Preece Wins Baldwin Evans Jarzombek 77

Second Riverhead Modified Win Of The Year

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. – Ryan Preece turned in a dominating performance Saturday night in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series action at Riverhead Raceway to take the checkered flag in the Baldwin Evans Jarzombek Memorial 77.

Preece, from Berlin, Conn., piloted the No. 20 Modified to its second win of the season at the Long Island bullring. It was his eighth Whelen All-American Series win overall this year. He entered the weekend ranked seventh in the Whelen All-American Series national standings.

Shawn Solomito crossed the line second while Todd Szegedy joined him on the podium in third. Ted Christopher and Eric Goodale brought home the top five.

Ron Silk, John Beatty Jr., Kevin Goodale, David Sapienza and Howie Brode rounded out the top 10.

Timmy Solomito earned the 77 pole earlier in the evening and finished 19th after a mid-race accident.

With the runner-up effort, Shawn Solomito leapfrogged Howie Brode into the division’s season points lead, 346-334.

The annual memorial race honored late NASCAR Modified legends Tom Baldwin Sr., Charlie Jarzombek and NASCAR Hall of Famer Richie Evans – all who had strong ties to Riverhead.

There was a strong contingent of NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour drivers in the field Saturday night, including race winner Preece. Szegedy, Christopher, Silk, the Goodale brothers and Justin Bonsignore were also among that Tour contingent drivers who participated in the Baldwin Evans Jarzombek 77. Bonsignore, the reigning track champion, finished 21st after an early incident.

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will return to Riverhead next Saturday, July 28 for the Riverhead 200.

In Whelen All-American Series action earlier in the evening at the Long Island quarter mile, Roger Turbush won the Super Pro Trucks, Roger Maynor was victorious in the Figure 8s and Chris Turbush took checkers in the Charger feature.
