Bill Davis Captures 2008 Limited Late Model Championship for First Career Stafford Track Title
Stafford Springs, CT — After two seasons of contending for the Stafford Motor Speedway Limited Late Model championship but coming up short at season’s end, Bill Davis and the #06 Shop Tech Software team proved that the third time is the charm, taking the 2008 championship by a 22-point margin over the 2007 champion, Sean Foster.
Davis opened the 2008 season in grand style with a victory at the CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler and he used the momentum from that victory to lead the points standings for all but one week of the year.
“We started the year out good at the Spring Sizzler and we were able to carry that momentum through to the end of the season,” said Davis. “We ran good all year long and we didn’t have any mechanical failures. There was one race where we had a flat tire with about five laps to go and another race we had a couple plug wires go bad, but we managed to get decent finishes both times so we didn’t end up losing a lot of points those nights. We had a lot of luck on our side this year.”
The championship is a first for both Davis and his car owners, George Wells and Phil Hutchinson.
“It is really nice to be able to win a championship at Stafford Speedway,” said Davis. “George gave us everything we needed all year long, and everyone on the team put a good amount of time and energy into the car this year, so winning this championship is very rewarding not only for myself, but for George, Shop Tech, and everyone on the crew.”
Davis and Foster ran neck and neck for the championship right from the start of the season, with Foster staying only a few points behind Davis. Foster took the points lead from Davis following the June 13th event, but lost the point lead to Davis the following week and fell further behind Davis with an 18th place finish on June 27th. Foster scored 6 podium finishes over the last seven events of the 2008 season, but he was unable to fully erase the point deficit as Davis and his team’s consistency kept them at the front of the points standings.
“We didn’t try to be conservative this year, but around halfway through the year we knew if we stayed out of trouble that we had a pretty good shot at winning the championship,” said Davis. “I raced all the guys out there clean and they raced me clean, so I have to thank all of my fellow competitors. We’re going to come back next season with the same car and same crew and try to do the best we can every week and try to win more races than we did this season.”
Davis will officially be crowned the 2008 Limited Late Model track champion at the 39th Stafford Motor Speedway Champions Awards Ceremony on Friday, November 14, 2008 at the La Renaissance Banquet Facility in East Windsor.
