Modified Racing Series looks to continue stellar season at Wings ‘n Wheels
Waterford, CT — Waterford Speedbowl is always a homecoming of sorts for many of the stars in the Modified Racing Series. This Saturday, August 14th’s Wings ‘n Wheels event for the popular northeast Modifieds, sponsored by BobValentiAutoMall.com, proves no different. Several drivers with Speedbowl roots and experience will be on hand.
The ‘Bowl’s three-eighths mile, two groove racing surface offer a perfect battleground to wage what should be a 100-lap open-wheel war. Up until this year, the Modified Racing Series had eight different winners in all eight previous events held at the shoreline oval. Doug Coby of Milford, CT opened the 2010 MRS season with a win in the Speedbowl’s Budweiser Blastoff 100-lapper to become the Series’ first repeat winner at the ‘Bowl. In 11 events this year, a remarkable 10 different winners have reached Victory Lane.
This Saturday’s event should be wide-open. Local driver Ken Barry of Preston, CT is the most recent winner in the MRS, picking up the win at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Maine. He is an expected entry at Wings ‘n Wheels for legendary car owner and father Art Barry. Max Zachem, an up-and-comer also from Preston, is another expected and he brings the added experience of picking up checkered flags in the Legends Car division at the Speedbowl in his past.
Madison, CT native Mike Holdridge is coming off two top-five runs in the past two series events and still seeks his first win on the tour. Popular Lisbon, CT drivers Carl and Charlie Pasteryak are also on the list of hopefuls to make the Wings ‘n Wheels field. Jeff Malave of Manchester, CT, Geoffrey Gernhard of Salem, CT and Shelly Perry of Westerly, RI are other locals expected to be on hand.
Speedbowl fans will have some home track star power to root for in the field, as always. Standouts in the weekly SK Modified® battles at the ‘Bowl including Coby, Speedbowl points leader Keith Rocco of Wallingford, CT and Jeff Pearl of Salem, CT have plans to generate some home cooking in the 100-lap race.
Current Modified Racing Series points leader, veteran Dwight Jarvis from Ascutney, VT as well as the rest of the top-five in the standings Jon McKennedy (E. Chelmsford, MA), Les Hinckley (Windsor Locks, CT), Rowan Pennink (Huntingdon Valley, PA) and Steve Masse (Bellingham, MA) have all picked up series wins this year and should be in Saturday’s field.
The ISMA Supermodifieds (50-laps), NEMA Midgets (25-laps) and Speedbowl’s SK Modifieds® (35-laps) join the ground pounding Modified Racing Series for Wings ‘n Wheels. Racing gets started Saturday with qualifying at 5:00pm. Main events are scheduled to begin at 7:00pm. Pricing is set at $34 for adult grandstands admission with youth age 6-14 just $10. Kids 5 & under are free as always at the Speedbowl and the facility offers acres of free parking as well as overnight parking. For a detailed event schedule, visit Speedbowl.com.
