Thomas Takes Oval Nationals; Windom is USAC National Sprint Champ

Perris, California………Kevin Thomas, Jr. unloaded his racecar from his hauler last Wednesday night as the man to beat when practice began for the Budweiser “Oval Nationals” presented by All Coast Construction.
When the time came to roll his car back into the hauler following Saturday night’s 40-lap main event, the Cullman, Alabama was a richer man – by $25,000 – and had the hardware to show for it after scoring the victory in the 22nd annual event at Perris Auto Speedway.
Meanwhile, Chris Windom emerged as USAC’s newest AMSOIL National Sprint Car champion, defeating Justin Grant by a mere six points to earn his first series title just one year after capturing the Silver Crown championship.  It was in late August that Windom found himself trailing Grant by 93 points and firmly believed his championship dreams had been dashed.

Tmez Drifts West for Western World & Ovals

After all, Thomas Meseraull will indeed be heading west when the USAC AMSOIL National and CRA Sprint Cars stop at Arizona Speedway and Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway during the month of November for the 2017 season finales.

The San Jose, California native has been named as the driver of the Reinbold/Underwood Motorsports No. 19 for the Nov. 3-4 “Western World Championships” at Arizona and the Nov. 9-10-11 Budweiser “Oval Nationals” presented by All Coast Construction at Perris.

Meseraull hasn’t had any prior experience for the Reinbold/Underwood team, but this fact hasn’t deterred his success of late as evidenced by what he’s accomplished this season. Meseraull has earned six series wins since 2015, including a pair this season for two different teams. In June, Meseraull was victorious in his second start for the Heffner Racing team during the Eastern Storm trip to Pennsylvania’s Lincoln Speedway. One month later in his USAC debut for Chase Briscoe Racing, Meseraull captured the victory in the Indiana Sprint Week opener at Kokomo Speedway. In fact, Meseraull has driven five different teams to top-five finishes with USAC this season alone!

Gravel Leads Green-to-Checker for Third Win of 2017 Season

Sweet and Haudenschild round out top-three at Perris Auto Speedway

PERRIS, CA – April 1, 2017 – David Gravel was the driver to beat at Perris Auto Speedway for the SoCal Showdown bringing an end the spring California swing. As the track rubbered-up, Gravel was in the ideal position, out front. Running mainly the high-lane around the half-mile oval, Gravel was able to pull away on multiple restarts to take home his third victory of the season.

“I’m happy I got the jump on the restarts and got the lead to manipulate the race for yourself,” said the driver of the No. 5 CJB Motorsports GoMuddy.com machine. “Just happy to get another win, this is definitely huge, this the most wins I’ve had this early in the season. Not that it takes the pressure off but you just want to keep it rolling.”

A top-five qualifying effort, a heat-race win, and a second in the Craftsman Club Dash, allowed for Gravel to start on the front row of tonight’s 30-lap Feature. The driver that started the SoCal Showdown from the pole was California-native, Brad Sweet. With Gravel checking-out on the initial start, Sweet had his hands full fending off the rookie-of-the-year contender, Sheldon Haudenschild for the second position. A red flag was displayed on Lap 10 when the No. 2x of Parker Price-Miller went for a tumble in Turn 2; Price-Miller walked away unscathed.

Tony Stewart Racing: Donny Schatz World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series California Spring Tour Finale Advance

DONNY SCHATZ
California Outlaw Swing: From Surviving It to Dominating It

INDIANAPOLIS (March 29, 2017) – One sign of a champion is the ability to transform a perceived weakness into a tangible strength. For most of his 20-plus seasons of competing in the World of Outlaws (WoO) Craftsman Sprint Car Series, Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing’s (TSR) Donny Schatz has been classified as a slow starter because he didn’t typically begin piling up victories until late May. That changed two seasons ago when he and his TSR team flipped the script and turned the Outlaws’ annual California Spring Tour from simply being about survival to domination.

Since 2009, Schatz has competed regularly in California early each Outlaw campaign and, the first six of those seasons, he captured two wins in 30 starts. In 2015 and 2016, Schatz has won seven times in 19 starts and already has picked up one victory on California soil this season in three starts. This week, he’ll look to add to those numbers beginning with Wednesday’s Placerville Short Track Outlaw Showdown presented by NAPA Auto Parts. The Kings Outlaw Shootout at Keller Auto Speedway in Hanford Friday and the SoCal Showdown at Perris Auto Speedway Saturday evening caps this year’s six-race run through the Golden State.

Prior to the 2015 WoO campaign, one of the goals for TSR’s No. 15 team was to get better at the places it struggled. Getting through California each March seemed to be one of the tougher tasks of the season. The team went to work after winning the 2014 WoO championship and the results followed.

This Saturday, April 1st, history will be made for the fourth time as the AMSOIL USAC/CRA and World of Outlaw Craftsman Sprint Cars share the spotlight at Perris Auto Speedway. Also featuring the PAS Senior and Young Gun Sprint Cars, the “So Cal Showdown” is also a “Power of Purple Night” Benefiting the City of Perris Relay For Life and The American Cancer Society. Advance tickets with a FREE World of Outlaws “Fan Pit Pass” are available online at www.wooperrisautospeedway.com or by calling 844.347.8849. The spectator gates will open at 4:00 pm and racing at “America’s Premier Dirt Track” will start at 7:00 pm. For more event information, visit the track’s website at www.perrisautospeedway.com or call 951.940.0134.

The “So Cal Showdown” has become one of the “must see” races on the AMSOIL USAC/CRA schedule. Featuring both non-winged and winged 410 cubic inch powered sprint cars, fans can enjoy both styles of racing at one of the finest dirt tracks in the country. “The Demon” Damion Gardner won the inaugural event on April 12, 2014, and Richard Vander Weerd dominated the following year. Last season, Josh Hodges claimed the checkered flags with a dramatic last corner pass over Gardner, Brody Roa, Vander Weerd, and R.J. Johnson. At press time, “The Demon” leads all drivers with 40 Perris USAC/CRA victories and Nic Faas set the 1-lap qualifying record of 15.833 on February 25, 2012. A complete series win list at Perris Auto Speedway is at the end of this release.

Entering the second point race, “The Demon” Damion Gardner (Concord, California) has a slim three-point lead over the competition. Darland Dodges Trouble to Win 73rd “Turkey Night Grand Prix”

Perris, California — Dave Darland added to his legacy and joined select company in Thursday night’s 73rd “Turkey Night Grand Prix” at Perris Auto Speedway. The Lincoln, Indiana veteran avoided a late-race mishap for leader Damion Gardner to win the 98-lap classic and join Mel Kenyon and Stan Fox as the only drivers to win the Thanksgiving race on both dirt and pavement.

Darland took the lead a lap after halfway but appeared to be headed for a runner-up finish until Gardner lost a left-rear wheel on lap 95. He maneuvered the final four circuits unchallenged and won by .823-seconds in the Keith Ford-owned King Racing Products – A&A Precision Machine #73 Ellis/Fontana.

“It was definitely a roller-coaster race. Gardner was definitely strong, and it looked like he had it won. We were lucky to get past him when he broke and it was the break we needed. It’s great to win this race on dirt after winning it before on pavement. I’ve had a great time running for Keith & Josh Ford and their crew chief Jimmy May, so I’m happy to get them their first Turkey Night win. This place has been pretty good to me,” Darland said.
