A Young Gun Wins Third Annual Slick 50 300
The early 1990’s in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series was dominated by Dale Earnhardt, Rusty Wallace, Ricky Rudd, and Bill Elliott, until 1995 when a young driver by the name of Jeff Gordon emerged as the next big thing.
Fresh off a win at Daytona, Gordon was ready to take on New Hampshire Motor Speedway in just his third career start at the “Magic Mile.”
Driving the No. 24 Dupont Chevrolet Monte Carlo owned by Rick Hendrick, Gordon qualified 21st at the speed of 127.355 mph. With great pit strategy the Rainbow Warriors were able to get Jeff to the front of the pack where he would lead 124 of 300 laps giving Chevrolet their first win at NHMS.
“We are used to starting up front, and it takes a lot of team confidence to come from behind like that, Jeff Gordon said. That was a big test for the team and myself, and we passed with flying colors. It was a really great race, it seemed like the faster we ran the better our car got,” said Jeff.
The win at New Hampshire was Gordon’s fifth of the season. He would later go on and become the second-youngest championship winner in NASCAR’s elite series, where he would beat out seven time Cup winner Dale Earnhardt, to prove he was in fact NASCAR’s newest star.
