dewease to Summer Nationals Win

Retains coveted Morgan Cup trophy for the Pennsylvania Posse and pockets $25,000

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – July 23, 2016 – Lance Dewease’s World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series victory in the the Champion Racing Oil Summer Nationals finale at Williams Grove Speedway on Saturday night took a lot of hard work and a little good luck.

Dewease, who spent much of the first two-thirds of the feature looking for a line around Joey Saldana, battled to the lead on one restart, had do it again after the caution flew before a lap was completed and then, after the caution flew on the final lap for Aaron Ott, who spun near the start/finish line, ran out of fuel as the open red was called.

“I was out (of fuel) about six laps before that,” Dewease said. “It kept shutting off going down the straight away. I just slowed way out of the throttle so I could try to make it to the end, took the white, it sputtered a little going up the back stretch, I thought I was good and we come of four for the checkered and the yellow comes out. I thought, man, we’re done… Everything went our way tonight.”

MECHANICSBURG, Pa. – July 22, 2016 – Daryn Pittman held off the Pennsylvania Posse in Friday night’s Champion Racing Oil Summer Nationals opener at Williams Grove Speedway to score his seventh World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series victory of the season.

Posse regulars Lance Dewease and Greg Hodnett both tried to run down the No. 9 Great Clips car, but Pittman held tough and gave the Outlaws their second win in Posse territory this season.

“I don’t know if I’m more nervous with (Hodnett) behind me or (Dewease) – neither one of them you want to see on the scoreboard,” Pittman said in victory lane. “Man, we won again at Williams Grove… this is a special race track to win at.”

David Gravel Battles to Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup Victory

Picks up his fifth World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory of the season

SARVER, Pa. – July 19, 2016 – Donny Schatz did not make it easy, but David Gravel proved up to the task as he battled to his fifth World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series victory of the season in the 25th Annual Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup at Lernerville Speedway on Tuesday night.

Gravel started from the front, but did not have an easy road as Schatz moved forward early and then began challenging the Watertown, Conn.-native for the lead. Through lapped traffic, Schatz closed the distance and then battled by Gravel. Gravel kept up the pressure though and, the next lap by, was in position when Schatz bobbled on the cushion. He took back the top spot and held off challenges through the end of the 40-lap feature.

“Donny is really good – Dale (Blaney) and Donny at this type of race track,” Schatz said. “I tried to keep my pace up as good as I can but it got harder and harder and harder to run. When Donny showed his nose there and passed me, I got the wing back and tried a different line down the back stretch and was able to get underneath him and slide him back and slide a lapped car. That was the winning move there really.”

Eldora Speedway Crowns King Donny XXXIII at Kings Royal

Schatz scores his third Kings Royal title and 15th World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory of the year

ROSSBURG, Ohio – July 16, 2016 – It has been nearly a decade since he last stood in victory lane at the Kings Royal, but Donny Schatz looked like a natural as he was crowned King Donny XXXIII – his third Kings Royal title since 2007 – on Saturdaynight at Eldora Speedway.

Schatz who drew number 15 in the qualifying pill draw and was looking to get his 15th World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series victory of the season had the luck on his side, he just needed the hard work to push him through – and that’s exactly what he and his team did.

“This is unbelievable,” Schatz said. “It’s been a challenge here all weekend and it’s one of them places, we felt like we’ve been good at the Royal and we’ve maybe just done the wrong things. But not tonight. We were awesome all night. These guys got the car qualified well, got through the Heat, the car was awesome in the Heat races. It’s such a blast.”

Saturday’s tradition of $50,000-to-win and the pomp and circumstance that surrounds racing’s most unique victory remains untouched – but that is the only position that does not see a major increase for 2016. Over half of the 40-lap Kings Royal finishers will earn double the money posted in previous years. Highlights include: 2nd) $20,000; 5th) $10,000; 10th) $5,000; 24th) $3,000 and the first non-transfer from the B-Feature will receive $2,000. All B-Feature and C-Feature positions received healthy increases as well.
Thursday’s “Jokers Wild” will pay $10,000 to the winner while Friday night’s “The Knight Before” has been increased to $12,000-to-win.
