Icebreaker to Feature “Best of the Rest” Race

THOMPSON, CT — Thompson’s Icebreaker weekend will offer two special race events on Saturday evening, April 13th. The events will be called “Best of the Rest” events and will be held for the Xtra Mart Limited Sportsman and the Monster Mini Stocks.

The fields in these races will be made up of drivers who raced at Thompson in 2012 but did not finish in the top ten in points at year’s end. Anyone in either division who did finish in the top ten in points will not be eligible to participate in these “Best of the Rest” races.

Fast track Concessions will provide the sponsorship for the Monster Mini Stock 15-lap race and New England Race Fuels will provide the sponsorship for the Xtra Mart Limited Sportsman 20-lap main. These two non-points events will be in addition to the regular Icebreaker races for these two divisions that will be run on Sunday, April 14th.

Thompson management feels that they wanted to add these events to the regular Icebreaker line up to show the track’s appreciation for the many years of support that these divisions have shown to Thompson. Commenting on the two special races, Management stated that every race team works very hard all year long but only about 25% of them make it to the top ten and the annual awards banquet. Races like the “Best of the Rest” will give these competitors a shot at a full purse and a chance to be in the spotlight on one of our biggest race weekends. The two “Best of the Rest” races will be run after all qualifying events have been held on Saturday.

The paddock area will open at 8 am on Saturday, April 13th with practice for all divisions getting underway two hours later. Practice will continue until qualifying begins at 3 pm. General admission grandstands will open at 11 am. Sunday’s schedule has the paddock opening at 9 am with pre race ceremonies slated for 11:45 am. The first race of the 7-race lineup will start shortly after 12 Noon.

In keeping with Icebreaker tradition, the Raceway Restaurant and Lounge will be open both Saturday and Sunday mornings for breakfast and will host the always popular dinner and dance on Saturday evening.

Tickets for the season-opening Icebreaker are available by calling the track office at 860-923-2280. The full schedule of events for Icebreaker weekend is available on the track’s web page www.thompsonspeedway.com.
