Weymouth Breaks Winless Drought at Oxford Plains

OXFORD, ME — The Amsoil Nelcar Legends Tour made their return to Oxford Plains Speedway this past Saturday night for the fifth race of the season. The Tour was part of the popular “Motor Mayhem” series at the track, and as the only actual race of the evening, the 20 car Legends field lived up to the name. The day started with showers and delays, and ended in sparks flying and some tempers flaring, with a familiar face putting his name back into the winners circle.

The two heat races went caution free, with defending Tour champion Matt Bourgoine grabbing the win in the first heat and series veteran Ed Getty getting the win in the second heat race. The 20 car field was set, and they rolled off late in the night for the feature event.

On the front row was the 399 of four time Tour champion, Bob Weymouth. Getty lined up to his outside. The race went fairly smoothly, as Weymouth opened up a lead as he was looking to snap an almost two year winless drought, the longest of his long Legends career. On the 22nd circuit around the 3/8th mile track, the 77 of rookie Maggie Ferland went for a spin, bringing out the races first caution and bunching the field back up for an exciting finish. With Weymouth in front, Matt Grant in the 84 and John Peters in the 51 were right behind fighting for the lead. Going down the backstretch, Weymouth and Grant made contact for the race lead, resulting in Grant retiring early and bringing out another caution flag. On the next restart, Weymouth got out to the lead, and took the win, snapping that long winless drought. Ryan Hammar, Matt Bourgoine and TJ Laro fought from the rear of the field to grab second through fourth, with sophomore driver Wyatt Alexander fighting for his first career top five finish in the fifth.

After five races there have been four different winners, and defending champion Bourgoine leads the point’s standings over Ryan Hammar by just four points. Those two have been back and forth much of the first part of this season, and are setting up for a season long battle for the championship. The next race for the Amsoil Nelcar Legends Tour will be next Saturday, June 8th at Star Speedway in Epping, New Hampshire. The Tour was rained out of their last visit to the track.
