NEMA Midgets coming to Airborne

The Northeast Midget Association (NEMA) Midgets and their NEMA Lite support division will make their first appearance at Airborne Speedway in 41 years Saturday, August 3.

The last NEMA visit was July 7, 1971 when Jerry Wall drove the famed “Yellowjacket” No. 5 to victory. The first ever NEMA appearance at Airborne was on July 20. 1968 when Dave Humphrey bested George Monson and Ronnie Evans in a Pascale Offenhauser.

“NEMA is excited about the challenge that Airborne presents,” President Mike Scrivani said. “We are sure our drivers and equipment will be up to the test of another high speed facility. Judging from our performances at Thompson, Stafford and Oswego Speedways last year, Airborne can expect to see some impressive speeds.”

NEMA Midgets dyno 400 HP, weigh 1150 lbs. and run a 12″ right rear wheel. The NEMA Lites weigh the same and are powered by GM Ecotec 2.2-liter stock-block 4-cylinder engines or Ford Focus engines.

Airborne’s 60th anniversary season opens Saturday, May 4 with the Econo Lodge 50 for Ernie’s Discount Tols DIRTcar Modifieds. The entire 2013 schedule is nearing completion and will soon be available.
