Bobby Grigas III and his Team Start to Turn Things Around with a Top-Ten Finish at Thompson
Mod Tour Pilot Finishes Eighth in Thursday Night Race
Marshfield, MA — 2009 has been a tough season for Bobby Grigas III so far on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. If there is a car that has spun, it has likely been right in front of him. If there is a part that breaks, it has usually been on his car. About the only thing that hasn’t happened to him yet has been to have a lightning bolt come out of the sky to slow down the #09 Modified.
However, Grigas and his team are starting to turn their luck around. First, they posted a solid finish of 15th in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race at Bristol Motor Speedway. Then, on Thursday night, they notched an eighth-place result at Thompson International Speedway (CT).
“We cut our 15th-place finish from Bristol in half and now, in our next race at New Hampshire, we will hopefully be able to cut this eighth-place finish in half and keep going on from here,” said Grigas. “We’re making big strides forward and not backwards. I’ve really got to thank my Mom and Dad for sticking with me this year and my entire crew, too. They put in so much hard work, and at Thompson the team and my spotter helped me so much. They coached me through the whole race and kept me going.”
Grigas did a good job, too, of keeping himself going after a big wreck brought out a red flag midway through the race.
“There was a big wreck on the backstretch,” said Grigas. “I was the first car behind it when it started. I saw a car start to spin and I tried to avoid it. I skidded through the lawn and got caught in it a little bit, but it didn’t take us out of the race. In the first half of the season, it would have taken us out. Every time this year that there has been a big wreck, I’ve been right in the middle of it.”
Grigas kept moving ahead after the incident. He got into the top five even before the race’s final restart and eventually finished eighth.
“We had a good racecar at Thompson,” said Grigas. “It wasn’t great, but the team kept trying to make it better and they did. I drove the wheels off it, too. I was looking at a top-five finish, but on the last restart I spun the tires. I hadn’t done that all day long, so it surprised me. I’ll take the blame for finishing eighth, but I’m happy to be able to say that rather than to have to explain how something broke again. This was a good race for us.”
The next race for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will take place at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on September 19th.
