Dylan Estrella Picks Up Phil’s Propane Triple Crown/Mike Marfeo Jr. Memorial Race; Tom Scully Jr, John Hanafin & John Paiva Win SYSCO Boston Features
SEEKONK, MA — Tom Scully Jr picked up his first win of the season, holding off a hard charging Fred Astle and Dave Darling. Elmer Wing III took off at the start and set the pace for the first several laps. On the first restart of the main, Scully got the grip on the outside, and took over the lead. Wing hung onto second until Darling got by. Kevin Casper tried to follow, but was overtaken by Astle.
On a lap 21 restart, Darling held tough, and became the third leader of the event, but couldn’t close the deal, and Scully was able to maintain the inside lane, regaining the lead after three laps. With Darling on the outside, Astle slid under the defending champion, and the duo traded the second position back and forth over the final several laps, with Astle edging Darling for second. Kyle Casper finished fourth with Dick Houlihan fifth.

Dylan Estrella kept his Phil’s Propane Triple Crown record spotless, making it two for two on Saturday night. Mark Hudson took the lead on the opening lap, and led the first four laps before Ryan Lineham moved past and opened up some distance between himself and the rest of the field. Charlie Rose moved into second by the eights lap, and held there until Bill Bernard moved past and started to close on the leader. As they crossed for the halfway, Estrella was up to third.
As the second half rolled on, Bernard closed the gap on Lineham and started to put heavy pressure on the former Street Stock champion. Defending LM champion Gerry DeGasparre moved into third at the 37th marker, with Estrella still holding tight underneath. With just over five laps remaining, Lineham and Bernard locked together, with DeGasparre going around the pair while Estrella moved underneath the leaders. Lineham and Bernard would separate themselves down the back straight.
When Estrella and DeGasparre came out the other side, they were racing for the lead, as no caution was thrown. Gerry led lap 45, but the former SYRA champion kept him outside and took the lead on the following lap. With Estrella leading, Bobby Pelland III moved into the fight, and tried to wrestle second away, falling short by .009. Bernard and Lineham recovered for fourth and fifth.

John Hanafin of Quincy made his return to Victory Lane, picking up the 25 lap Street Stock feature. Chris DeMoura looked like he was going to be able to shake the bad luck that has been hounding him all season, as he took off from his pole position, and set the pace for the first half of the race. Hanafin moved into second, getting by Ray Negley, and put pressure on the N Dighton native right away. It wasn’t until the half-way point when he was finally able to get by for the lead.
Following Hanafin was defending Street Champion Paul Lallier, who glued himself to the back bumper of the new leader. Over the final ten laps, Lallier tried every trick in the book, but could not stop the celebration, as Hanafin broke a five year winless streak. Lallier was second, with DeMoura, Crystal Serydynski and Craig Pianka third through fifth.

John Paiva made it known that he is the man to beat in the Sport Trucks in 2013, as he picked up his fourth win in the 25 lap main event. Frank Duquette led the opening lap before Darryl Church took over on the second lap, just before Duquette and Rob Murphy got together. Fifteen year old Branden Dion took over on the restart, but not for long, as Paiva moved underneath and took over the lead. The pair raced wheel to wheel for the lead, swapping the top spot back and forth over the next dozen laps.
With less than ten laps remaining, Rick Martin moved into the chasers position, and started to put pressure on the Fall River racer, with Dion still making it a three truck battle. In the end, it was Paiva picking up another victory, with Martin, Dion, Murphy and Chase Belcher rounding out the top five.
