Flannery back in Legends Car Victory Lane; Sowa, Yagmin, and Thomas repeat winners
Waterford, CT — A quick paced Wild ‘n Wacky program was completed at the Speedbowl Wednesday evening. Just two caution flags slowed an entire race program that saw sixteen year-old Anthony Flannery of East Hampton continue his dominance in the Legends Cars division. John Yagmin of Tolland was a repeat winner in Super X-Car action while Glen Thomas Jr. of Groton returned to Victory Lane in the X-Cars to extend his points lead in the championship race. Nicholas Sowa of Middletown won his second straight Bandolero feature to round out the night’s winners.
A great caution-free 20-lap Legends Car event got started with Troy Talman and Flannery on the front row, with Flannery taking over on the first circuit. John Hilliker moved to second with last week’s winner Dennis Pantani holding third position over the opening laps. Hilliker was able to stick with Flannery at the front while David Garbo Jr. closed on Pantani for third. Garbo poked the nose of his car under Pantani on lap 7 and was able to make the pass in turn one to take over the spot.
The race stayed under green through halfway at lap 10 and Hilliker was still within two lengths of Flannery at the front. Garbo was a half straightaway back in third, as Pantani and Talman rounded out the top five. Hilliker pulled off a stellar move on lap 12. He ducked under a lapped car exiting turn four while Flannery went high, stealing the top spot with a heads up move.

Flannery regrouped over the next two laps, using an inside move on Hilliker to take back over on lap 15. Flannery reclaimed the lead as Hilliker’s car started to fade. He fell back into the grips of Garbo who was having a great run. Garbo slipped under Hilliker as the field raced to the white flag to take second.
Flannery went on to record his ninth win on Wild ‘n Wacky Wednesday but first since June 30 after starting the season with eight consecutive victories. Garbo finished a great race in second. Hilliker racked up the frequent flyer miles coming from Montana to finish third. Pantani nipped Talman at the line by inches in an exciting battle for fourth and fifth.
Jon Porter led the Super X-Car feature from his pole starting position, but it was John Yagmin on the move early. Yagmin raced through the top five and spent a lap behind Porter looking for a lane before he powered around the outside the leader on lap 7. Further behind Jim Boyle, Peter Pollard, Mike Maskell and Shawn Perkins all battled with little room between their machines. Caution waved on lap 8 when Ed Ryan’s car went up in smoke, littering the raceway with fluid.
Porter was able to use the outside land on the restart to take back the race lead. Yagmin slipped to second over Boyle, but a three wide battle for second heated up with Maskell momentarily taking that position before Yagmin charged back in the outside lane. Yagmin then took back over on lap 16 from Porter. Maskell then dove under Porter for second and those two battled for three laps before Maskell finally took the spot on the white flag lap.
Yagmin went on to the win over Maskell. Shawn Perkins claimed third over Porter on the final lap. James Consalvo rounded out the top five.
Jeremy Bourbeau raced to the early lead of the X-Car race, but Mike Marvin, Devin Widger, Glen Thomas and Brad Voglesong all made their way to the top five by lap 5 of the 20-lapper. The lead pack closed in on leader Bourbeau, with Marvin testing the low side. Marvin got out of shape exciting turn two on lap 7, giving Widger and Thomas opportunity to go three-wide for the second position with Marvin. Thomas used the high groove to prevail, closing in on Bourbeau and making a move to the bottom of the track to take the race lead one lap later.
Thomas moved out to a several car length lead, with Widger taking second and chasing down Thomas over the second half of a caution-free race. Lapped traffic did not slip Thomas up, but it did give Widger the chance to close within a car length as the race reached two laps remaining. Widger could get no closer however, and Thomas was back in victory lane for the fifth time of the year. Widger ran well for second, Marvin was third and Dan D’addario and Patrick Williams completed the top five.
Tyler Chalue led the first five laps of the 20-lap Bandolero race before Sowa moved outside to challenge the leader. Chalue fended off Sowa’s initial challenge, while Andrew Carpenter, Joey Ternullo and Taylor Martin raced into contention behind the leader. Ternullo ultimately took second with a three-wide maneuver before he ducked under Chalue for the lead off turn four on lap 8.
At halfway Ternullo led over Sowa while Ken Morin Jr. was third ahead of Carpenter and Chalue. Sowa went back underneath Ternullo for the lead on lap 11, bringing Morin to second. Sowa distanced himself from the field over the second half of the race to take his second straight win in the division.
