Smacktoberfest A Smashing Success !!!!

Waterford, CT — Large in numbers, it was a hearty crowd of thrill-seekers converging on the shoreline oval Sunday afternoon to witness the annual Bowl’ tradition known as “Smacktoberfest”.

First on the agenda was the ever-popular “Ski Race”. Several crazies took to the tarmac armed with “skis” mounted rearward rather than a more traditional (and one could argue sane) set of tires. After several circuits of smoking, swirling directional mayhem, it was a familiar face entering victory lane. Former Saturday night Late Model racer Jeff Karns topped the field, showing all that his talents are not just limited to the more “traditional” of Bowl’ divisions. Snaring second-banana honors was Wild N’ Wacky Wednesday X-Car hotshot Patrick Williams.

In the Reverse Race, Joseph Crue navigated the circuit with the most “backward ability”, his big Ford sedan handily weaving and bobbing through a smattering of bulbous and ill-handling land yachts.

Tire Relay Race competition saw the duo of Patrick Williams and Richard Hurne prove their superiority over the other “tire-pushing” combatants, capturing the affair by a healthy margin.

Pre-event Demo festivities had “Wild Bill” Horan presented the “Best Appearing Car” award in the 8-cylinders. Bob Onrofio bested the 4-cyliner class.

The Speedbowl’s version of a Pro Bowlers Association event (Speedway Bowling), was annexed by the formative team of Jeff Karns and Richard Hurne.

When the smoke and debris cleared in the 4-cylinder Demolition Derby, it was Mike Sabia prevailing in a station wagon nicely squashed beyond recognition. The 8-cylinder havoc saw Dave French in a Chevy Corsica come home the winner.

In what was quite possibly the largest-ever Trailer Race field, Joe Lee and “Sick Rick” Whittle battled right down to the nitty-gritty with Lee finally getting the better of the foreboding-looking black Limousine piloted by Whittle.
