Garbo, Ternullo, Brouwer and Voglesong Take Down Repeat Wins on Season

Waterford, CT — Wild ‘n Wacky action returned to the Speedbowl Wednesday evening, dodging raindrops from Mother Nature and putting five winners in Victory Lane. Scoring wins on the night included Dave Garbo Jr. of Stonington in the Legends Cars, Joey Ternullo of Middletown won his fourth Bandolero feature on the year, John Brouwer Jr. of Groton took his second win in Super X-Car action and Brad Voglesong of Middletown won an entertaining extra-distance X-Car feature. Taking home the crown as king of the Musical Car Wacky Race was Dan Moon of Exeter, RI.

The 20-lap Legends Cars feature saw past track champion Jason Palmer move into the race lead past Carl Blandina on lap-1. Palmer led by nearly a full straightaway length by the time a caution flag was finally displayed on lap-10. Prior to the caution the action behind Palmer was very entertaining as a pack of cars raced for the top-five positions behind the leader. Blandina, Troy Talman, Angelo Belsito and Ed Field were the early leaders but Dana Dimatteo, Joey Mucciacciaro and Garbo were all in hot pursuit. By the time the caution was out for Nick Lascuola at halfway, Dimatteo was in second, Garbo third, and Mucciacciaro fourth.

Garbo was on a mission when racing resumed. He raced from third place past the inside of Dimatteo, then jumped to Palmer’s outside on lap-11. Dimatteo tried to assert himself under Garbo in turn one on lap-12, got loose and gathered his car back up. That left Garbo all alone to power outside Palmer for the race lead. Garbo drove around the leader, moving ahead until a caution waved on lap-14.

Garbo survived the lap-14 restart, then another on lap-18 to go on unchallenged to his third win in the past four weeks. Palmer got loose on the final restart, allowing Dimatteo to scoot by into second at the finish. Palmer was third, Mucciacciaro fourth and Dylan Izzo was fifth.

The Bandolero feature was intense from the start as Ternullo rocketed out to the race lead, but before a lap could be completed several cars came together exiting turn four including pole-sitter Andrew Molleur to bring out caution. The field raced tight again until lap-3 when a multi-car accident in turn one started when Derek Debbis spun with Corey Comeroski, collecting Jacob Urch and returning the race under yellow.

Ternullo again looked strong when the green flag was shown back over the field, moving out to a healthy lead for second position was waged among Cory Dimatteo, Ken Morin Jr., Jordan Lamothe, Rachel Forte and defending champion Taylor Martin. That packed swapped positions multiple times as Ternullo was comfortably ahead in the lead. Dimatteo lost control out of turn two, spinning from fourth position on lap-14 to draw the race’s third caution.

Ternullo had company on the restart in the form of Morin and Lamothe. Those two stayed with Ternullo the remainder of the way, swapping second position over the final lap three times. Ternullo took his fourth checkered flag on the season, while Morin was awarded second position after technical inspection dropped Lamothe from the position. Points leader Rachel Forte was third ahead of Dimatteo, who rebounded from his spin, and Martin.

In the 20-lapper for the Super X-Car division, the opening 11 laps were run uninterrupted before a yellow flag finally slowed the pace. During that span, Brouwer raced to the lead on lap-2 and sat ahead of a battle for second place between several drivers. Frank Alessio eventually took over the spot while Mark Boisvert and Robert Norman were locked in a duel for third.

Following the caution period, Brouwer got a good restart to resume his lead. Alessio took up his pursuit from second position while Peter Pollard joined the battle for third with Boisvert and Norman. That battle ended in a heap on the back chute when Alessio and Pollard made contact, spinning off turn two and collecting Mike Maskell on lap-18.

Brouwer looked like a veteran on the restart, the race’s final, to capture his second win on the season. Norman took second over Boisvert at the checkered flag. Bill Reiman and Ken Cassidy Sr. rounded out the top-five.

The special extra-distance X-Car feature got started with a bang in turns three and four on the opening lap when Jeremy Bourbeau got crossed up, collecting several competitors including points leaders Randy Johnston and Brad Voglesong. Todd Nadeau was the early leader once the field settled in for some racing. Nadeau gave way to Scott Limkemann on lap-5, who used an inside move down the back chute to take command.

Mike Trask and Voglesong both made their way by Nadeau as well, who slipped back to Pete Zaikarite who challenged Nadeau for fourth. Those two got together exiting turn four on lap-9 creating a wild moment as Nadeau’s car became airborne over Zaikarite, drawing the yellow flag and sending both to the pits for repair.

The middle of the race was exciting with Limkemann and Voglesong putting on an entertaining duel at the front. For several laps they ran in close quarters, with Voglesong holding the lead by a nose. He powered down the straightaways ahead of Limkemann who rallied back with the handles through the corner. Behind them Johnston was back on the attack, racing with Dan D’addario in a battle for third. Voglesong finally took sole possession of the lead on lap-25. A lap later chaos broke out behind the leader, as a three-wide battle behind Limkemann, Johnston and Patrick Williams ended with Limkemann spinning and collecting Williams, D’addario and Onie Pierce all making hard contact into the wall.

Following the cleanup from the wreck, Voglesong raced back into the lead. He raced the top groove of the track to his veteran ability, allowing Johnston room to look on the low side over the final five laps. Again, Voglesong had the power down the straightaways and Johnston challenged through the corners. Over the final lap Johnston made a valiant final effort, which came up a half-car short at the finish. Voglesong took his third win on the season ahead of Johnston, Trask, Zaikarite and Chris Garside.
