2013 Whelen S. Mod Schedule Announced
Inaugural Visit To Southern National Highlights Full Slate
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – NASCAR announced today the 2013 schedule for the ninth season of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, which includes two new venues to the slate of events.
Next season’s schedule features 12 dates at seven tracks including two companion events with NASCAR’s national series.
New to the schedule in 2013 will be a special event as part of Speedweeks at Daytona (Fla.) International Speedway and two visits to Southern National Motorsports Park, the .4-mile track in Kenly, N.C., on March 23 and Sept. 21.
“Modified fans are as passionate as any in motorsports,” said George Silbermann, NASCAR vice president, regional and touring series. “The expanded 2013 calendar will give them new and traditional opportunities to enjoy the stars, cars, and unbridled excitement of the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour.”
The season will commence with the inaugural UNOH Battle at the Beach event on the .4-mile short track at Daytona on Feb. 19 in which the Whelen Southern Modified Tour and Whelen Modified Tour will compete in a combination non-points feature.
The regular season opener will be on March 16 at Caraway Speedway, the .455-mile oval near Asheboro, N.C. Including the season opener, Caraway will play host to five events with races slated in April, July and two in September.
Like Caraway, Bowman Gray Stadium is a staple on the Whelen Southern Modified Tour schedule. "The Stadium" in Winston-Salem, N.C., will welcome the tour back to its tight quarter-mile on Aug. 3.
Featured dates at Virginia short tracks South Boston Speedway and Langley Speedway in Hampton are slated for April 13 and Aug. 31, respectively.
The Whelen Southern Modified Tour will once again have a pair of companion events with NASCAR’s national series. The annual combination race with the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway will be part of a doubleheader with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series on Aug. 21 and Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, N.C., will welcome the tour to its quarter-mile track for the fourth consecutive season as part of the fall NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekend on Oct. 11 to close out the year.
