Chasing Miller Starts At Caraway

The biggest question heading into the 2008 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour season is really rather simple. Can anybody dethrone champion L.W. Miller?

To do so, they’ll need to find a way to beat Miller at Caraway Speedway. The 34-year-old from Duchore, Penn. dominated the .455-mile oval in Asheboro, N.C.. He overcame a late-race flat tire to win the season opener and posted three more wins and a fifth-place.

This year, Caraway will host six of the tour’s 12 events, beginning with the season opener Saturday night.

Miller won five races overall last year en route to taking title by only 25 points over Tim Brown, who has finished a close second in the final driver standings the last two seasons.

Not satisfied with a fifth-place finish in last year’s final Whelen Southern Modified Tour standings, Junior Miller and team owner Jeff Riggs sat down and decided a change was needed for each parties. Junior Miller left to start his own team in 2008. Enter 20 year-old Hampstead, N.H. driver Andy Seuss who is taking over the seat vacated by the two-time NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour champion.

Burt Myers should also be a serious threat to win his first NASCAR championship. He won at Bowman-Gray Stadium in August en route to a third-place finish in the final standings. Myers also posted the fastest qualifying time six times, including the first five events of the season. Younger brother Jason Myers also hopes to factor into this year’s championship battle coming off a season of bad luck in 2007.

Two drivers who hope for big things in 2008 are Brian Loftin and Frank Fleming, both of who had outstanding seasons last year but are looking to improve even more. In the final two races of last season, Loftin earned both the pole and the victory. He wound up 12th in points because he did not compete in three events. Fleming, seventh in points, finished in the top three in the final four races of the season.
