Randy Moretti Picks Up first Pure Stock Victory. Jake Stergios Wins NEMA Lites, While Carl Medeiros Jr and Dylan Estrella Repeat
Seekonk, MA — As the 2008 season starts to wind down, the action is a hot and heavy as it has been all year. In the 25 lap Pure Stock feature, Randy Moretti of West Warwick RI picked up his first career win. Joe Carpenter led the first laps, until Moretti looked to the outside and took the lead on lap five. The lead wouldn’t last long, as Carpenter slid up the racetrack in his Local 51 Plumbers & Pipefitters Chevy, allowing CJ Mello to make a run to the inside. And take the lead at lap six. Carlos Silva slid up the inside lane and took over second. At the ten lap mark, the top five were Mello, Silva, Moretti, Scott Cestodio and Bob Hinckley.
Hinckley, Moretti and Cestodio battled three wide for third for two laps, with Cestodio getting the slight advantage. The first caution came out on lap 14, when Steve Sipione spun in turn four, and was hit by John Frias. The top five at this point were Mello, Silva, Moretti, Cestodio and Hinckley.
Back under green, Silva was giving Mello fits, as the pair races wheel to wheel for the lead. Silva edged out front at lap 15, and was setting the pace on the outside lane. After leading for three laps, Cestodio took a lead to the outside in a three wide bid for the lead. And here came the Ray Thibeault Home Improvement Buick, as he moved to the inside and made the battle for the lead FOUR WIDE. With six laps left, Moretti took over the lead, with Hinckley following through on the inside. On Lap 21, the second caution came out when Jeremy Lambert lost a right front tire.
Once back up to speed, Moretti would not look back, as he pulled away from Bob Hinckley, John Robidoux, Mello and Cestodio to pick up his first career Pure Stock Victory. The rest of the top five was Hinckley, Robidoux, Cestodio and reigning champion Bill Chouinard.
The NEMA Lites made their first solo appearance at the Action Track of the East on Friday Night and Jake Stergios turned in the fastest laps on his way to the win. Leading all 20 laps from the pole, Stergios picked up his first career NEMA Lite victory over Will Wall, PJ Stergios, Russ Wood Jr and Shawn Torrey.
Dylan Estrella picked up his second checkered flag in the Seekonk Youth Racing Association 750 class, Dylan started sixth and used the outside lane to pick his way through the field. Chris Igo Jr picked up the early lead from his pole starting position, and set the pace for the first several laps, until Estrella put his Lamar & Son’s #46 into the lead.
Once Estrella was out front, Igo had his hands fill with Matt Burke and Casey Sanchez, as the trio fought for the second position. Championship points leader Derryk Anderson Jr started fourth on the field, but would not challenge for the lead. Jacob Swift struggled in his Crystal Ice mount, spinning a couple of times in the qualifier and in the 25 lap feature.
In the 25 lap SYRA 600 feature, it was win number four for Carl Medeiros Jr. Carl started fourth on the grid, and quickly moved into the lead. The first caution came out before a lap was complete, as Dave Hutchens spun his Hutchens & Son’s Enterprises #96. Carl moved quickly into the lead, and started to pull away from Fairhaven’s Adam Swift, who ran second early on. By the halfway point, Hutchens was back into the top three. Championship points leader Jake Spillers ran in the top five for the entire even, finishing third. In the end, it was the Nu-Way Auto machine of Medeiros dominating this event, with Hutchens, Spillers. Adam Swift and Jason Enos II rounding out the top five.
Each week, Duraflex Race Car Bodies awards a $50.00 savings bond to one SYRA competitor. This weeks recipient is Jacob Swift, as he struggled throughout the night, but his determination helped him to an eighth place finish in the SYRA 750 feature.
With only two weeks left in the Fast Friday Series, the point chases are starting to clear up. Scott Cestodio leads the charge in the Pure Stocks, while Jake Spillers and Derryk Anderson Jr sit atop the standings in the SYRA classes.
