NEMA Veteran Fornoro Visits Victory Lane at Waterford

nokiewaterford.jpgWaterford, CT — Nokie Fornoro of Stroudsburg, PA, scored his first feature win of the season in Northeastern Midget Association (NEMA) competition in the 25-lapper at the Waterford Speedbowl in Waterford, CT, on Saturday night. Fornoro became the sixth different winner in six races in the highly competitive series. This was Fornoro’s fourth win at the shoreline oval, ending a winless streak at the facility that dates back to 1985.

The 25-lap event took only 6 minutes, 8 seconds from green to checker; setting a new record for the Waterford Speedbowl. It may have been quick, but every second of the caution-free feature event was action-packed.

Lia In The Right Place To Grab Riverhead Victory

donnyliamillerlite140.jpgRiverhead, NY — Donny Lia’s storybook season continued Saturday night, with the latest chapter an improbable victory at Riverhead (N.Y.) Raceway. The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour points leader inherited the lead when the top two cars were involved in a wreck in the closing laps and led the final six laps of the Miller Lite 140 en route to his fifth victory in eight races.

Lia was running third when Mike Stefanik and Ted Christopher were involved in an accident battling for the lead in the midst of lapped traffic.

Darling Claims Fifth Seekonk Pro Stock Win; Stretches Point Lead

Seekonk, MA — Defending track champion and current point leader David Darling of Rehoboth, MA extended his lead atop the standings by claiming his fifth victory of the season Saturday in the 40-lap Pro Stock feature at Seekonk Speedway. Darling started 11th in the field and raced his way to the front via the outside groove in the caution-free event, passing David Hutchins of Somerset, MA on the white flag lap en route to his 24th career win at the 1/3-mile Route 6 oval.

Hutchins started on the pole opened up a substantial lead on John Dabrowski, Scott Dion, Scott Fournier, and Matt Hudon in the first dozen laps. At the halfway point, Dean Pettey had reached fifth, with Kenny Spencer, Rob Murphy, and Darling comprising the balance of the top eight. Fournier slapped the frontretch wall the next time around, ending his bid for a strong finish, while Darling motored past Murphy on the outside at lap 25. Spencer was black-flagged for a fuel leak on lap 32 and Hudon faded in the final 10 circuits after getting tangled up with another car and scraping the concrete.

Sanborn Hopes that Atlantic CAT 250 Can Be His First Career PASS North Victory

passnorth.jpgNaples, ME — A pair of close runner-up finishes, a third, a solid fourth-place run and a race where he might have had the fastest car, but got sidelined by some trouble. That is the kind of record that you might expect a veteran racer to have in their last five touring events.

But that is actually what Pro All Stars Series North Super Late Model rookie Trevor Sanborn has accomplished in his last five starts on the Tour. However, one thing is absent from that list and Sanborn is well aware of that. Despite being one of the contenders for victory week-in and week-out, the pieces have not come together for Sanborn to take his #29 Cushman Competition Ford to victory lane yet, but he is hoping for that to change on August 11th in the Atlantic CAT 250 at Scotia Speedworld near Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Vacation Time

It is that time of year when we traditionally take a vacation. The Whelen Modified Tour has had plenty of time over the last month to take some time off and relax. The Grand National Busch East Series has a few weeks before their next race at Lime Rock. We all need to take some time off. What do you have planned for your summer vacation? Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Ahhhhh, summertime, brings back memories of when I was a kid. We ruled the world, went where we wanted, when we wanted and stayed as long as we wanted. As long as we had our bikes we were free. No school, no homework, free to do anything we wanted. For me growing up vacation time was the entire summer. I lived in a neighborhood with enough kids that there was always something going on. We had enough kids to play baseball, so you could always find someone or something to do.

Marvin Rolls in Sunoco Mods at Thompson

tislogo2.jpgThompson, CT — The hot and steamy weather was equaled only by the action on the track at Thompson International Speedway on Thursday night. Bert Marvin of Waterford made a strong statement returning to competition in style by dominating the Sunoco Modified main event. Steve Michalski of Dayville won post-race tech to earn his first victory of the season in the Mini Stock 25-lapper. Fred Astle of N. Westport, MA, scored his long-awaited first win of the 2007 season. Mark Jenison of Danielson continues his impressive 2007 season with his fourth Late Model victory. Kurt Vigeant of Oxford was tops in the TIS Modified division while Ernie LaRose of Plainfield checkered the Limited Sportsman main.

After a one-week hiatus, Bert Marvin came back to Thompson with a vengeance. The veteran grabbed the lead early in the race and went on to dominate the 30-lap feature. On the opening lap, Kerry Malone dove to the inside of a side-by-side battle between pole sitter Dave Salzarulo and Josh Steeves to make it three-wide for the lead. Malone could not keep up his momentum and fell back to third. Marvin meanwhile appeared to be on rails, easily driving to the lead on lap three.
