UNOH Modified Tour Showdown this Weekend at Thompson – YankeeRacer.com

UNOH Modified Tour Showdown this Weekend at Thompson

THOMPSON, CT — The much anticipated UNOH Showdown at the Thompson International Speedway is only days away and the anticipation is at an all-time high. The race event, which features the NASCAR Whelen southern and northern Modified Tours, proved to be the biggest hit of the season last year and, as a result, both race teams and fans are ready for a rematch.

The UNOH Showdown is a three-race combination that will spotlight the WSMT 75-lap Green Pointe Energy points race followed by the WMT the Town Fair Tire 75-lap points race. Upon completion of the two individual Tour’s races, the best of both Tours will be combined for the 50-lap UNOH Showdown race. The 50-lap event is not a NASCAR points race so all bets are off when each driver goes for the $15,000.00 top prize in this $50,000.00 go-for-broke, high stakes race.

Current WMT points leader, Doug Coby, will lead an amazing field of WMT competitors while George Brunnhoelzl, III, current points leader and defending division champion for the WSMT, will head up an equally impressive list of southern Tour regulars expected at Thompson. Both Coby and Brunnhoelzl will be looking to repeat their 2011 victories in the 75-lap races and Coby would like to run the table again with another Showdown win.

Competition is expected to be tough. Southern Tour drivers Danny Bohn, Jason and Burt Myers, Andy Seuss and others have proven to be tough customers at Thompson. Former WMT champ Donny Lia claimed the Bud 150 in August and defending WMT champion, Ron Silk opened the season at Thompson with a win at the Icebreaker. When you add drivers like Ted Christopher, Ryan Preece, Todd Szegedy, Rowan Pennink and Mike Stefanik, the competition is bound to be red hot all afternoon.

This two-day event will have Saturday devoted to practice and time trials for the Modified Tours. It will also include practice and qualifying for Thompson’s NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions. In addition, Saturday feature events will be held for the Thompson Modifieds and the LKQ/Keystone Lite Modifieds.

Sunday stars early with grandstands opening at 9:30 AM and a Fan Appreciation Party on the race track at 10:00 AM. This 90 minute gathering of race cars, drivers and crews offers fans an opportunity to meet and greet their favorite racers. Pictures and autographs will be the order of the day and a great way to kick off one of the biggest events in all NASCAR Whelen Modified racing. A brief opening ceremony will get underway shortly after 12 Noon and the first race of the day is scheduled to roll off at 12:30 PM.

As usual, the center of all social activities will be the Thompson Club House. The famous Thompson Speedway breakfast buffet will be served on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 7 AM- 11 AM. Dinner is always a highlight of a race weekend at Thompson and the Saturday night gathering at the Club House will feature a great race weekend menu and music for listening and dancing.
