Saturday, April 15, 2017, Lehighton, Pa; 2015 ATQMRA Champion Buddy Sload Parked the Colin Martin Spitfire 36 in Victory Lane at the ATQMRA’s season-opening race at Mahoning Valley Speedway. Heat Races were won by Sload and Kris Graver. Dave Gorbatuk was the highest finishing ACRO Engineering Rookie contender. A total of five 2017 rookie contenders were on hand at the opener. Next up for the ATQMRA is Wall Stadium on Saturday, April 29th for wingless racing on that track’s flat inner oval.

The front row of Joey Bailey and Jeff Kot took the green flag and charged into the first turn. Buddy Sload took advantage of his fourth starting position to sweep into the lead to be scored the race leader on lap one. The caution fell for Kyle Taraska on lap 2 when his mount lost power. The restart saw Sload shoot into the lead and open a gap when the race was slowed for the final time on lap 3 by a slowing Joey Payne III who would return to action.

Sload again launched into the lead and ran away and hid as Kris Graver worked his way into second on lap six from his 7th starting spot in the Janisch 48 that won the 2017 ATQMRA Championship. With the speed Graver showed in his heat race he was the odds-on favorite heading into the feature. His fast lap in the heat was nearly 4 tenths faster than the field. When he worked his way into second he set sail to reel Sload in. Graver couldn’t negotiate lapped traffic as efficiently as Sload and would have to settle for second.

Hirschman Looks to Continue Myrtle Beach Success

Matt Hirschman of Northampton, PA discounts his experience at Myrtle Beach (SC) Speedway ahead of Saturday’s NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour opener. He cited teams that privately tested or competed in a 50-lap Modified race last month, where he finished third. Hirschman has three consecutive podiums at Myrtle Beach.

“It’s not gonna be totally foreign to them,” Hirschman said. “But it’s a unique place and having raced there now a few times over the last year and a half certainly helps and we have won a race there which is always a boost of confidence.”

The tire wear at the half-mile oval is well known. Last month’s Modified race demonstrated conservation’s role with part of the field dropping back to preserve tires.

“There are abrasive tracks and then there’s Myrtle Beach. It’s hard to explain but it’s definitely the extreme on that end. It’s really unlike any other track I’ve run at.”

Janisch Takes Sixth win of 2016 at Mahoning Valley

Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic ATQMRA

Lehighton, Pa, September 10, 2016. — Matt Janisch of Nazareth, Pa won the American Three Quarter Midget Racing Association’s race at Mahoning Valley Speedway when he overtook race-long leader Buddy Sload following a restart with five laps remaining. This is Janisch’ sixth win of the season and second at Mahoning Valley making him the only TQ racer to win on Lehighton’s circular oval. Sload finished second with Jeff Kot rounding out the podium. Heat Races were won by Buddy Sload and Mike Tidaback. Unofficially Janisch’s win wraps up the championship heading into the ATQMRA’s last race of the season at Wall Stadium Next Saturday, September 17th. The ATQMRA has a pair of non-point open competition wingless indoor rules package races at Stafford Springs Speedway and the annual Turkey Derby at Wall.

The front Row of pole sitter Mike Glaser and Buddy Sload took the Green flag from starter Bobby Stull. Glaser won the drag race into turn 1 but Sload was able to carry the momentum around the outside to shoot into the lead exiting the second turn. Sload looked to be on a mission to be the first ATQMRA Racer not named Janisch or Sutton to earn a win in 2016 opening a significant gap on the field.

The first caution of the race would fall when Joey Payne III’s engine expired ending his night. Payne has been seemingly snakebitten all season long. He has put in a significant effort all season long to have his car prepared and at the track only to have most of his days end in frustration. This night at Mahoning was no different. Better days are ahead.

In an effort to help continue the momentum the ATQMRA has created in 2015 to carry over into the 2016 season the ATQMRA is waiving the membership fee for any team who wishes to compete in one of the remaining two races. Boardwalk Hall Wrap-up

Atlantic City, NJ — Erick Rudolph of Ransomville, NY took down the win in the 40 lap TQ Midget feature at Boardwalk Hall Saturday night. Ryan Flores of Davidson, NC came in second with Jimmy Blewett of Howell, NJ third, Andy Jankowiak of Tonawanda, NY fourth and Patrick Emerling of Orchard Park, NY rounding out the top five.

Emerling led the field to the green. Rudolph took the lead from Emerling on lap 27. Rudolph led the final 13 laps to take down the win. Rudolph won the TQ Midget championship for the overall indoor series. Rudolph and Flores were tied, but with Rudolph having a win at Trenton last month. “Three or four years ago, we were able to win this race and the championship all in one year,” Rudolph said. “Last couple of years we have been coming and we have been fast, but luck has not been on our side. This year things fell into place to get the championship and the win tonight. It’s real special.”

The cautions did not help Rudolph as he felt he was gaining on Emerling for the lead. “I was gaining on him (Emerling),”Rudolph said. “Then the yellow came out. I was stuck in second and third for a while. I was kind of getting a little impatient. I was able to set him (Emerling) up and make a move on him for the lead. I had to deal with him on the outside on restarts. He hung right in there. I don’t know what happened to him at the end. I thought we were going to finish 1-2.”

The TQ Midget that Rudolph won with on Saturday night has been sold.

Krachun Set for Busy Weekend at Ace, Hickory

NEMA Lites Rookie on Verge of Championship

Ryan Krachun of Neshanic Station, NJ, went NEMA Lites racing this season due to car count and a new challenge. The desire to race against 20-22 cars weekly compared to 8-12 at some USAC events brought the 16-year-old driver to race across New England this season for his father Mike Krachun.

“Our experience with NEMA has been great,” Krachun said. “They welcomed us with open arms. I was lucky enough to meet some great people. … The cars are a lot of fun and the racing is really good too. In NEMA we can go three, even four wide at some tracks where in other sanctions you really can’t do that and that’s what makes the NEMA Midget so much fun.

“And what’s also been great was how the full NEMA Midget drivers have mentored me like Randy Cabral. He’s taken me under his wing and he’s helped me a lot at some of the different tracks and he’s just been a great guy to me.”
