Stafford SK Light Modified Competitor Steve Greer Has Big Plans for 2011 Season

Stafford Springs, CT — Stafford Motor Speedway SK Light Modified driver Steve Greer has a big 2011 season planned for himself and his Gunsmoke Stables team. After a disappointing 2010 season that saw him race in only 11 of 21 races and a finish of 23rd place in the final points standings, Greer has announced that his team will switch their equipment from Raceworks to CD Chassis. Greer will also have two teammates for the 2011 season with drivers Earl Pelletier and Joey Cipriano and the R.F. Parker Motorsports team.

“We’re excited about this season and we’re itching to get going,” said Greer. “We were happy with the Raceworks car, but we wanted to see what we could do with a CD car. The 2010 season was definitely a little bit disappointing for us, but we’re looking to come back full-time this year. I’m really excited about working with Earl and Joey this year. It’s a mutually beneficial partnership with them. Earl is a great mechanic and Joey’s family is great at fabricating parts and pieces, so they help us out in those two areas and we are able to help them out sponsorshipwise with our Gunsmoke Stables.”

The SK Light division at Stafford won’t be the only place where Greer will be lending a helping hand this season. Greer will also supply Heather DesRochers with a spec engine as she looks to capture Reliable Welding and Speed Rookie of the Year honors in Stafford’s SK Modified® division this year.

“We’re also going to be helping Heather DesRochers out this season,” said Greer. “I have a spec engine from R.A.D. Automachine that was sitting around the shop and I’m not going to make the move up anytime soon, so we figured we’d help Heather out by letting them use that motor as they try to win Rookie of the Year this season.”

The 2011 season will be Greer’s second full season of competition in the SK Light Modified division. He finished 15th in his rookie season of 2009 with 3 top-10s and he matched his top-10 total last year, although he only competed in 11 races. In the spirit of change, the chassis isn’t the only thing that Greer will be changing for the 2011 season.

“We’re changing the car and we’ll have a new paint scheme,” said Greer. “We’re definitely looking to turn over a new leaf this season. I have to give a special thanks to Kevin Pierce, he stuck with me through a tough year last season. He’s a great friend and a great crew chief and we’re looking to turn our fortunes around this season. We started running in the top-10 towards the end of last year and I’m hoping to get into the top-5, but with Earl and Joey, they’re both championship caliber drivers and we’re hoping we can help them win the championship this season. We’re also hoping that we can help steer Heather towards winning Rookie of the Year in the SK’s and help Cal Chandonnet on Monday nights in the Wild Thing Karts.”

In order to achieve his top-5 goal, Greer will have to get to grips with a new car while still learning on the fly how to get around the track.

“It’s definitely going to be a new learning curve for me with the CD car and I’m still learning how to race,” said Greer. “Before I started racing in the SK Lights, I had never raced anything before. There are 15 year olds out there who have a ton more racing experience more than me. I got started as a sponsor with the Membrino’s and thought it would be fun to put a car together for myself. We’re out there to have some fun, if it stops being fun, then it’s not worth racing.”

Greer and his Gunsmoke Stables team will make their SK Light debuts at the season opening CARQUEST Tech-Net Spring Sizzler, scheduled for April 29-May 1. Joining the SK Lights will be Stafford’s SK Modifieds®, Late Models, Limited Late Models, and DARE Stocks. Headlining the weekend will be the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour with a 200-lap feature event.
