Timing Is Everything For SK Modifieds At CARQUEST Spring Sizzler

Stafford Springs, CT —  For the first time since their inception in 1982, SK Modifieds will qualify via time trials at the 27th annual CARQUEST Spring Sizzler slated for Saturday and Sunday, April 25th and 26th.“The SK Modified division is a training ground for the touring divisions of NASCAR, such as the Featherlite Modified Series and Busch North Series,” states Dan Pardi, Stafford’s Competition Director. “Qualifying through time trials is the norm in the upper divisions of NASCAR. Allowing our SK Modified drivers this opportunity will only improve their skills as their careers advance.”

Similar to their cousins on the NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series, the SK Modifieds will attempt a two-lap qualification run on Saturday, April 25th sponsored by Atlantic Coast Trailer Sales (1/888-414-2287) of Charlton, MA.

“Qualifying is an art,” remarks Ken Barry, who made his Modified Series debut in last year’s CARQUEST 300. “We were one of the fastest cars in practice, but when it came time to time trial my lack of experience was evident. I didn’t qualify.”

Barry, who competes weekly in the Manchester Racing Engines Monte Carlo, is in strong support of the decision to time trial for the Sizzler.

“It’s a great idea,” says Barry. “Those of us who desire to move on in NASCAR need to master the skill of time trials. Allowing us this opportunity reinforces Stafford’s commitment to this division.”

Adding to Stafford’s decision to enact time trials as the primary method of qualifying is the historic absence of a handicapping system at the CARQUEST Spring Sizzler.

“Because it is the first event of the year, we have no basis for our handicapping equation. We have never used handicapping at the Sizzler,” relays Pardi. “Time trials will allow an equal and fair chance for all SK competitors to solidify a top starting position.”

“I’m excited about having the opportunity to time trial,” says 1998 SK Modified championship hopeful, Curt Brainard. “It’s a professional move and I applaud it.”

Qualifying for the CARQUEST Spring Sizzler will begin promptly at 1:00PM on Saturday, April 25th and will be immediately followed by the Dare Stock and New England Legends Tour feature events. Sizzler Sunday commences at 11:00AM April 26th with the popular CARQUEST Pit Party followed by the first of five feature events. The NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series 200 lapper will get the green flag at 3:15PM.

Tickets for The Greatest Race in the History of Spring are now on sale by calling the Stafford Box-office at (860/684-2783).
