Bourgoine Adds to Impressive Resume at Speedway 95

Hermon, ME – The Amsoil Nelcar Legends Tour returned to northern Maine this past weekend to do battle at Speedway 95. The 3/8th mile is famous for its tough surface and its progressive banking that makes the long way around the fast way around. The start of a double header weekend for the Tour showed 14 of the tour’s best driver’s work to make their mark in the first of two trips to the track in the 2013 season.

For the first heat race it was the 81 of third year Legends driver Dan Winter on the pole with the 399 of four time tour champion Bob Weymouth on his outside. Weymouth would use the outside to his advantage as he drove off with the heat win ahead of Ryan Hammar in the 2 car and rookie John Peters in the 51 machine.

The front row of the second heat race consisted of Alan Smith from nearby Lincoln and the 84 of standout driver Matt Grant on the outside. The two fought hard for the lead while the 38 of defending tour champion Matt Bourgoine made his way to the front. A great race between Grant and Bourgoine saw the champ get the upper hand with Smith rounding out the top three.

The feature event rolled out onto the track with the 2 of Hammar on the pole with Grant on the outside of the front row. It wasn’t long before the action began as a series of yellows began the race with Alan Smith and Pete Cannell among drivers grading the dirt off the corners. The race started to get into a rhythm however and it was Matt Grant showing the way. Coming from the rear however was Matt Bourgoine, after finishing second two weeks ago at Wiscasset he had to make his charge from the rear of the field, and he did just that. He was able to get the lead of the race late and was cruising his way to the finish until Hammar went for a spin from the second spot to bring out the races final caution flag. This set out a shootout at the finish, as Bourgoine and Grant fought hard for the win, with Bourgoine getting another win at his home track! Matt Grant got his best career finish in second and Terry Kirk got his second consecutive top five with a third place run.

With the victory, Matt Bourgoine takes over the points lead by 16 points over Bob Weymouth. Racing at Speedway 95 was a great success and the Tour had plenty of supporters to thank. Fastco Corporation, Dysart’s, Airgas, FA Peabody Insurance, Machias Savings Bank, The Maine Land Company, Cross Insurance Agency and Maine Equipment Company. The Tour will be back at Speedway 95 on June 29th to put on another great show. The next Tour event will be May 4th at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway during the Pro All Stars Series weekend.
