Big Y ‘Back to School Bash’ Provides Thrills
The Bob Valenti Auto Mall Speedway Bowling Tournament pitted Middletown’s Brad & Lisa Voglesong against Trumbull’s Duane Noll and Rick Whittle of Mystic. In the final tally, “Out Of Control” Duane Noll and “Sick Rick” Whittle proved to be consummate professionals in the sport of auto-bowling (a Speedbowl original), soundly defeating Team Volglesong in the final round.
In the Hilltop Marine Boat Race, it was none other than Middletown’s “Bad Brad” Voglesong in the winner’s circle, taking the victory over a swerving pack of speedway land yachts.
Coming out on top in the thrilling carnage of the Speedbowl’s first-ever School Bus Trailer Race, it was “Sick Rick” Whittle of Mystic. Several camper trailers met their untimely demise in the action-packed spectacle.
Old Lyme’s Dave Macintosh made it a clean sweep (a Speedbowl first), in defeating a full field of crash-crazies in both the 4 and 8-cylinder demolition derbies presented by Deans Auto Recycling.
Macintosh also took top honors in the “Best Appearing Car Award” for the 4-cylinder demo class, while it was Tim Dubois of Uxbridge, MA. getting the nod in the 8-cylinders. For their efforts, both received $50.00 gift certificates provided by the Crystal Mall as well as trophies.
Concluding the evening’s action, a bevy of buses were ravaged beyond recognition (much to the delight of the students in attendance), in the School Bus Demo Derby. When the sparks subsided and the dust settled, it was “Super Mark” Cooper of Northford getting the best of his adversaries.
Throughout the evening, Big Y World Class Markets awarded prizes to several lucky grandstand patrons.
