Sunoco Modifieds Face 50-Lap Main Event on Thursday

Thompson, CT — Thompson Speedway’s Sunoco Modifieds, the track’s premier NASCAR division, will compete in their longest race of the season this Thursday night. The annual 50-lap event is, to many, the highlight of their season. Fans and competitors alike look forward to this race due to the traditional excitement that surrounds it and the incredible competition displayed weekly from these ultra-fast, open wheel racers.

Current points leader, Ted Christopher, will go into the 50-lap event with a slim 36 point advantage over Rowan Pennink. Pennink finds himself a mere 10 points ahead of third place Keith Rocco and Rocco’s advantage over 4th place Ronnie Silk is only 12 points. Woody Pitkat rounds out the top five in the current points standings and is only 100 points behind the leader.

With so much on the line for these drivers, Thursday’s race becomes a very important even. Fifty points are awarded to the winner and a bad night for anyone in the top five could seriously change the race for the track championship trophy and the points fund money that goes with the title.

The Sunoco Modifieds will be joined by the five NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions that, along with the Sunoco Modifieds, make up the weekly Thursday Night Thompson Thunder race program. The Limited Sportsman division and the Thompson Modifieds have already run their extra distance races with Shawn Monahan claiming victory in the Limited Sportsman outing and Brian Sullivan entering victory lane for the Thompson Modifieds.

Grandstand will open at 4:30 PM and qualifying races will get underway at 6 PM. Feature event racing will begin about 45 minutes later. The entire evenings proposed schedule is posted on the track’s web page. www.thompsonspeedway.com

The action continues next week, July 22nd, when the powerful Pro All Star Series (PASS) cars come to Thompson for their annual 75-lap race. The very best drivers in this popular touring series will be on hand for what has always been an exciting night at the Thompson oval.
