Hammar Takes Third Win of Season at Wiscasset

WISCASSET, ME — The Amsoil Nelcar Legends Tour went back to the high banks this past weekend with their second trip of the season to Wiscasset Speedway. One of the staples on the Tour since its inception in 1994, Wiscasset has always been a driver’s favorite and the fans enjoy it when the Legends Car come to race. This past weekend, it was a wild race, which is to be expected at Wiscasset each time.

The heat races were fast and furious with the two top point’s drivers, Matt Bourgoine and Ryan Hammar taking the wins. With the wins it gave them each equal points in their tight battle for the championship. Matt Grant and John Peters rounded out the top three in the first heat while Alan Smith and TJ Laro were the top three in the second heat race. Due to their top three in the tour’s last event at Star Speedway, Laro, Bourgoine and Peters would all have to start from the rear of the field for the feature event.

Under the lights, the 20 car feature event rolled out onto the Speedway with Ryan Hammar on the pole position with Alan Smith to his outside. The races first caution flag flew on lap four when Wyatt Alexander went for a spin after making good progress early from the rear of the field. On the races restart, Hammar was able to get away with the lead with the field in tow. A scary moment on lap nine saw Dan Winter in his 81 car have a parts failure going into turn one and slamming hard into the wall. Thankfully, Winter was able to walk away.

With a few more cautions to in the races closing stages, Hammar still held onto the lead. He had some competition behind him however, as Alan Smith, TJ Laro and John Peters were right behind. Laro was able to make his way by Smith, bringing Peters and Bourgoine with him. He couldn’t catch Hammar however; as he took his third win of the season! Laro finished in second with Peters in third. Bourgoine and Smith rounded out the top five.

After seven races, Bourgoine holds only a ten point lead over Hammar, while Bob Weymouth is just 67 points behind. It’s still a close battle for the championship, and it’s set to be tough for the duration of the season. The Tour’s next event will be next Saturday night for their final stop of 2013 at Hermon, Maine’s Speedway 95. Racing will kick off at 6:00PM.
