Wild N Wacky Wednesday 7/24 Results
Waterford, CT — Waterford Speedbowl returned to the race track with another round of its Wild ‘n Wacky Wednesday program with six drivers picking up victories. Dave Garbo Jr. of Stonington returned to the Speedbowl and picked up his second win of the season in INEX Legend Cars racing, while Ken Morin Jr. of Old Saybrook and Christian Eckes of Middletown, NY shared honors in twin INEX Bandolero features. John Yagmin of Tolland rallied late in the Super X-Car feature to score the win and Brad Voglesong of Middletown won the X-Car feature. The Wacky Race win went to Waterford’s Chris Thomas.
Garbo returned to the Speedbowl for just the second time of the Wild ‘n Wacky season and made his second trip to the winner’s circle. Garbo, the 2012 INEX National Champion as well as Speedbowl track champion, didn’t miss a beat as he powered his way to the front of the field in the 25-lap Legend Cars race on lap-11.
The race began with trouble breaking out at the front of the field before the field was able to complete lap-1. Joey Ferrigno and T.J. Thompson touched coming through turn four battling for the lead, sending both spinning in front of the field. Brendon Bock, Michael Blaskey, Dennis Pantani and Stephen Kopcik were all involved with everyone but Thompson continuing on after the caution flag.
Joey Ternullo moved to the front row and bolted into the early lead once racing began. He showed the way ahead of a battle for second that saw Angelo Belsito take the spot, holding it until Garbo moved to third. A caution flag on lap-7 enabled Garbo to get past Belsito for second on the restart and line up behind Ternullo. He shadowed Ternullo for three laps before he dove to the inside headed into turn one on lap-11. Garbo made the move stick and raced into the lead.
Once in front Garbo was hard to beat. Two additional caution flags slowed his march, the final coming in the final five laps. Garbo got away each time and went on to the win. A great battle for second position was taken by Nick Ladyga the finish, with Nick Sowa finishing third to round out the podium finishers.
Morin won the first of the two 20-lap INEX Bandolero features scheduled on the night. He powered into the lead on lap-7 after running the outside lane to perfection, getting past Anthony Marvin on lap-5 and leader David French on the seventh circuit. The race ran caution free with Morin holding his spot out front. A final hurdle for Morin was lapped traffic, with two cars side-by-side battling for position just ahead as he took the white flag. Morin cleared them going to the top of the track. Marvin made a late charge at French out of the final corner as they encountered the lapped cars, with French able to hold second position at the checkered flag. Marvin finished third.
The second Bandolero feature began with a scary incident on the opening lap. Three cars crashed hard into the turn two wall drawing the caution and red flags. Once racing started, Eckes led the field. He held off Corey Comeroski and Marvin the rest of the way as the race ran through the checkered flag without further delay.
Voglesong ran a smooth race to capture the 25-lap X-Car feature. He used the outside lane masterfully, riding it twice through the front runners on his way to the win. The first run saw him take the lead from Mike Trask off turn two on lap-14 following a restart. The final caution flag came on lap-18, with Voglesong choosing the outside lane for the restart attempt. Trask got the jump and led to turn one with Voglesong dropping back outside the top-three cars momentarily. Trask led lap-19 and once Voglesong regained his momentum, he charged back on the top of the track. He raced past all top-three cars back into the lead on lap-20. Once back out front, Voglesong pulled ahead to the win. Trask finished in second with John Bowes running a strong race to finish third.
Yagmin benefitted by a caution flag on the final lap preventing the 25-lap Super X-Car race from concluding. Yagmin was third much of the race behind an entertaining battle for the lead between R.J. Cunningham and Jon Porter. The pair traded the lead several times over the opening 22-laps which were run without the need for a yellow flag. Porter held the over Cunningham when the caution flag finally waved when Mike Maskell and Ed Ryan tangled battling just outside the top-five. Yagmin took second from Cunningham to lap-23 when another caution flag was needed. Yagmin restarted outside of Porter, then raced hard in the outside lane to lead the white flag lap and beat Porter to the checkered flag. Porter was second and Bill Reiman finished third.
