The 11-Seconds Lap On The Horizon
Waterford, CT — International Super Modified Association President Howie Lane has not backed off his belief that an 11 second lap is in Waterford Speedbowl’s future. Obviously, Lane believes it will be a Super Modified doing it.
The Supers return to the Speedbowl Saturday night, Aug. 16 as part of the Racing Against Cancer Wings & Wheels Presented by Foxwoods and Kool 101. The 50-lap ISMA feature is part of an agenda that also includes a 100-lap True Value Modified Series feature, a 25-lapper for the Northeastern Midget Association and a 35-lapper for the SK-Modifieds.
Lane acknowledges things need be “perfect” for such an effort. Still, the technology and talent in ISMA and the grip in the Speedbowl asphalt are there. Chris Perley flirted with it last May when he turned a 12.489 seconds (107-mph plus) lap. Rob Summers, Jeff Holbrook, Russ Wood, Dave McKnight, Mike Ordway Jr. and Mike Lichty other possibilities.
Considering the cause – Racing Against Cancer gets $2 for every ticket sold – Lane believes Wings & Wheels will be a perfect time to “get it done.”
Racers, especially the open-wheel variety, see existing lap records as challenges. NEMA and the “True Values” will come in charged up looking to lower existing records of 12.848 by NEMA’s Randy Cabral and 14.075 by TVMS veteran Dwight Jarvis’ 14.075 lap. A 13 second lap would be a big feather in the TVMS cap. The later two standards were set earlier this year as well.
All four divisions will qualify via heats meaning the laps are caught by electronic scoring during competition.
