‘Faster Pastor’ Event On ‘Bowl Agenda
Waterford, CT — Deciding who is the area’s “Faster Pastor” has become part of Waterford Speedbowl’s role in recent years. It will do it again this weekend on “Whelen Night.” It will be the final 2008 Saturday night show at the shoreline oval.
A SK-Modified 35-lapper tops the racing with the Late Models (30 lap feature), Mini Stocks (20), Sportsman (20) and X-Cars (20) taking part as well. It will be the final tune-up for the Whelen All-American Series divisions – SKs, Late Models, Sportsman and Minis – before the season-ending “Finale” Oct. 4-5.
The gates open at 4 PM and racing begins at 5.
The SK point race is far from settled, Dennis Gada 12-up on Rob Janvoic Jr. and 18 better than last week’s winner Keith Rocco. Gada, chasing a record seventh championship, will be looking for all the momentum he can get heading into the Finale 100 lapper.
Several pastors have accepted the challenge. They’ll climb into X-Cars and determine who’ll carry the “faster pastor” honor for another year.
Whelen Engineering’s special demonstration car will also be present.
Just how many 2008 winners will come out of the regular Saturday night divisions this year? Kyle James’ Mini Stock success last week pushed it to a record 43, clearly making the Speedbowl one of the most competitive spots anywhere. A number of drivers have been very close and hope to join the list Saturday night
While championship battles have waned – Bruce Thomas Jr. (Late Models) and Al Stone III (Sportsman) can both clinch Saturday night – the battles for coveted top five point finishes remain hot in all divisions. It goes nine deep in the Sportsman division, seven deep in the Mini Stocks.
Champion Brad Voglesong and Patrick Williams, one-two in the final Wild N’ Wacky Wednesday standings, will lead the X-Cars into still another Saturday night opportunity.
